Can I ask you our opinion on cupcake flavours?

I’m doing a big food festival at the weekend. Obviously I know cupcakes are not for everyone but they still have their place so I’m trying to make my stall interesting and to stand out.

I have

Strawberry and prosecco
Gin and tonic
Strawberry milkshake
Salted caramel
Chocolate
Vanilla
Lemmon
Cookies and cream
Cherry bakewell
Carrot

Also have gluten free chocolate and lemon.

Having large cakes of
Red velvet (this is a vegan recipe but you wouldn’t know)
Victoria sponge
Chocolate orange
Tropical

I’m having brownies too and cookies. Have I missed anything?

Looks good to me and good to see basic flavours like vanilla and lemon as when I’ve done cake stall admittedly only for the local village fair or charity events the basic flavours are always the most popular.

Strawberry flavour is always a winner too

FlibbertyGiblets · 21/08/2018 11:35

Make sure they aren't sickly sweet. I would go back more than once if not ghastly claggy.

Do point out your vegan cakes and the gf ones.

"Tropical" cake - wosat then? Pineapple? Be clear.

Have fun and make a super profit.

What about coffee/mocha?

flippertygiblets it’s pineapple with a coconut frosting. I’ll change that then. Thank you.

I also find the lemon, chocolate, vanilla and carrot sell well. I use real butter in my buttercream so that the toppings aren’t too sweet as I hate it myself when a cake makes your teeth itch 🙈

mum2oneteen durr, coffee, my actual favourite. Would you do a 10 inch or cupcakes?

It’s a 3 day event and last year 104, 000 people visited over the weekend. 😳

Strawberry and prosecco

Strawberry is one of the difficult flavours (to get right) imo.

Gin and tonic

Interesting. Never heard of that a a cupcake flavour Wink (admittedly not a cupcake enthusiast...) But I'd be really tempted to try one. 👍

Strawberry milkshake I would stay far away from that one...

Salted caramel yes!
Chocolate yes!
Vanilla bit boring but delicious (if well done)

Lemmon I love tart, lemony flavours. Yes, yes!

Cookies and cream sure

Cherry bakewell that sounds lovely.

Carrot I like carrot cupcakes.

I think the design and overall "theme' of your stand (sleek with experimental flavours? More potion-y / witch-hunt? What I'd call classic pupcake with pastel colours etc?) might matter just as much as the actual cupcake flavours... Obviously also depends on your target audience (and particularly their age).

FlibbertyGiblets · 21/08/2018 11:43

Have a great time!

MeyMary · 21/08/2018 11:47

Have you missed something?

I don't think so, no.:) I personally really like raspberry but that's just a personal preference... (And it's probably too early for pumpkin, cinnamon etc.)

JamesDelayneysTattoos · 21/08/2018 11:48

meymary why would you keep away from strawberry milkshake?

I’m using fresh strawberry purée for the prosecco.

Gin and tonic , gin goes in the actual batter, I’ve never made these before but I’m testing today.

Vanilla is a sure fire and my best seller in celebration cakes.

I’m worried about how my stall will look. I even have a Pinterest board on market stalls 😂

OP posts:
JamesDelayneysTattoos · 21/08/2018 11:50

meymary I’m doing a white chocolate and raspberry cookie so didn’t think I needed cupcakes too. Should I add in and lose the strawberry milkshake.

I’m not sure who my market is if I’m honest. I imagine Saturday will be the quietest day so is a bit off an early experiment day

BigFatBloomers · 21/08/2018 11:50

I’m not sure about strawberry milkshake

I was going to suggest coffee cake. I love coffee cake and would want a slice of a big cake.

Peanut butter seems to be a big ingredient currently eg peanut butter brownie. I love blondies too and would proabaly pick one over a brownie.

yawning801 · 21/08/2018 11:50

How are you doing the alcoholic ones? Are you soaking strawberries in prosecco and putting them in the middle of each cupcake? Or are you putting it in the batter or the icing? Interested to know how they would work. Good luck!

yawning801 · 21/08/2018 11:51

Never mind, x-posted! Sounds amazing, can you mail some to me? Grin

JamesDelayneysTattoos · 21/08/2018 11:55

I’m doing peanut butter brownies too. I’ll add a large coffee then. Do you think coffee or coffee and coffee and walnut?

OP posts:
yawning801 · 21/08/2018 11:55

What about "Smores" cookies? They seem to be everywhere at the moment - it's just chocolate, marshmallows and digestives as far as I can tell!

yawning801 · 21/08/2018 11:56

Coffee, you never know who has allergies and you don't want to get into any fears of cross-contamination. Saying that, you are doing peanut butter... be careful I guess!

JamesDelayneysTattoos · 21/08/2018 11:59

yawning Dd made s’mores cookies last week and they were easy and yummy.ill add some of those. SHE HAs her food hygiene certificate so I should able to do them herself.

Just coffee then, what flavour buttercream would you have? More coffee or vanilla? Or even chocolate?

OP posts:
Moomicorn · 21/08/2018 12:00

I would try to make your gluten free ones more unusual flavours than chocolate and lemon, especially the chocolate.

It’s really easy to get gluten free chocolate cakes/brownies/cupcakes. The gluten free option most places is something chocolate. Occasionally it’s something lemon or carrot cake.

So if I see a gluten free chocolate cupcake I wouldn’t feel at all tempted to buy it, as it won’t be an unusual opportunity.

But recently went somewhere on holiday that sold gf and vegan cupcakes that were Elvia themed. Banana cupcake filled with salted caramel topped with peanut butter frosting. Decorations were a banana chip, some peanut brittle and a chocolate curl. We bought a box on the spot and went back twice the next few days for more, ordered them online then picked them up.

Moomicorn · 21/08/2018 12:00

Elvis themed!

BigFatBloomers · 21/08/2018 12:01

Coffee, with coffee buttercream please!
Sounds like you’re doing an amazing selection. I hope all goes really well.
Tell us a bit more about how your stall will look. I’m picturing polka dots.

Moomicorn · 21/08/2018 12:02

Oh, and think about having something that is gf and vegan or gf and dairy free. A lot of coeliacs cross react to dairy.

MeyMary · 21/08/2018 12:04

I’m using fresh strawberry purée for the prosecco
😍😍

There are too many strawberry [insert pretty much any kind of baked good] that seem to rely on strawberry jam. Or have a very strong artificial flavour...

why would you keep away from strawberry milkshake?

It sounds like it might be very sweet. There's also the strawberry factor
(Probably a mild form of childhood "trauma" 🙈🤢)

I’m worried about how my stall will look. I even have a Pinterest board on market stalls😂

I'm sure it will look great :)!

If it's more of a child centred / child friendly festival you could make a themed cupcake with a child friendly flavour? (princess/fairytail, magic/potion cauldron, pirates...?)

FumingMoomin · 21/08/2018 12:07

How about mint, or mint chocolate? That's the flavour I always look for but rarely find!

RebeccaCloud9 · 21/08/2018 12:10

Chocolate orange?

Or chocolate and caramel?

I think more than one choc based option is always good.

FumingMoomin · 21/08/2018 12:11

Or banoffee! Either as a cupcake or a banana loaf with a caramel topping - yum.
