Im currently pregnant with our first baby.

My partner and I have only 1 name we both love and that is Isla, however he's not keen on the spelling..

And also a name to go with Isla as we may double barrel first name
Any suggestions?
Thank you x

I saw it spelled Eilah recently. I quite like it.

Sorry didn't mean to post that on here!!

Eeyoreismyspiritanimal · 26/09/2018 21:24

@candlefloozy I'm kinda glad you did! Validates my decision to have pulled ds2 out of his preschool a while back as they failed on a couple of those points !

blueberryporridge · 27/09/2018 00:31

Re Isla-Mae - there is an Isle of May on the east coast of Scotland and if your DD heads north of the border, I am pretty sure that a proportion of folk would think you had named her after it! (See also Isla-Skye, Isla-Wight etc as noted by PP...)

user1493423934 · 27/09/2018 06:30

DS had a friend Isla spelled 'Eilah'

user1493423934 · 27/09/2018 06:41

And yes please don't double barrel - what is it with bloody Mae/Rose etc being shoved on the end of names? so tacky. I know an Isla-Jean and Freya-Rose. Nice enough names without having another name tacked on.
*Sorry if I've offended anyone who has similar double-barreled names for their kids.

SD1978 · 27/09/2018 06:48

It's going to sound the same regardless of whether you choose a 'yoonique' and different spelling. One would assume you will be talking to your child more than writing to them, so spell it the right way and make life simple for them. Or choose another name.

Groovee · 27/09/2018 07:02

I've seen Ayla pronounced Isla.

candlefloozy · 27/09/2018 07:16

I have s double barrelled name but am in my thirties!! It has gone a bit crazy all these hyphened names.

ivyhope92 · 28/05/2019 21:11

My bestfriend's little girl is called Isla but her way is spelt Iylah and it's still pronounced the same! I know you have obvs had your baby now, curious how you spelt it now?

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 28/05/2019 21:17

Don't saddle your child with a lifetime of correcting other people's pronunciations and/or spelling.

From experience, it's awkward and irritating, and completely unnecessary.

Howtotrainyourhamster · 28/05/2019 21:21

Islay is the correct spelling for naming after the island.
Ila/ Ile are the Gaelic spellings and I have also seen Yla on old maps.
Isla, I believe, is a river in Scotland and is not an actual spelling of the island.

All these I would see as acceptable spellings, also Ayla which is pronounced the same in some languages.

Double barrelling with something like Mae totally ruins it though.

wigglybeezer · 28/05/2019 21:21

There is an Isle of May, it's a bird sanctuary in the Firth of Forth, so that would rule Isla-Mae out ( unless you're a big fan of puffins).

LookImAHooman · 28/05/2019 21:36

I feel like OP has had the baby by now...

Whhwjsjssjjsjww123 · 24/11/2019 23:04

I know a clown who spells Isla with a y

seaniaregan · 29/06/2020 00:12

I think that’s quite rude my name is spelt seania but pronounced shauna and I’m so grateful my mum gave me a unique spelling

Blackbear19 · 29/06/2020 07:13

@jjemimapuddleduck

I'm in Scotland and know Islas (lots!), an Islay and an Aisla - all pronounced the same way!
Are you being serious Isla and Islay are pronounced the same? I always thought they were Isl-ah and Isl-ay.

Aisla is definitely not the same it starts with an A - as in Aisla Craig.

Blackbear19 · 29/06/2020 07:16

I've just realised the age of this thread Confused

LuckyAmy1986 · 29/06/2020 07:27

Ayla is actually a name in its own right, it’s a Turkish name. Not just a variation for if you don’t like the spelling Isla!!!

LuckyAmy1986 · 29/06/2020 07:28

@Blackbear19 oh man Blush

Littlebyerockerboo · 29/06/2020 07:58

Where is op?! Come back op! What was baby's name?!

sarah555777 · 13/04/2021 09:18

It’s spelt a lot of ways, iyla is another way

sarah555777 · 13/04/2021 09:22

It’s funny how judgmental people are with spelling this name, spell it how ever you like, people who are saying it can only be spelt Isla and no other way don’t have a very open mind
