Staying at in-laws with dc and there is no food

Arrived at in-laws with DH (their son) and our two dc’s. For context, they are very well off. Live in huge house in the country, spend six months a year on cruises, have new car etc.

This is the first time we have visited them in their new house. Normally they stay at our house where we cook meals for them, provide wine and snacks and generally be very hospitable. They certainly enjoy all our food and drink.

This is what they served DH and I for dinner; two small roast potato’s, one small parsnip, teaspoon of peas and carrots, three slices of chicken. Our dc who are 11 and 12 had the same but with one roast potato rather than two. Dessert was one scoop of ice cream. DH asked if he could have another scoop but was told no as the carton (think Ben & Jerry’s small sized carton) had to last them a week.

By evening the dc were ravenous. I asked mil if dc could have a slice of toast or cereal. Was told they only had muesli and one small loaf of brown seeded bread. DC do not like either. I asked if there was any fruit was told no. DH asked if there was a bag of crisps, again no.

I’m not proud of this but DH and I went through the fridge and cupboards trying to find something to eat but the cupboards were literally bare.

DH went out this morning to buy some bread, cheese etc (which fil helped himself too) and I suggested to mil we go out to dinner but she insisted she is cooking. Dreading another tiny meal & the dc’s being hungry.

DH said they are just being tight by not spending money on food and drink. I quite frankly want to go home. Simple things like they knew we were coming but the bathroom had no towels or soap, no mirror or lamp in guest bedroom. Could they not have bought some cornflakes & snacks knowing most kids don’t eat muesli!

They have always been mean with money, poor DH as a uni student was penniless living off toast and pawning his stuff while his parents refused and financial assistance.

I used manageress purely from the nostalgia. Haud yer wheesht is another granny nostalgia trip coming to mind.

YeTalkShiteHen · 16/08/2018 11:27

My Grannie’s best friend was the manageress in Scotmid near us and she used it because it was a big deal when she became manageress as she was the first woman to do it! She referred to herself as a feminist manageress!

FrayedHem · 16/08/2018 11:37

My gran came from a v poor background living in deprived areas etc. They moved to Castlemilk when it was shiny and new! My grandpa got TB when my mum was 6ish and that combined with his war injuries meant he was unable to work again. My gran worked hard to provide my mum with the best she could and encouraged her to concentrate on her academics for a better future.

She also had a kitchenette but I think that's an ok term still.

And I bet your lovely gran was proud of her job and its title @FrayedHem.

@AjasLipstick ok then......but your tone was condescending and snide still. And I'll stick by that opinion. These women worked their fucking arses off in these days, probably for not a lot of money. And I know exactly what my cludgie cleaning granny would have said to your snooty response. And I can just picture the look on your face. Mr Google will tell you what a cludgie is too.

QueenoftheSilverDollar12 · 16/08/2018 12:23

Her face not your face obvs......as I'm not that good 😉

midgesummer · 16/08/2018 12:48

There isn't anything wrong using the term manageress when describing people who had that as a job title and would have been proud of that too. I wouldn't use it for me and it would make sense talking about one of the gran's friends. I'm not really seeing the confusion unless it was a term used solely in certain parts of the UK? In which case it's always good to learn new things.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/08/2018 13:13

I see nothing wrong with the term "Manageress".

Frayed - in order not to cause an furore, in future please convolute your sentences, and perhaps use the expression "managed" rather than manager or manageress, then the easily-confused will be able to cope.

Just because a term is old/outdated, doesn't mean it is inappropriate.

FrayedHem · 16/08/2018 13:24

You're very right SchadenfreudePersonified . I'll do my best

Staying at in-laws with dc and there is no food
ladymariner · 16/08/2018 13:33

Well, that was unexpected! Thanks for the explanation but tbh, when I asked what was wrong with the term 'manageress' it was in an incredulous tone....along the lines of, ffs, what now??? I too still don't see anything wrong with it.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/08/2018 13:34

Frayed

Grin

That's the ticket!

YeTalkShiteHen · 16/08/2018 14:12

I still call it a cludgie! Grin

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 16/08/2018 14:48

My obsessively feeding grannie was also a manageress of a clothes shop, and very proud of it too!

Maybe all the narky nippy sweeties on here need a bit more to eat. I'll get some scones on. Or maybe even some Biscuits Grin

midgesummer · 16/08/2018 15:26

As long as they are empire Biscuits you should be fine.

woodhill · 16/08/2018 17:27

Are we not meant to say actress either? Lol

Does anyone care that much

I liked the history lesson

QueenoftheSilverDollar12 · 16/08/2018 17:30

It was just the snooty looking down on the term manageress that bugged me. Glad I wasn't the only one though.....honestly, how come folk can take offence at the slightest wee thing 🙄

Meckity1 · 16/08/2018 17:33

I'm old enough to have been called 'madam chairman'

That was then, this is now.

FrayedHem · 16/08/2018 17:35

My gran always used to get chocolate gingers from Marksess and Spenceress M&S when we were coming to stay. Maybe not authentic Scottish food but was very fancy. She used to come down to look after us in the summer holidays when my parents were working. She'd bring Irn Brew down with her and put on parties for my pals and me. I do wonder if there was somewhere near us that sold it! But it was a sweet tradition.

YeTalkShiteHen · 16/08/2018 17:41

Irn Bru used to be awesome and then they changed the recipe and it’s stinking!

FrayedHem · 16/08/2018 17:49

They've changed it? That's just rude. Presume to do with the sugar-tax stuff.

I wished we'd written down my gran's stories of when she worked in the munition factory in WW2. Although maybe it was more her gift for story telling than the content itself.

My mum and dad were keen on pub quizzes and always used the name the Bar-L. Not many in Essex got it!

Showpony2 · 16/08/2018 17:50

YeTalk - Irn Bru was one of the best drinks ever but now they put a load of sweetners in and it’s changed the flavour completely!! Horrible!

SimonBridges · 16/08/2018 18:27

Are we not meant to say actress either? Lol

No. Actor, like comedian is used for both men and women now.

YeTalkShiteHen · 16/08/2018 18:28

FrayedHem aye that’s exactly it, it’s bogging now 🤮

Showpony2 my pal owns a shop and had a stash of the old stuff Grin but it’s all gone now Sad

MrsSarahSiddons · 16/08/2018 18:32

Actor, like comedian is used for both men and women now.
What a load of twaddle. Frances Mcdormand won Best ACTRESS at the Oscars this very year.

PollyFlinderz · 16/08/2018 19:58

Glad I wasn't the only one though.....honestly, how come folk can take offence at the slightest wee thing 🙄

I think there are ghosts who haunt threads looking for things to be offended about so they can start a rammy. But the great thing about this thread is that its been tried a few times and each time its been thwarted and people have gone back to having a laugh and a real wander down memory lane.

PollyFlinderz · 16/08/2018 20:01

I wished we'd written down my gran's stories of when she worked in the munition factory in WW2. Although maybe it was more her gift for story telling than the content itself.

That would have been something!
