I used to spend about £7 a week on Cadbury's but stopped eating it about six months ago when even the Twirl changed. I tried a few different makes but it all just leaves a greasy film in my mouth. I've replaced it with cake (mainly Battenburg). Surely their profits/sales are taking a massive hit?

efeslight · 18/08/2018 08:43

I agree, so much chocolate now is just sweet sugary but tasteless. Does anyone remember a marks and Spencer bar which was malty ? Just a normal sized bar. It was lovely and i haven't seen it for years

DianaT1969 · 18/08/2018 08:49

People must still buy the stuff, otherwise why would companies make it.

I'd love to know if sales have fallen in the UK. Does anyone happen to know? Large companies, such as Kraft/Mondelez Intl, who own Cadbury & G&B would never admit their recipe (and ethical) changes have been a disaster to sales. That they've destroyed world-leading brands and lost loyalty.
They can disguise sales figures by categorising with other products they sell.
Maybe a Daily Fail 'reporter' who hangs out on MN threads could actually do some research and come up with an interesting article...

bsbabas · 18/08/2018 08:56

Might just be growing up our taste buds have evolved I remember when sparkling water and salads were gross and bitter now they are a slice of fresh heaven. The aldi magnum ice creams are heaven though.

heartyrebel · 18/08/2018 09:00

What a shame Whittaker chocolate from NZ isnt exported to the UK yet. Its proper old school tasting and no palm oil

PolkerrisBeach · 18/08/2018 09:01

PIL still buy it. They have the palates of cardboard boxes and eat very bland, very boring food. Their idea of a "nice meal out" is the local Hungry Horse.

Maybe that's the market that Cadbury are going for.

inso · 18/08/2018 09:02

I was never a huge chocolate fan but my DH is, mainly Cadbury. I occasionally have a piece of whatever he's having and it is always vile! I don't bother any more.

I would always have a creme egg around Easter and a couple of bits of chocolate orange at Christmas. Again, not anymore.

I too have wondered about their profits slumping.

A colleague brought in a box of M&S chocs recently and they were lovely. Interested to try their F&N bar as that is what DH likes the most previously by Cadbury.

Thymeout · 18/08/2018 09:12

I second Whittaker's NZ chocolate. Like chocolate used to be. Pity it's so expensive on-line.

The only Cadbury's I still eat are flakes. I don't think they've changed? And M&S whole nut bars.

heartyrebel · 18/08/2018 09:14

How much is Whittaker online? It's very cheap here about $4 for a large block

WhatsYourFuckingProblem · 18/08/2018 09:16

Never knew about Love Cocoa, will definitely be ordering from them.
There’s a great chocolate company not far from me which sells to local farm shops, gift shops etc called The Chocolate Libertine.
I’d rather pay £3/£4 a bar for something edible and enjoyable from there than £1 for shit Cadbury’s.

StayAChild · 18/08/2018 09:29

I think Cadbury's still keep the sales up by mass marketing offers on display in supermarkets and smaller shops. The wrapping draws us in as it's so familiar and tempting, then the offer itself is too good to pass by: only £1 for a large bar of Cadbury's, better get a couple, only to realise how crap it all is once you crack it open.

The shape too. All modern and designed to look more than it really is. You can't even break a row of squares off now.

I think it's a taste that will become the norm to younger people who don't remember the lovely Cadbury's of old, that used to melt in your mouth. Now it's like chugging a lump of tasteless plasticine round in your mouth until it breaks down enough to swallow.

I had a bar of Galaxy for a change a few weeks ago and I couldn't believe how hard it was to get down. I remember Galaxy of old being so creamy.
I gave it to DH and that's something that never happens Grin

There's no going back sadly. Sad

JamieBravo

Thank you so much for posting about Love Cocoa - the Cadbury great grandson chocolate maker as I’ve just placed my first orderFlowers

Their 37% milk chocolate (hopefully like the original Dairy Milk?) is currently only £2 a bar - I’ve bought ten! Plus their mini chocolate honeycomb bars as they’re also reduced

ignatiusjreilly · 18/08/2018 09:38

LaurieFairyCake please will you report back once you've tried it? Especially on whether it's similar to the old dairy milk.

periperimenopause · 18/08/2018 09:45

Totally in agreement re. chocolate that I used to love now being utter shite. My dad keeps talking about when you used to be able to put teeth marks in a bar of Cadbury's

Ritter is still good and lindt.

My weekend treat is now ice cream. Haagen Daas new fruity four tub multipack. It has two flavours that are to die for...mango and raspberry and summer fruits.

Expensive though when you only eat half the pack. Luckily my house is a drop in for teenagers so I can get shot of the blueberry one and strawberries and cream flavour. Both taste nice but I have an issue with "bits" in ice cream or yoghurt. Also the Lindor style strawberries and cream limited addition balls are nice.

Totally agree re. M&S still being good for standard chocolate bars. I don't know if they still do it, but I used to love the bar that was layered milk, dark and white chocolate.

Heratnumber7 · 18/08/2018 09:48

I bought a bar of Green and Blacks butterscotch last night for a treat. I thought that would be safe - I haven't bought Cadbury's for a long time because it's gone horrible, and I've never liked Galaxy.

But G&B has been Cadbury-ised Sad
No snap, waxy horrible chocolate.

I used to bloody love chocolate, but there's no point any more.

bakingdemon · 18/08/2018 09:51

Since Kraft took over Cadbury I can't bear Cadbury products. They've meddled with the recipes so much and destroyed what used to be a great British brand.

PatchworkGirl · 18/08/2018 09:55

Try Montezuma. Expensive but I find a bar lasts me ages - it's really the only chocolate I'll eat now :(

LaurieFairyCake · 18/08/2018 09:59

Will do 👍🏻

bastardlyandmutley · 18/08/2018 10:01

efeslight I remember the malty chocolate from M&S. It was amazing and I always look for it when I go there despite not having had it in years.

I also remember when (possibly Bournville) used to do an Ovaltine chocolate in an orange wrapper with a picture of a woman on the front. This was when I was a child so many, many years ago but I wish they would bring that back.

StayAChild · 18/08/2018 10:01

Wouldn't you expect the tasters at Cadbury's to say that it's just not right? Or are they all next generation chocolate tasters? Doesn't anyone in the industry stand up for our chocolate?
I don't know how they dare exploit use the traditional wrapping.

IJustHadToNameChange · 18/08/2018 10:05

@inquiquotiokixul, I had linked to a particular page, but clearly Tesco are having none of it.

Search for Freddo, then select a product and it lists the ingredients below the product.

Freddo contains palm oil and shea butter, just like all Dairy Milk chocolate.

HollyGibney · 18/08/2018 10:10

It's different for sure. I was in Canada a couple of years ago,and bought a few bars of their Cadbury's. Tasted like chocolate used to taste when I was a kid. I planned a whole day of that holiday round getting to a supermarket to stock up on more. All gone now though Sad

ginghamstarfish · 18/08/2018 10:11

Re Lidl - just looking at my packet of 'fin carre rich milk chocolate' from there, Fair Trade too, which is just about the only chocolate we eat now - definitely no palm oil/fat etc, and it's gorgeous, halfway between milk and dark. Also sometimes buy Tesco own brand dark chocolate (Rainforest Alliance certified) in red packet, 75p for 150g, which I buy for making brownies etc. This also contains no crap.

Fatbelliedgirl · 18/08/2018 10:22

Cadburys Freddos definitely taste like the old recipe. I had heard they were made to the old recipe as apparently they are made in Ireland, where the old recipe is still used.

Oblomov18 · 18/08/2018 10:24

I can't seem to find anything I like in my nearest supermarkets: sainsbury and Aldi.
