My dh died this afternoon. Please hold my hand through this.

We have four distraught dc. the police are still here. I don't know what to say to people. I don't know what to ask when they offer to help.

You don't have to know what to say or what to ask for right now. You just need to try and get through the minutes and the hours. It will be so so hard, but take it just one step at a time (even if each step is just 5 minutes) and you will all get through it.

Is there anyone who can come and be with you for a while? Your parents, or siblings possibly? It's good that you have a friend bringing you some food tomorrow.

People do want to be able to help, and food is a necessary right now, so even though it is difficult, perhaps just ask if they can prepare a meal for the children and you, or even make a cup of tea. Just having someone to sit with you may be good right now.

Just focus on the basic stuff at the moment, eating, drinking, getting some rest. It's good that you've got a friend bringing food over for you; just let people help with all the other big stuff for now. And you're stronger than you think you are, even if you don't believe it yet.

Dear OP, I am terribly sorry for your loss. There is nothing anyone here can say to change the way you feel but we can all jointly send you our endless love and support through this immensely difficult time.

As someone who lost her dad as a child, make sure your kids get all the support they can. When it happened to us 23 years ago (albeit in different circumstances) there were no charities or organisations to help bereaved children xx

I'm so, so sorry for your terrible loss OP, and for your DC. I hope your friends and family will be there for you. Perhaps ask a friend to look online at Cruse or Bereavement Advice Centre where they can find lots of information on how to take care of the immediate practicalities.
