HelloPeopl3 · 25/09/2018 15:58

Im currently pregnant with our first baby.

My partner and I have only 1 name we both love and that is Isla, however he's not keen on the spelling..

And also a name to go with Isla as we may double barrel first name
Any suggestions?
Thank you x

I met an Aiylah pronounced as Isla a few weeks ago.

Wolfiefan · 25/09/2018 16:50

It’s spelt Isla so if you don’t like the spelling maybe a different name?

How can you love a name but not like how it’s spelt? Isla is spelt Isla. You could cobble together some letters that could be pronounced the same if that’s what you’re after - Aisle-arr, Eyelah, I’ll-Ah. Done.

Jokat · 25/09/2018 16:50

I suppose you could spell it Eila...? But then she'd have to spell it out for others for the rest of her life.

Catfacecats · 25/09/2018 16:51

It’s Isla. Please don’t go down the unique spelling route. It’s a lifetime of corrections and mispronunciations for your child!

Watto1 · 25/09/2018 16:51

Not quite Isla ( Can't think of another way to spell Isla without it looking totally made up) but I know an Ayla. Ay pronounced to rhyme with Hay. Any good?

musmusculus · 25/09/2018 16:52

Islay is the traditional spelling. Like the Scottish island.

MrsTeacake · 25/09/2018 16:52

The original spelling of Isla was Yla.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 25/09/2018 16:53

I know of an Iyla

kitbabingley · 25/09/2018 16:54

I've seen it spelled Islay, as in the island. But it took me ages to realise it was pronounced eye-la rather than eye-lay!

musmusculus · 25/09/2018 16:55

I can say with 100% certainty it was never yla 🤦🏼‍♀️

Islay is the correct answer you are looking for. Takes one to know one 😉

potters off and changes username

MrsGollach · 25/09/2018 16:56

Don't ruin the name by spelling it anything other than Isla. What is wrong with your partner FGS?

MrsTeacake · 25/09/2018 16:58

If you look at old maps of Scotland it was spelt 'Yla'.

kezzy13 · 25/09/2018 16:59

Aisla possibly?

Vanillaradio · 25/09/2018 17:00

Ds had a friend at nursery called Iyla....

YerAuntFanny · 25/09/2018 17:02

There's an Aiyla in my daughter's class.

I thought her name was pronounced Ay-la until her Mum was correcting people in the playground.

BitchQueen90 · 25/09/2018 17:04

I know someone with an Eila.

QueenofallIsee · 25/09/2018 17:05

I think you could go with Islay and not be a walking Kath and Kim parody - I find it weird to not like the spelling of something though, it’s letters to make a sound, what’s not to like Confused

BifsWif · 25/09/2018 17:06

Honestly, it’s Isla.

Don’t spell it differently, it’s just weird and your child will be correcting people forever. The spelling of the name Isla is I-s-l-a. Sorry.

Musseswoofles · 25/09/2018 17:07

Yla was a Gaelic version until around 1800 along with ili.

The modern gaelic is Ile. Anglicised is it Islay.

jjemimapuddleduck · 25/09/2018 17:08

I'm in Scotland and know Islas (lots!), an Islay and an Aisla - all pronounced the same way!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 25/09/2018 17:09

I never knew that Islay was pronounced the same as Isla Blush
I'm not sure I've ever said it out loud but it's always been Is-lay in my head

Overgrownyard · 25/09/2018 17:12

Eyelarrrr

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 25/09/2018 17:12

What about Ayla ??
