Rank isn't it

SirHubzALot · 18/08/2018 01:28

Thornton's and Cadbury chocolate are vile now. Sickly sweet and waxy.

inquiquotiokixul · 18/08/2018 06:40

@IJustHadToNameChange what we're you intending to link to there? It just opened the grocery shopping page.

DuggeesWoggle · 18/08/2018 06:54

I don't really eat much chocolate but I do like to treat myself to a couple of those selector trays from Hotel Chocolat from time to time (they often have some at 30% off as they have a shorter shelf life). They are the best chocolates I have had (although I am not a connoisseur and don't get the really high end bars like you might find in Selfridges etc). Their milk chocolate is more cocoaey and less sweet, the dark is rich without being bitter and the white is pure creamy indulgence. They also manage to do really good liqueurs that taste really boozy without it being overpowering. Although they have become a huge brand now so I do hope they don't start cutting corners.

I can't believe we all used to love Thornton's chocolates for a treat, they are so sickly! I was given some green and blacks miniature dark squares for Christmas and they were really unpleasant, not the g&b I recognised - no flavour at all, an odd oily yet crumbly texture. The founders should be ashamed for selling out.

I hate to say it but a square of Tesco 70% dark chocolate (in the black packet with orangey writing) goes down really well as an after dinner treat with some almonds and cherries.

DuggeesWoggle · 18/08/2018 06:55

What was the name of the Cadbury chap's new company then? If it's really good I'm sure we all want to try it!

IdaDown · 18/08/2018 07:05

We’re trying to be a no palm product house - it’s bloody difficult. It’s in everything. Even Hotel Choc use it.

People must still buy the stuff, otherwise why would companies make it.

winterdeballesteros · 18/08/2018 07:23

It's horrible.

M&S giant chocolate buttons are the way to go. I also love a milk or dark bar with hazelnuts from there, it's not their own brand and it's quite expensive. Hard to find now though so think they may have discontinued 😫

LaBelleSauvage123 · 18/08/2018 07:33

I agree about Freddos. Started eating one per night as a way of stopping myself gorging a whole bar - haven’t checked ingredients but they do taste better.

sittingonacornflake · 18/08/2018 07:39

@DuggeesWoggle love cocoa

peachypetite · 18/08/2018 07:42

Agree! Had a twirl the other day it was disgusting.

Owletterocks · 18/08/2018 07:50

I was just saying this the other day. I usually get myself a chocolate treat for the weekend, I haven’t bothered this week because I couldn’t find anything I actually like

MsHomeSlice · 18/08/2018 07:56

thorntons did used to be nice, when they first started, man I loved the Apricot Parfait, I'd go and buy a whole bag of them sometimes.

I don't mind them now, but would place them firmly in the cheap christmas chocolate category....ds2 had braces forever, and wasn't allowed toffees and such so we took to buying a couple of the large Thorntons boxes instead of Quality Street ...less costly to the NHS in toffee damages! :o

Mind you QS and Roses are a whole other story...QS have not been the same since they did away with my favourite one....the little arch shaped one wrapped in gold foil with a paper wraparound on it that you could wear as a ring if your fingers were small enough :o

I had a QS purple one this last year and it was awful...like trying to choke down some sort of THING...nasty chocolate that crumbled and congealed, stringy but sloppy caramel and possibly a boiled button inside in place of an actual tasty hazelnut
I cannot bring myself to remember the gritty disappointment of the green triangle. :(

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 18/08/2018 07:58

Thorntons were good, back in the mist of times.

LadyBaneGrey · 18/08/2018 08:01

Those Nestle Crunch bars still taste fantastic (blue wrapper/red writing). Produced in Italy. I won’t but chocolate made in the UK now as it is all vile.

LadyBaneGrey · 18/08/2018 08:01

*wont’t BUY

SergeantPfeffer · 18/08/2018 08:05

Most Aldi and Lidl chocolate has palm oil in it, for those claiming it’s better. The exceptions are the posher ranges like moser Roth (which is lush).

Another vote for M&S- theit dark chocolate mountain bars 😍
Divine do a dark chocolate hazelnut bar that I love as well.

Allegorical · 18/08/2018 08:15

Has anyone got a list of decent chocolate you can get without palm oil? Preferably British but doesn’t have to be.

Really don’t like Lindt or moser Roth. Find them both sickly. Last time I tried divine I didn’t think it tasted of anything. But it was a while ago so willing to try again.

kenandbarbie · 18/08/2018 08:17

Palm oil HmmAngry

kenandbarbie · 18/08/2018 08:23

I think wispas are still ok and flakes? And ripples?? Is it something to do with the texture that they can't put too much palm oil in?

I'm most sad about choc orange. They are now vile. And if you look at the shape they are sort of hollowed our with gaps between each segment and no chunky middle bit. So not only are you getting foul tasting chocolate, there's also less of it.

PolkerrisBeach · 18/08/2018 08:27

Palm oil. It's cheap, but makes chocolate taste like wax or lard. And it's killing orang utans.

We now only buy palm oil free - Co-Op own brand fair trade, Aldi Moser Roth or the plain milk chocolate Lindt. Yes it's more expensive but it tastes SO much better.

MrsMozart · 18/08/2018 08:28

I've just about given up on chocolate, but had two Twix and some milk chocolate digestives over the day yesterday (don't judge, bad week). Paid for it with horrible innards and many bathroom and bowl trips.

That's me back to staying off the sweet stuff. Plus, I'd forgotten about the palm oil issue BlushAngry

DianaT1969 · 18/08/2018 08:31

Lindt still tastes good.
Cadbury and Green & Blacks were bought by American firm Kraft. Both now taste awful. Cadbury no longer uses Fair Trade beans. Green & Blacks no longer use organic beans.
Palm oil was added and gives it that greasy texture.
I'll never buy Cadburys or G&B again. I used to love Cadbury's and my friends living abroad would ask me to bring them Buttons, Dairy Milk, Fruit & Nut... that stopped, nobody wants it now.

olderthanyouthink · 18/08/2018 08:33

Try finding nut free chocolate that's nice. I think trace amounts of nuts give me a headache and obviously I can't have Lindt or Milka.

So Galaxy it is for now 😐

DianaT1969 · 18/08/2018 08:34

*@slippermaiden *
Try green and blacks, it tastes heavenly

Have you tried one recently? It used to be good, but is a tasteless, waxy brick now. I recommend you try a Lindt bar instead to notice the difference. Or seek out artisan bars by smaller makers.

Mominatrix · 18/08/2018 08:35

I've never had a problem with declining quality of chocolate...then again, I stick to high percentage cocoa brands like Valrhona, Rococo, and Artisan du Chocolate. Willy's is also good.
