How much was your engagement ring?

Feeling nosey! I was on another thread where the OP had £600 to spend on an engagement ring and the first comment was how it was a lot of money and was she sure she wanted to spend that much.

OP posts:

€140 and the matching wedding band was €45. Both silver, the engagement ring has a raw diamond set in it. I don't do bling, and personally don't think jewellery is worth spunking a ton of money on. Bloody love my rings!

nahthenmardybum · 25/09/2018 18:22

@nightjane297 i didn’t want to know the cost of mine but when you’re shopping for a ring together it’s not very easy to look at the rings but ignore the price tag Grin

Holymolymackerel · 25/09/2018 18:27

£250 from a second hand shop.

It was the only one in the shop which fit dh's budget.

I don't like it but love what it represents.

We went looking at rings together a few times before he proposed, so he knew what I wanted. The one I ended up getting was the one I liked the most but had no idea how much it cost as they don't put the price on them if they're over a certain amount.

AWholeLottaRosie · 25/09/2018 19:34

There was a similar thread a year or so ago, one MNetter's ring was over £200k.

laraloo92 · 25/09/2018 19:40

@NewLevelsOfTiredness I honestly wouldn't of cared if mine cost £5 ! You seem to pay and help her out so much I'm sure any ring would make her happy x

DieAntword · 25/09/2018 19:45

£40. The wedding rings were about 60 each.

laraloo92 · 25/09/2018 19:45

Just remember some people have £10,000 and spend £1,000 on a ring or there's people who have £20 and spend £20 on a ring ! I know what I would rather x

mangowango · 25/09/2018 19:49

Don't know. Don't want to know. It doesn't matter

magichippo · 25/09/2018 19:58

Mine was £1000 20 years ago. It’s an emerald cut solitaire diamond and I still love it and wear it every single day.
I know exactly how much much it was because we went shopping together for it and I paid half 😀

tillytoodles1 · 25/09/2018 20:02

Mine was £1500 twenty five years ago.

FrangipaniBlue · 25/09/2018 20:09

£600 20 years ago

Its insured for £5,000 though as that's what an appraiser told us it would cost to replace like for like today Confused

beanaseireann · 25/09/2018 20:09

Some posters have said their ring was £20000- Shock
I'd live to see what a £20000 ring looks like !

Notsohorriblehistory · 25/09/2018 20:13

Just remember some people have £10,000 and spend £1,000 on a ring or there's people who have £20 and spend £20 on a ring ! I know what I would rather

I’d go for the former. The latter sounds utterly stupid when it comes to money - not a good sign for the future!

cluecu · 25/09/2018 20:26

Mine was £425.00. I'm not into jewellery really but wanted to choose my own as I knew I'd wear it every day. DH said no budget but realistically it made no sense to spend more than I needed as it was still 'our money'. So I picked one I loved and was happy with the price when i then was told it. However there's a limit I'd have gone to.

Still have the ring but lost the original wedding ring so glad I didn't go dear Smile

Wallywobbles · 25/09/2018 20:34

Mine belonged to my great grandmother. So technically free but we'd never have bought something as amazing.

CormoranStrike · 25/09/2018 20:36

£160 - which at the time was either a week or a month’s wages, can’t remember which.

Don’t know the actual cost but they have their own insurance policy so know that value.

jusdepamplemousse · 25/09/2018 20:47

Just shy of £5k. About 5 yrs ago. It’s beautiful - ruby and diamonds - but now we have 2 DCs I have no idea what we were thinking spending all that cash on a ring Confused. Wouldn’t sell it though Grin.

happysunr1se · 25/09/2018 20:50

Mine cost around £400.
I hardly ever wear it because the main stone will scratch easily as it’s sphene/titanite and I have a manual job. It’s very sparkly with loads of fire and is a bright sunny yellow colour with diamonds on the shoulders (which are stepped like staircases) and heart shaped cut outs inside the shoulders.

I also received a lot of .9999 gold jewellery when I got married and I wear a necklace from that dowry 24/7 which holds the same sentiment for me as an engagement ring.

NorthernSpirit · 25/09/2018 20:51

I am a v lucky lady. My OH chose a diamond from a diamond merchant in London had it set in a Tiffany Settting. It’s a 2 carat brilliant cut. Insured for 5 figures.

MrsElijahMikaelson · 25/09/2018 20:55

£89.

My fiance got me one for £300 but I took it back and got a better one for cheaper.

I don't look after my things well so I only wanted a cheap one.

POLYNESIA12 · 25/09/2018 21:08

5/6k can't remember exactly.

Yourcupwillneverempty · 25/09/2018 21:35

Mine was £4,000. To some that would be peanuts but it was literally 3mths wages for my now DH and he paid for it upfront. He has never, ever paid for anything expensive upfront. It is the most expensive thing I've ever owned and it's only a grand off the most expensive thing (car) he's ever owned. He went and got it himself, I'd sent him a few links to ones I liked (there was nothing traditional about our engagement/ wedding at all!) in the 800 to 1k range never expecting him to spend even that much. The fact he did was far more valuable than the ring itself to me, although I LOVE it. He's spent the last 11 years under the impression that when we divorce he'll get it back and buy himself a nice motor with the funds but I quote Judge Judy at him so he's got no chance 😂 it's probably the only reason we're still hanging on!
