The worst nightclub you've ever been to?

Ziggys, York c.1999. An old Regency townhouse that you would swear was still lived in. Sofas, scatter cushions, and chintz wallpaper on the walls - chintz wallpaper that actually started sweating by 10pm. The main dance floor was down in the basement with only one narrow staircase for access and which must have breached every single health and safety law known to man.

We only kept going because it was two WKD's for £1.50 on student night.

Oh and Applejacks in Cannock. Later Ubar. There was a bed upstairs. A bed. You can imagine how that went.

Finally shut down last year.

Toomanycats99 · 03/11/2018 14:08

Another vote for cinatras in Croydon. I never really worked out why there was a 4 drink limit at the bar when it was free booze. The cheapest ham and coleslaw on the included buffet.

I remember a lady with her bottom hanging out her dress and also seen the mother daughter combos.

Glitteryfrog · 03/11/2018 14:11

Also a club in Northampton who used to hv be a student night on Wednesdays. It was £10 all you can drink but was just awful, so sticky and grimy.

That could be any of them... which era?

@catinboots9 @ClenchQueen Roadhouse and Gardening Club! I did some top quality pulling in them in the late 90s. The Wag on Wardour Street too, but that was actually good until they turned it into O’Neills.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 03/11/2018 14:15

@Goingalonenow I’m so happy someone mentioned Planet! We all used to get the train into wolves, do the free drink with entrance fee, stay til 4 then spend an hour in Chicken Cottage and get the first train home at 6am Blush. Loved that place.

Main Square in Newport (Shropshire) is the worst nightclub I’ve ever been to. It’s sticky and grim but the toilets oh god the horror! The clubs on the first floor but the bogs are in the basement and when you finally manage to descend down there you think you’ve stumbled on the set of a Saw film. Broken mirrors and blood, wee, chunk of hair, false nail, all just strewn around the floor.

exWifebeginsat40 · 03/11/2018 14:17

clearly no old Chelmsfordians here. Dukes was considered classy, compared to a club up the road called Peri’s that had cheap drinks, men in anoraks and a neon sign that looked like it said ‘Penis’. glorious.

also special mention for the Pink Toothbrush in Rayleigh high street which was ‘alternative’ and played a lot of Nine Inch Nails whilst goths got off with each other in the shadows. i had my hen night there, and it remains one of the best nights out i’ve ever had.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 03/11/2018 14:20

Cinatras in Croydon was minging, I think Watertown was similar and nearby? Watered down booze, rank buffet sweating away all night in the smoky fog. Always a punch up. Full of middle aged men, leering at the teenage girls.

Margate had some horrific pubs and clubs in the 80s - I remember being shocked to the core to be in a pub there one Saturday lunch time and noticed a woman giving a chap a blow job as he leant on the bar Shock

FrankensteinsKnuckleDuster · 03/11/2018 14:30

Ah the old sin bin (Cinatras)!

The balloons that came down at midnight, the 'buffet', the randomly placed sofas that people used to shag on, and the rather large lady that used to wear her personalised jacket every week - it said FAT SLAG on the back.

Croydon was so classy late 80s early 90s!

Still, better than being like a no mans land now.

GoofyIsACow · 03/11/2018 14:30

Oh god, i was thinking of the most grim one while reading this thread and i can’t narrow it down!
Carlton in Morecambe
Warton Grange
Brooks in Lancaster ( several times saw couples shagging mid dancefoor)
Crystal T’s Morecambe
Sugarhouse lancaster

None of these places (except sugarhouse which is full of the majority of Lancaster Uni every night!) are still there...!

Isit7yet · 03/11/2018 14:31

Pebbles in Troon! Currently a children's nursery. Anyone else remember Glen the bouncer? I swear I can still hear him shout get your £5 out ready folks

Snappedandfarted2018 · 03/11/2018 14:34

Omg I’m a York student in 2005 and ziggys doesn’t sound like it ever changed.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 03/11/2018 14:34

Can’t believe I clicked on this to post Ziggy’s and it was the first post!

It was earlier for me as I moved away from York in 1997. But ziggy’s was known as pull a granny night club amongst many local ‘lads’. Charming hey. (I was 21 when I left so don’t think I fell into the granny category)

There was a club in a casino in Reading that turned the music off and the lights went up at about 11pm and a full on Chinese buffet was served. They should never have turned the lights on as that revealed the rank carpets and walls.

catinboots9 · 03/11/2018 14:38

Is there anyone else who really wants to go to Ziggys now? It sounds lush

MistyReturns · 03/11/2018 14:38

@goingalonenow
Slapperjacks & The Dorch!!! Happy memories (almost memories). The Dorchester reeked of poppers.
How about Silks??? Grim.

Goingalonenow · 03/11/2018 14:41

@MistyReturns I was a little sad when Silks closed, it's been there forever. Snoopys originally!

I actual work in a pub in the town now and the kids all go to Fever (used to be Bank) because it's all that's left.

Silks was grim. So grim.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 03/11/2018 14:41

catinboots it was an institution!!
We used to go through to Leeds more often and had to avoid Toff’s as my now husband’s ex worked there so would spend the whole evening giving us daggers and refusing to serve us!

Partridgeamongstthepigeons · 03/11/2018 14:49

T's in Edith

Also the Venue in 1990... but then I went to Zens in Dartford most weeks so not fussy and stopped going completely at 19, didn't enjoy them

Partridgeamongstthepigeons · 03/11/2018 14:49

T's in Erith

wewillrememberthem · 03/11/2018 14:51

A place in Catterick in the 90's. Went just the once (can't remember the name of the place) and there were mini signs about 12 inches high all round the place saying "no spitting". I could not believe it! Grim.

OhmydearGod · 03/11/2018 14:52

Camden Pally 1996, kiss TV launch party or something. I was offered drugs so often it was ridiculous. Not that I was an angel always brought my own recreationals with me but it was almost like being in a nightclub full of chuggers. The dealers seemed to make up 50% of the club.

FrankensteinsKnuckleDuster · 03/11/2018 14:53

The venue at New Cross?
God I'd forgotten that, dingy as hell.

I also used to go to zens and got treated with a trip to Ts once, never been so scared in my life - my face clearly didn't fit!

ReverseTheFerret · 03/11/2018 14:57

Disappointingly low number of mentions for Klute in Durham on here considering how it was riding "high" on its reputation as being the worst club in Britain (it was 2nd worst but the winner closed) when I was at uni.

I went there sober once. That was a terrifying experience.

MissMarplesKnitting · 03/11/2018 14:57

Klute cannot go on the list because it was awesome. £1.50 for a triple meths and mixer, UV lights to amuse your drunken self with & pizza from the 'dirty shop ' in the same Riverside bit, or Bimbi's up the road if you were out before they shut. Had many a happy student night in Klute.

Preston....Tokyo Jo's was OK mid 90's but Squires was bloody awful. Though tbh my memories are hazy. No idea why... WineGin

Ooh yes, Linekers in Blackpool vwas rough as. Ditto Brannigans.

OhmydearGod · 03/11/2018 14:57

Manhattan heights in Muswell Hill, affectionately known as 'the shites'. Unfortunately the nickname was accurate. Cheesy, lots of leery older men, sticky floors. Occasionally frequented by young male Eastenders actors always the ugly, self important ones Grin

catinboots9 · 03/11/2018 15:00

The venue was amaaazing. Opposite the Amersham Arms.

I took DS1 to the venue last year when we were pissed at my parents house. I wasn't the oldest by a long stretch
