Just ... hello really.

I consider myself a bit of an oldie but there might be people still here who were posting from the very start (circa 2000/01 ish?).

I sometimes wonder what it would be like to go back 10-12 years on Mumsnet. Would it look significantly different? I remember lots of scandals about the changing of the appearance of the site. I guess there would be fewer adverts, sliders and pop-ups?

Woud we still have lots of threads headed like this
MamaGwhereareyou**

Hot topics of conversation might be baby modelling and the MMR. I can't honestly remember.

What do you recall about the early days of MN if you were here then?

OP posts:
Littlechocola · 19/09/2018 22:30

I was around 2005. I was various names including Moljames, cheesarnie, kittypants

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 19/09/2018 22:30

Ooohhh. Did Mile for Maude and managed to lose DD in the process. She wandered off and we had to interrupt the walk for a quick search party Blush

Oakmaiden · 19/09/2018 22:30

Think I joined in 2002, and still have the same username...

holiday if I recall correctly she was getting hassle IRL connected with her MN posts. She was identifiable and it was causing problems. I think she came back for a while under a different username, maybe she is still here. Not sure and wouldn’t want to out her by asking.

Littlechocola · 19/09/2018 22:31

@NewToCats mile for Maude Sad

catherinedevalois · 19/09/2018 22:31

I think it shifted after Moldiegate and the introduction of AIBU. Not necessarily better or worse but It took a while for me to find humorous threads again after a lot of well-known posters left. I don't tend to notice posters' names any more apart from a few on the education boards. The climate of the lazy journalists scrolling through MN looking for copy has definitely changed the vibe and there is a large amount of posts/threads that get taken down. Favourite things I remember are horses at the Olympics, MN bat, Mile for Maude and Peter's heart transplant story.

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 19/09/2018 22:32

“Day orphanages” sticks in my mind a small one of the first few threads I saw too.

JeezYouLoon · 19/09/2018 22:32

I've been around in various guides and accounts since 2007 ish.

MN has made me much more empathetic to anyone and everyone. I'm much more liberal in my view of the world.

It got me through the toddler years and I hoping it will also help with the teenage ones WineWine

megletthesecond · 19/09/2018 22:34

Spring 2007 here. Post bat but pre moldies.
Never bothered to completely name change.
A lot of posters seem to have left or name changed after the hacking incident.

catherinedevalois · 19/09/2018 22:35

Also without MN I would never had had even a glimpse into the struggle that families have to get the appropriate support in schools for their children with SEN.

sweetkitty · 19/09/2018 22:36

2003 here same name all aling

Oxfordblue · 19/09/2018 22:38

I joined in 2004 I think, name changed a couple of times. It's definitely different now, posters are a lot ruder & I hate all this "ooh drip feed" nonsense.

Chesntoots · 19/09/2018 22:39

I can't remember exactly when I joined. I was a bit of a lurker for a very long time.

I do remember most of those names though.

PrincessMargaret · 19/09/2018 22:39

I don't remember exactly but it was pre-moldies. My dd is 14 now so a long, long time 😱

LapdanceShoeshine · 19/09/2018 22:40

Haitch didn’t have an H
She was Aitch Grin

Giraffeski · 19/09/2018 22:41

Meee!
I joined some time around 2004 ish I think as DD1 is 16 in March. It's a totally different place but as my youngest dc is still only three I still find it useful. And I normally search for recommendations for things here before I trust anyone else. DH asks 'what does Mumsnet think?'

Growingboys · 19/09/2018 22:42

I joined in c2005. Came from a website called ivillage - anyone remember that? Was all the rage, back in the day.

No idea what my first MN user name was. Might have to stalk myself tomorrow at work to work it out!

LapdanceShoeshine · 19/09/2018 22:45

I joined in 2000/2001. Very early days. You could read all of last 24 hours posts in a very short time.

So we did get to “know” each other, but still the idea of meeting people in RL was very nervewracking. I think a big meeting in London (vinopolis?) which MN people also went to might have been the first.

BillThePony · 19/09/2018 22:45

I can't remember when I joined but dd is now 19 and I have had many user names.

I remember a lady called Xenia (I think) her posts used to crack me up and the woman who posted saying she was going on holiday long haul 2weeks post partum without her twins and would be water skiing. I was never clear wether it was a wind up.

I also remember all the moldiegate dramas.

I miss the shopping list days and the mumsnet Christmas gifting the most

JensenElephant · 19/09/2018 22:45

I can't recall my 1st user name- just searched my second one and that goes back to 2008. Different email account. So 2006 seems very possible. I now change names weekly, quoted 3 times that I know about in the Daily Mail.

LapdanceShoeshine · 19/09/2018 22:45

Giraffeski, were you fairyfly’s pal?

Justgivemeasoddingname · 19/09/2018 22:47

Dumbledoresgirl!!!! I remember you!! And I had no idea who Dumbledore was so I thought you were just some kind of girl like a dumbledores Grin
I remember Miaow and cod and SoupDragon, Oh and remember UCM? Under cover mum from what I remember. I'll never forget the time she had a smell fanjo so changed her name from UCM to ucm. Someone just posted "Is that you, UCM?" Hilarious.
I think I must have joined in 2005 when my first ds was born. Another mum on the birth thread had a little girl called Olivia who was born with CP and it upset me so much that my ds was fine and I don't think I wrote on the thread much after that. Don't feel good about that.

I remember there being about 20 acronyms, 10 topics in talk and about 7 emojis! I don't even think there were sub-headings in talk!!

AsAProfessionalFekko · 19/09/2018 22:47

I joined around 2005. Change name a few times (got rumbled a few times).

Tequilamockinbird · 19/09/2018 22:50

I've been around since about 2006. Tend to lurk more than I post though, even now!

The most vivid memory for me from back then was the poster who faked her own death. Think she was called Hills? she was a regular poster. I must've been quite naive about t'internet back then because I was genuinely really shocked that anyone could do that!

I also fondly remember the mn Xmas appeals as they were. I benefitted one Christmas after a really shit year, and I cried for days at people's generosity. It really touched me.

JustlikeDevon · 19/09/2018 22:50

Jan 2006 for me.
Even now, the very thought of "Is that you, UCM?" makes me chuckle.
