The worst nightclub you've ever been to?

Ziggys, York c.1999. An old Regency townhouse that you would swear was still lived in. Sofas, scatter cushions, and chintz wallpaper on the walls - chintz wallpaper that actually started sweating by 10pm. The main dance floor was down in the basement with only one narrow staircase for access and which must have breached every single health and safety law known to man.

We only kept going because it was two WKD's for £1.50 on student night.

Can't believe scaredofthecity is the only one to mention Southampton Jesters! With an utterly accurate description of what it was like. Fan heaters cable tied to the pipes as 'aircon' and a sticky floor so uneven you'd fall over like you were pissed even if you weren't. The quad vodka and coke in a pint glass and Juicy Lucy! They used to get shut down a lot for exceeding capacity under fire regulations.

The amount of people I knew who'd shagged in the toilets was terrible. I never did but I did get together with my ex there.

ENormaSnob · 03/11/2018 20:43

Begeracs in bolton circa 1998.

Followed by heros and liberties.

Then across to ritzy/ikon.

Good times Grin

CMOTDibbler · 03/11/2018 20:46

DMC, we must have been in the 'diff at the same sort of time. One of my (male) friends was a podium dancer in Cocos Grin
I never had a problem in the Philly, but we mostly went to Subways (grim, but OK) and Clwb Ifor Bach on a Tuesday later in my time there

Dh used to go the Stage Door sometimes - they had one of those late licenses where you got food with your entry

Oh dear god where do I start?!

Ok my hometown first- Liverpool.
The Grafton ( aka grab-a-granny ) say no more.

The Buzz, The Krazy House, Ferrari's, The Paradox! And further afield, Mr Smiths in Warrington.

My uni town- Hull, i remember Spiders and a place that was an old converted movie cinema where gin was 50p a double, that was 1996/7 and ive never touched it since.

Hull also had THE best club which was LA's.
Best club in Liverpool as a teenager was undoubtedly The Cavern.

Lovely thread to reminisce Smile

RubiksQueen I was sure I couldn't be they only one! I was trying to remember the loos but I seem to have completely blocked them from my memory.

I went out with one of the barmen for a bit and went to a staff party and that was even crazier. It was a completely free, help yourself bar. I somehow ended up drinking a pint of jagermister HmmShock. The blokes were just mixing beer with all the spirits. It was very very very messy.

I also remember touching mr motivator in there once Blush

Bowchicawowow · 03/11/2018 20:54

The Grafton was a one off!

NewYoiker · 03/11/2018 20:54

The Tivoli or The Tiv in Buckley 🤢 fucking vile sticky shoes and all! Under 18s night they used to serve alcohol 😂

Also see Rosie's in Chester- they sold hotdogs on the dance floor.. and they had he weirdest mix nights!

So Wednesday or Thursday was metal night( metal pig).. but it was also the gay night (gender blender) and the metal night finished earlier than the gay one so you'd get smelly moshers still damp from the mosh pit in with drag queens dancing to ymca. Honestly it was amazing and shit simultaneously

Zoflorabore · 03/11/2018 20:57

Ok just googled old clubs in Hull and the old movie theatre place with the lethal gin was called The Tower.

fiorentina · 03/11/2018 20:59

Spent way too much time in Ziggys, bad but so good! Sweat running down mirrors.. classy.

TarquinGyrfalcon · 03/11/2018 21:02

@CMOTDibbler - I used to go to The Stage Door in the eighties - they served a dreadful chilli that allowed them to then serve alcohol. There used to be plates of it abandoned everywhere.

Rebecca36 · 03/11/2018 21:05

The Alphabet, central London. I enjoyed it but it was just a bare room in which people danced.

Buster's in Brixton. That was fun.

Ska Ball in Woolwich.

The Blue Moon in Cardiff.

DMCWelshCakes · 03/11/2018 21:18

I'm now wondering if we know each other!

DH used to do gigs in Clwb.

Accountant222 · 03/11/2018 21:23

Top rank and Bierkeller Sheffield or if we were minted the Fiesta

CMOTDibbler · 03/11/2018 21:24

Dh was a DJ on rock/metal night at Clwb Smile so quite possibly!

78Indigo · 03/11/2018 21:28

Down Town in Rhyl and the Tivoli in Buckley, say no more!

Almondio · 03/11/2018 21:32

Zoflorabore I LOVED Spiders in the mid-90s, as an Indie child it was a safe haven with bonkers drinks (cider and pernod with jelly snakes??)

I only went to The Tower once, hideous experience, am sure there used to be a saying 'an hour in the tower' which I think related to pulling. I didn't go to LAs, but do recall one on De Gray Street which was literally someone's front room. Good times Grin

MorticiaAddamsIsMyStyleGuru · 03/11/2018 21:40

Cleopatra's, otherwise known as Clatty Pat's in Glasgow's West End. Girls being sick into pint glasses and people having sex against the bar. When challenged, he was an off duty policeman. You couldn't make this shit up!!!

Went once (or many times 😜) but had a pal who worked behind the bar. The stories were legendary. Or should that be infamous? 😉

Oh
And the Swavvy Sav. Or The Savoy in Sauchiehall Street. Stickiest carpet you ever experienced 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢 (not envy!)

Pericombobulations · 03/11/2018 21:44

Had to cheer when I saw the Leeds Phono and Bradfords Tumbler's both getting a mention.

My mate was manager of Tumblers in the early 90's and went on to run a smaller, grimer club that made the Phono seem large and posh! The Underworld in Bradford. It was in a small terrace basement, the loos had permanently broken locks, and loo roll was nicked by students as soon as they opened. The dance floor couldnt have been bigger than 2m x 2m. But you know what, I loved it!

My favourite night was watching a bloke who was so drunk he failed to get to the gents and just pee'd against the bar. Class.

But other honourable Bradford mentions must be Pickwicks and Rio's!

KevinTheCarrot · 03/11/2018 21:50

Jackies. Ross on Wye

Amazing! I still remember when someone did a shit on the floor.

Special place.....

LadyFlumpalot · 03/11/2018 21:51

@Dirtygirtyisthirty Legends! I loved Legends! It's closed now, like proper closed.

Nothing like trying to fight your way to the bottle bar or getting a chicken burger from the outdoors kitchen.

(I wonder if I know you?)

Bluelonerose · 03/11/2018 21:53

Snobs in Birmingham. Floor was sticky st the start of the night and I broke my foot trying to snog all the masks on the stairs Blush

Accountant222 · 03/11/2018 21:56

I forgot about Leadmill Sheffield, 70s night on Thursdays absolutely brilliant back in the day

YouBetterWORK · 03/11/2018 22:00

Haven't frequented a lot in my time, but the Crystal Rooms (aka Sticky Carpets) in Hereford. Once was enough.

BaileysOnToast · 03/11/2018 22:07

The razz! @TinselAngel I once went with white linen trousers on. When I went to the loo they were brown and soaking to my knees from all the slop from the dance floor!

IFeelAllFurry · 03/11/2018 22:11

The Irish in Nottingham.

Only it was actually brilliant. Like a village hall. Cheap beer, sticky floor. Someone always crying in the toilet. Thursday night was the hospital night out, everyone would be there. Complete meat market. Would see people there I’d only ever met in the Irish. Could predict the song order. Loved it.
