HelloPeopl3 · 25/09/2018 15:58

Im currently pregnant with our first baby.

My partner and I have only 1 name we both love and that is Isla, however he's not keen on the spelling..

And also a name to go with Isla as we may double barrel first name
Any suggestions?
Thank you x

I know a little girl called Eira pronounced Eye-rah. It is the Welsh word for snow.

ElfrideSwancourt · 25/09/2018 19:27

I know an Aila pronounced the same as Isla.

LuckyAmy1986 · 25/09/2018 20:06

i know you weren’t asking for name recommendations lol but another really lovely Turkish name that works in English is Alara. And it’s not common like Isla/Ayla. Common as in used a lot not trash FYI haha!

The island Islay is pronounced Isla.

NerdyBird · 25/09/2018 20:15

A distant-ish cousin of mine is Aila so I was more familiar with that spelling. If you are going to use a different spelling try to use one that will end up with the pronunciation you'd like.

AamdC are you sure that wasn't the Polish name Maksymilian?

Ca55andraMortmain · 25/09/2018 20:24

I've taught an Iylah but as others have said, just call her Isla. That is how the name is spelled. I've also taught kids called Emma-Leigh, Luciye, Mykal, Jaymes etc and all it does is confuse everyone. The majority of people she meets will never know she's called Iylah and not Isla - they sound the same. So why complicate it? If you want an unusual name then by all means choose an unusual name. Don't choose one of the most popular names around but spell it differently. Your daughter won't thank you.

I have an Isla and we spell it Iyla... her middle name is Jess. We were going to double barrel it... Iyla-Jess but we have a double barrelled surname so thought it would be too much!! I still call her Iyla-Jess though!

Fluffyears · 25/09/2018 20:37

I’d use the correct spelling of Islay after the island.

Pieceofpurplesky · 25/09/2018 20:38

I'll-A Wink

BonnieF · 25/09/2018 20:42

Isla is the correct spelling.

Mis-spelled Celtic names are chavvy.

SilverbytheSea · 25/09/2018 20:47

Ailsa is a completely different name and pronounced different to Isla. Like the island just if the coast of south Ayrshire, Ailsa Craig.

Musseswoofles · 25/09/2018 20:51

Except the Celtic name is ISLAY.

🙄

Musseswoofles · 25/09/2018 20:53

Bloody hell.

Islay is beautiful, traditional correct and absolutely acceptable op.

forevernotyoung · 25/09/2018 20:55

Ayla

One of my favourite names ever

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 25/09/2018 20:58

I was born on Islay and had always like it as a girls name but I’d have spelt it like the island not Isla.

Tisfortired · 25/09/2018 21:00

I know of an Ilah...

Eeyoreismyspiritanimal · 25/09/2018 21:09

@Dontbestupidagain I know of a little girl called Eira (eye-rah) too. Wonder if it's the same one? Does she have an older sister with a name that is Welsh for Star? Smile

If not Isla, Islay or Iyla, how aboutLila (lie-la) or Eliza? (E-lie-zah).

Kezzie200 · 25/09/2018 21:09

Chose whatever spelling you want but dont spend 18 years banging on about how everyone spells it wrong, when they write Isla.

Also, it can look like you made a spelling mistake on registration, so be careful what you choose.

candlefloozy · 25/09/2018 21:35

I know an iyla. I wanted that name but husband said he didn't like how it was spelt?! So we chose another name

altiara · 25/09/2018 22:31

What about Ella instead?
Bonus - straightforward spelling, good for Ella to show off at pre-School at how good she is at writing and spelling her name!!

cheesemongery · 25/09/2018 22:35

Bob.

Pronounced Eyela.

HelloPeopl3 · 26/09/2018 01:28

I think Roger pronounce eye-la

Grin

Seriously After much consideration it may be best to stick with Isla spelt as is. Although I'm still a little stuck on a name to go with it.. Isla-mae ? Opinions please x

No not Mae! Sorry but that's awful and done to death. Why not May? Why the stupid spelling of it? I know so many girls who have -Mae (or Mai) and I cringe so much for them.

Heatherbaby · 26/09/2018 01:38

A recently named Isla in my family has on 2 occasions (when addressed by professional people I.e. doctors /nurses calling in waiting rooms) been called Iz-la! I despair! You can never avoid idiots regardless of how easy or well known you try to make the spelling!
