Amazon have stolen my money...

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 29/09/2018 23:50

DH and I ordered a laptop for DD’s birthday. It was ‘Amazon’s choice’... we did research and it was about £10 cheaper from amazon plus we have prime so free delivery.

Today they delivered the ‘laptop’

It’s signed for, definitely in a laptop shaped box.. but includes a hell of a lot of packaging and a ‘box o baubles’ a very cheap strip of Christmas decorations. About the size of a pint glass. Very disguised in obvious laptop shaped box. We’ve never ordered this!

If you go on to amazon it says ‘this was handed to resident’ re the laptop.

So as long as they hand you a Box it doesn’t matter what’s in it???

Apparently there’s nothing I can do.

Wtf??

This sounds very bizarre. You ordered a laptop but received Xmas baubles in a laptop shaped box? Was the item sold by Amazon or by a third party?

I doubt you’ll be able to just return the box and get a refund, because they obviously think they’ve sent you a laptop. You’ll need to contact them and tell them what’s happened so they can investigate.

Request a chargeback from your bank with the reason 'Goods not as described'.

Sputnik.., I have obviously contacted them to go crazy!

Thanks screaming, that’s really useful

I think this is a very goady thread title. Amazon have not "stolen" your money. Some rogue somewhere has decided to do it.

I have never had a problem with Amazon refunding money for anything - even when things did not arrive but the tracking info said "handed to resident"

Actually, as I write this, I realise that one such item was a laptop. The tracking info said it was out for delivery, but at the very last leg of its journey it somehow evaporated.

Speak to them on the phone - you will find that they are as appalled as you are that someone has done this.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 30/09/2018 00:45

I’ve called them... twice. And I’m actually on hold right now. They’re not that appalled. I’m speaking to a call centre with scripted answers.

ScreamingValenta · 30/09/2018 00:45

That's a wee bit harsh, Potatoes. The OP has spoken to Amazon, and not found them very helpful. I'd be raging if my £400 purchase had gone AWOL.

rebelworld · 30/09/2018 00:47

Actually, someone in the warehouse has stolen your laptop. But you will get it eventually.

Graphista · 30/09/2018 00:48

If it's a visa debit card you may still have similar protection to if bought on credit card - see money saving expert site for details (in case I'm wrong and this is no longer true).

Also, surely this is fraud? You were deceived into paying for an item you didn't receive, also there's distance selling rules apply I believe?

What exactly have you said to Amazon and what have they said back? What was the exact description of the item?

Amazon have their faults but I've generally found the customer service ok.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 30/09/2018 00:49

Eventually doesn’t help me when it’s my daughters birthday present I need this week, I’m so upset. I appreciate no one can help me on here but I’m just so mad Sad

Raise a bank complaint. PSD2 complaints should receive a response within 15 days unless there are exceptional circumstances, in which case it's 35 days.

FrogFairy · 30/09/2018 01:04

You are not the first person this happened to. I remember some stories in the press a few months ago.

WatchThePotatoesBoil · 30/09/2018 01:06

I'd be raging if my £400 purchase had gone AWOL

But it's not the company is it? It's a rogue employee so there's no point being "raging" at Amazon - it's not like some loophole in their policy is being exploited to cheat someone out of cash.

My £490 laptop was for my daughters birthday too so I've been in exactly the same position. Amazon just re-submitted the order with a price tag of zero. Didn't arrive in time for my daughter's birthday either, but I'm not annoyed at Amazon. I'm annoyed at the delivery company employee who stole it.

ScreamingValenta · 30/09/2018 01:09

I see what you're saying, Potatoes but, as a company, Amazon have to take ownership of the actions of their employees and agents. If Amazon had agreed to re-order it with a £0 price when she phoned them, I doubt the OP would be annoyed.

Trishtashtosh · 30/09/2018 02:45

We had this about a year or so ago. Husband ordered something electronic (possibly a shaving thing - cant remember) but got a mini pair of very cheap (toy?) Ray ban style sunglasses. It was something totally different from what he had ordered and clearly cheap crap. Some sort of scam that he reported straight away and got his money back on. It boggled me a bit because the item he ordered was completely diferent to what he got - why do the scammers bother sending anything at all? Why cheap sunglasses? Why not simply a stone in a box? I don't get it!!!

Celeriacacaca · 30/09/2018 11:02

I had a similar experience this week - ordered a £8.99 candle for a gift and was delivered the equivalent of a tea light which didn't even look like the one I'd ordered. I emailed Amazon and it was sorted out within two hours and I received the replacement yesterday.

I get the impression, like your heading for this thread, that your approach may have been less than calm, which won't have helped them to help you. Gather all your evidence together, pictures etc and approach them again calmly.

Of course it's disappointing, annoying etc but, giving them time to sort it out is reasonable.

PartAnd · 30/09/2018 11:20

Amazon deliver zillions of items every day so it's hardly surprising that some things go wrong. It's impossible to eliminate every thief from the supply chain. It's shite but it will get sorted.

It's disappointing for your daughter but it's not the end of the world. She will get the laptop it will just be late.

I had the opposite happen when I ordered some pans and ended up with the latest limited edition PlayStation being sent 😂.... any yes I did send it back.

OP, collect your evidence carefully, photos, security camera etc and carry on talking to Amazon.

You can't blame them for wanting to be sure you aren't trying to scam them.

adaline · 30/09/2018 11:26

I find Amazon are very good for things like this. Over winter I ordered a few things that arrived late due to the weather. I raised a complaint and got full refunds on both (postage and the cost of the item), and got to keep the items when they arrived too.

waryandbored · 30/09/2018 11:30

Same thing happened to me, although with a cheaper product. Ordered a wooden ornament for a birthday present and received a bottle of vitamins! Took a while on live chat and then the phone but they did send the original item and told me to keep the vitamins... hope you get this rectified.

AllAtHome · 30/09/2018 11:32

Amazon have amazing customer services. I can’t see the problem being them, but something during transit. They normally fall over themselves to help.

Hanyu · 30/09/2018 11:38

I agree, you're being overly dramatic about this.

There's been a problem. Amazon have asked you to return the package so they can investigate. Why you can't just do this and get on with things is beyond me.

Sorry, I know it's a disappointment, but it's just one of those things. Your daughter will just have to understand.

Hoppinggreen · 30/09/2018 11:40

Something similar happened to us, Amazon were great and refunded very quickly

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 30/09/2018 14:46

Hanyu- being overly dramatic? You must be rich, I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t be upset by this.

OP posts:
MaryPoppinsPenguins · 30/09/2018 14:47

And also, why should my daughter have to understand? It’s going to be her birthday. Obviously I’m going to have to get her another one regardless... perhaps we don’t feel the same way about our children but I don’t want mine to be disappointed on her birthday.
