Amazon have stolen my money...

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 29/09/2018 23:50

DH and I ordered a laptop for DD’s birthday. It was ‘Amazon’s choice’... we did research and it was about £10 cheaper from amazon plus we have prime so free delivery.

Today they delivered the ‘laptop’

It’s signed for, definitely in a laptop shaped box.. but includes a hell of a lot of packaging and a ‘box o baubles’ a very cheap strip of Christmas decorations. About the size of a pint glass. Very disguised in obvious laptop shaped box. We’ve never ordered this!

If you go on to amazon it says ‘this was handed to resident’ re the laptop.

So as long as they hand you a Box it doesn’t matter what’s in it???

Apparently there’s nothing I can do.

Wtf??

OP posts:

@Beesandfrogsandfleas

She's saying they've stolen her money. They havnt. They didn't decide to take her order, send her rubbish and refuse a refund. As far as 'the company' know, it has been delivered. But they also are aware that employees sometimes steal. They have agreed to investigate. That's the correct response. If they just refunded then everyone would lie and say this so they cannot just give the money back. But they havnt said no, they will look into it. The package would have been weighed at some point so if they get it back they can scan it and find out what it weighed or they can scan it And then check corresponding security footage etc. But OP is acting like they've stolen from her...

Duck90 · 30/09/2018 23:19

In my experience - as soon as I have returned something to amazon, via the post office, I receive a text within 5 mins to say money has been returned to my account. So once you have returned your item, they should action a new laptop being sent. But that would mean you would have 2 laptops in the end?

RowenaDedalus · 30/09/2018 23:19

But OP is acting like they've stolen from her...

Somebody HAS stolen from her though. I would feel like I’d had my money nicked too in her position.

Things like laptops come under items taken out of the home on your house insurance or gadget insurance, not holiday insurance.

hiplink · 30/09/2018 23:22

I was sent a phone case instead of something else I had ordered once. They sorted it out for me, I just had to return the phone case. I'm sure they'll sort it out for you too op

Fiffyshadesofgreymatter · 30/09/2018 23:23

@RowenaDedalus

To steal means you need to permanently deprive someone of something.

That is not the plan. A mix up of inventory number has occurred, or someone made an error, or an employee stole it. But Amazon are not refusing to refund. They just need to follow procedure.

How long would any business last if everyone knew they'd refund immediatly if you just phoned up and said "it's not in the box"?

No one has stolen her money. It just takes a couple days to sort out. It's a risk you take every time you order online.

PrimalLass · 30/09/2018 23:25

Travel insurance polices can include gadget cover

nocoolnamesleft · 30/09/2018 23:27

On a practical note, I presume you've realised it won't be a surprise: you'll have to take the laptop out your carry on, to go through security.

TomHardysNextWife · 30/09/2018 23:27

I ordered myself a pair of Ugg boots online from Simply Be.... they were £270 as they were knee high leather, and I ordered 2 pairs.... in a 7 and an 8 as I found they were on the narrow side with my others. Only one pair was in the box, not 2 and I had a hell of a game trying to get a refund for both pairs as the 7s didn't fit...... it was literally their word against mine, and very frustrating when you knew damn well that someone in the packaging warehouse had taken them instead.

If you don't get any joy OP can you try your household insurance? or contact your local trading standards?

cheesymashandbeans · 30/09/2018 23:27

If I were you OP I'd be bloody furious, especially as it was DDs birthday present. Ignore the posters saying you're being over dramatic, you are not at all.

As for people say "it wasn't Amazon it was an employee " you do realise that Amazon isn't an actual person right?! Every employee is a representative of Amazon, so yes , Amazon have fucked up.

I hope they sort it for you quickly OP x

Fiffyshadesofgreymatter · 30/09/2018 23:29

@LightastheBreeze

Your home policy would need to include personal possessions cover.

Gadgets are covered in a wide variety of travel policies. It's a pretty big market. And they often don't pay out for theft because they almost all say that violence must have been used or there must have been "forceful entry" if stolen from your room. And someone managing to override a lock to break in doesn't actually count as "forceful entry". You'd need to prove the used proper force to get your payout.

ManyCrisps · 30/09/2018 23:29

Also I don’t understand why you are paying that much money online without using a credit card it makes it much easier for you to get your money back in these types of situations and I also don’t understand why you have spent another £400 because you couldn’t possibly ever make your daughter learn how to be patient and to understand you don’t always get what you want. Also if you are able to spend £800 on two laptops why are you going on holiday during term time.

PrimalLass · 30/09/2018 23:30

Maybe she wants to?

m0therofdragons · 30/09/2018 23:31

I've dealt with amazon customer service before and it's probably one of the most stressful encounters I've ever had. I assume lots of people rip them off. Keep going op.

I'm baffled by the replies here. They've seriously let you down, you had it all sorted and they've messed up your plan so you won't see dd looking surprised on her birthday. I'm a planner and hate things going out from my control, especially when money is tight. Of course you want to give dd a gift on her actual birthday. Some posters don't see birthdays as important so just ignore them. Hope it's resolved quickly op.

CryingOverSpiltMilk · 30/09/2018 23:32

Its a horrible thing to happen and I'd be devastated but you need to deal with this in a level headed way, if they fob you off that's when you need to go mad.

Ontheboardwalk Because this smacks of someone who is completely impatient and unrealistic. There is a process in place which is to return the goods to Amazon to investigate, other posters have advised OP to photograph and document anything and everything.

Moaning only gets you so far (not very!) and demanding immediate replacement isn't going to work either. It took me 48 hours to get a pair of shoes sent out for replacement where the originals were 'lost in transit' and Amazon were aware that they had lost them too by the fact they could not account for where they went once they were in the delivery van but knew they hadn't got to me. Like any postal worker or courier unfortunately not everyone is trustworthy so they are most likely going to investigate their workers but they can't just have a customer say they haven't got something when they could be trying to pull a fast one.

Shit happens in life, whether OP's DD is 6 or 8, it's a good lesson to learn that things go wrong but they are fixable in time, a token present in the meantime should suffice and hopefully it is a good life lesson learned. Either that or just don't mention the laptop. Either way, OP's DD will be chuffed once her replacement laptop arrives.

April241 · 30/09/2018 23:33

I hope it’s sorted soon OP! I had two items stolen this year from Very, an Apple Watch and an iPhone, two separate orders a few weeks apart, both never arrived so different in that sense, I luckily had my money refunded. They never did arrive so someone somewhere is enjoying all my apple products for the grand sum of £0!

theworldistoosmall · 30/09/2018 23:33

Even if the item had been paid by CC, the company would contact Amazon and be told we told the person to send us back the item so we can investigate.
Until the investigation is complete by Amazon no bank or CC is going to automatically refund. Why? Because then op ends up with £800.

Not everyone has a CC. Some banks offer protection over £100 anyway.

Darkestnight · 30/09/2018 23:35

I detest Amazon. Hope you get something sorted op and keep on at them till they sort it out

RowenaDedalus · 30/09/2018 23:35

I’m fairly certain the OP understands that it can’t be sorted straightaway. However, at this stage she has no guarantees that it will be sorted at all. Therefore... she’s stressing about the £400 she spent!
I honestly cannot believe that most people would be entirely chilled about this scenario.

LightastheBreeze · 30/09/2018 23:36

Ours are an add on to our house insurance, our holiday insurance is provide by work and doesn't cover it. There are exclusions though as ever with insurance.

How did holiday insurance appear in this thread anyway...

I thought it was Amazon didn't deliver the correct goods, what has holiday insurance got to do with it.

McFugget · 30/09/2018 23:37

This happened to me this time last year. Supposed to be a hedge trimmer, instead some shit xmas decorations. I photographed everything and emailed them straight away. After a bit of huffing and puffing and making me return shit decorations and jumping through loads of hoops, the vendor eventually sent out the item I'd ordered. It was through Amazon marketplace though, not a "fulfulled by Amazon" order.

RollerJed · 30/09/2018 23:45

This thread 🙄

How does it smack of impatience because instead of getting what she ordered she got something else?

OP has phoned Amazon and isn't getting anywhere. And who thinks right, I'll order that thing and won't mind all the frigging around I will need to do if it doesn't come Hmm

You are getting a hard time here OP. I wonder if these same posters get all riled up about the tax thing probably, hypocrites. I hope you get it sorted soon.

Buggerbrexit · 30/09/2018 23:46

So do you think amazon should just refund £400 no questions asked? There was an issue with this last year or so where people were falsely claiming not to receive big items. Of course they need to follow a process.

theworldistoosmall · 30/09/2018 23:47

Rowena, I would be chilled and have been chilled in similar situations because I know that well, shit happens. If I wanted a guarantee of having the goods without hassle I would go to a store and buy like that. It's a risk because unfortunately there is some utter scum in the world who think they have a right to free things.

It will be resolved just not in the instant way the op wants. Clearly, she doesn't think it will be resolved based on the title and the fact that she has contacted them repeatedly.

RowenaDedalus · 30/09/2018 23:48

Maybe I’m just a worrier!
