How much was your engagement ring?

Feeling nosey! I was on another thread where the OP had £600 to spend on an engagement ring and the first comment was how it was a lot of money and was she sure she wanted to spend that much.

£325. DH was unemployed when he bought it. I'd love a big sparkly ring but I don't think we'll ever be able to afford it.

OhTheRoses · 24/09/2018 23:13

£2,200 with hard negotiation. 28 years ago .Had it valued 10 years ago and nearly fell off the chair. I had thought they didn't hold their value. It seemed modest at the time. Good sapphire flanked by two diamonds. Dated now but I still love it. It has endured with US.

Catfacecats · 24/09/2018 23:14

£12k - pre kids and we had way more money then! I didn’t ask for one that expensive - that’s just what my partner chose!

Mine was free, it was my DH’s grandmothers. My wedding ring is my grandmas.

iLoveSpaDays · 24/09/2018 23:15

£2500 I love it

IAmNotAWitch · 24/09/2018 23:16

I can't remember, it was too long ago. Had to have been cheap though, we didn't have any money.

OhTheRoses · 24/09/2018 23:17

I love the fact that DH spent as much as he could afford at the time. He has suggested replacing for something bigger but it is irreplaceable.

anappleadaykeeps · 24/09/2018 23:18

Mine was about £4,000. Crazy money, but DH was determined it needed to be expensive.

We are now divorced, and I miss wearing it. I did really love it.

DH turned out to be very strange and abusive though.

batshitebather · 24/09/2018 23:19

Not exactly sure but it has its own insurance & is insured for 8k. Not particularly big (main stone 1 carat) but it’s a emerald cut & I still wanted sparkle so it’s a very good quality stone.

LemonysSnicket · 24/09/2018 23:20

How do people feel about second hand rings? DP thinks we'll spend around £4K but I'm happy to get one worth £6k but costing much less of second hand. DP thinks it would be sad...

MewithaC · 24/09/2018 23:21

About £300. Vintage diamonds. My eternity ring 15 years later cost a bloody fortune and I found out 3 months later he was shagging his PA...

ColinsVeryJolly · 24/09/2018 23:22

£50. We were very young and very skint. It’s an amethyst in an unusual setting. I love it but unfortunately the stone has fallen out after knocking it at work and we’re skint again so can’t afford to get it fixed. I’m just wearing my £30 from Index wedding ring now 😄

SarfE4sticated · 24/09/2018 23:22

Mine was remodelled from my grandmother's diamond engagement ring, no idea of the value actually. It's probably not valuable per se, but knowing the diamonds belonged to her makes me feel she is always with me.

Alaaya · 24/09/2018 23:24

£1k ish I think. Not sure. DH picked it and surprised me with it, so I've never known, but it is perfect. I wear it every day and it constantly makes me happy that it's there.

NonaGrey · 24/09/2018 23:25

Mine was a month’s salary 20 years ago. I do know someone whose ring is worth 6 figures. It’s not really my taste but she loves it.

OhTheRoses · 24/09/2018 23:27

Hmm. The thing with bought second hand is you don't know how the engagement or marriage ended.

Wifelife · 24/09/2018 23:30

@LemonysSnicket - I think the opposite to your DH, I like the idea of an second hand ring, I’d like to think it belonged to someone who had had a very long and happy marriage and would be good luck (you’ll never know if that’s the case of course but a nice thought)

nipersvest · 24/09/2018 23:30

£220, came from a vintage market stall, 20 years ago, don't know much about it other than when I had it sized down the jeweller said it was very old, almost 200 years old. Would love to know more about its history.

batshitebather · 24/09/2018 23:31

LemonysSnicket I wouldn’t have an issue with 2nd hand, my mums one is & it’s beautiful, the diamonds are so sparkly & it’s worth loads. l did look in antique shops for mine but I had a very specific idea in my head that I knew I wanted. Im desperate for an actual emerald stone ring & if I get one that will be second hand. Something like this would do me!! www.antiquejewelleryonline.com/collections/antique-rings/products/antique-edwardian-emerald-diamond-ring-platinum-circa-1910

StatisticallyChallenged · 24/09/2018 23:48

I've bought a few nice bits of used jewellery recently and I would have no qualms about it for an engagement ring; I wish I'd known more before tbh! If you want new I'd look at places like BlueNile, the prices compared to high street are dramatically lower and the quality better. Might be a half way house for your DH.

FoodGloriousFud · 24/09/2018 23:50

@Tomboytown That's so sad, I'm sorry for your loss. I really hope your ring turns up x

SkippedALightFandango · 24/09/2018 23:52

I don’t know. My fiancé chose it before he proposed. It’s a 1ct diamond with 18ct gold band. I love it 😊

LardLizard · 24/09/2018 23:56

Ridiculous amount, do love it though but seriously it’s crazy really when you think about it also I don’t know how Jewellers can justify 1000’s on a wedding band n no diamonds

Pepper123123 · 24/09/2018 23:57

Under £50 because I refuse to buy a diamond or have one bought for me with my knowledge.

laceygo · 24/09/2018 23:58

Who gives a shit ... £2000 or £20 , either could be a shit bloke Wink
Mine was £150, he has his shitty times but I've had him for 18 years and can't be bothered giving him back
