I was just going to ask if you did anything more substantial. I think I feel more comfortable with comedy myself. When I try to do serious it tends to go turgid Grin and making the jokes stops me from going off the rails too far.

Of course being out of the UK doesn't help for the prospect of getting thing published, you lose touch with the zeitgeist and all that Xmas Grin

Holly, do you really have pigs?!

MrsLNP, so you are a published feature author then? How exciting! And you probably don't want to talk about this in public but I hope your big changes aren't unpleasant ones :(

Theresahollyinyourmind · 02/01/2011 18:24

So sorry about the double posting, t'interweb had a conniption fit. Ha ha only human pigs Twiggy

OP posts:
PassTheTwiglets · 02/01/2011 18:26

Oh that's a shame, I was strangely enjoying the image of you being all Felicity Kendall on us :) Also would've been fun to say you had a faaaarm in Arfricaa...

Theresahollyinyourmind · 02/01/2011 18:34

Ooh, Twigs, I am so far removed from the Good Life philosphy, you wouldn't believe. I am too fond of my creature comforts. Ahd I wouldn't be seen dead in dungarees, my deah.
Perhaps you could say I'm more of an Ab Fab wannabe.

Though I don't know what those lot would think of Guy, prolly haul him off to Gucci to replace all that pleather with the real thing.

OP posts:
PrairieOyster · 02/01/2011 18:58

It wasn't pleather! It WAS the real thing! Tut tut!

MrsLucasNorth · 02/01/2011 19:06

I'm a trained journalist, but there's not much where I live jobwise and moving to London would have caused some major issues, so went into the pre-press production side for our biggest local paper. I started doing some freelance stuff but it didn't take off as I'd hoped 'cos I fell pregnant with DD and had a pretty torrid time of it.

Feel like I'm finally getting my mojo back Grin!

PrairieOyster · 02/01/2011 19:07

Terrible news about Dalton Mill. Never been there, but have viewed several location shots on various websites. The news said it was only one wing destroyed, I wonder if it was anywhere near the yard and the Thornton's house etc. I will be extra sad if that is the case.

Theresahollyinyourmind · 02/01/2011 19:08

Really, Oyster? Sometimes it looks a wee bit too thin and shiny. Or was it Jitrois, LOL?

OP posts:
Theresahollyinyourmind · 02/01/2011 19:11

Wasn't the house somewhere else entirely? or was that the Higginses cottage etc that was up in Scotland somewhere?

OP posts:
Theresahollyinyourmind · 02/01/2011 19:13

Oh, MrsLNP, re your mojo, I do hope so. Wouldn't that be lovely if you got your career sorted again.

OP posts:
MrsLucasNorth · 02/01/2011 19:20

It would be lovely, Twigs, although I'm going to try the fiction route rather than more features. I like the fact you can be more 'in depth' and tbh (and I know it sounds crackers) I don't actually enjoy interviewing people!

Just looking on BBC entertainment news - apparently it's 29th July for Capt. America.

Theresahollyinyourmind · 02/01/2011 19:26

Oh, poo, the 29th, that's deffo out for me then. I shall have to appoint proxies.

Re interviewing , i expect you'd be open to making an exception in, ahem, special cases?

OP posts:
MrsLucasNorth · 02/01/2011 19:34

Oh definitely! It's not so much the interviewing itself, it's all the 'cold calling' you have to do to set them up. Even though you're giving someone potentially valuable publicity I always feel like I'm making a nuisance of myself.

So much journalism is done over the phone & internet now too - I think it loses its excitement to a degree. I know a couple of my old mentors have taken early retirement because the industry has become so far removed from that direct contact style if reporting.

The paper I used to work for isn't even put together in this country anymore!

Theresahollyinyourmind · 02/01/2011 19:41

I don't suppose you ever read that Isaac Asimov book, Caves of Steel Written years ago, before the internet -- but on that planet, no one ever met with anybody else in RL, it was all done by a sort of 3D conference call set up, holograms if you will. And the real thing was regarded as a bit pervy and not very clean. Seems we are going that way Grin

OP posts:
MrsLucasNorth · 02/01/2011 19:46

I haven't read it but have always meant to look at his stuff (worked in a bookshop in my teens and they seemed to have fascinating cover illustrations). May have to add that to my reading list.

Theresahollyinyourmind · 02/01/2011 19:50

There are several in the series. They are murder mysteries about this detective who has an android sidekick. Who is delightful, nothing like Marvin at all.

OP posts:
MrsLucasNorth · 02/01/2011 19:57

Just read the blurb on amazon! They also do it as an audiobook so may see if I can get one or the other via the library (I have the Sunne in Splendour waiting for me on Tuesday).

Also, if anyone's interested Cold Feet series 5 is £3.39 at the mo!

Theresahollyinyourmind · 02/01/2011 20:44

Do you think if I wait long enough they will give me stuff for free?

OP posts:
PrairieOyster · 02/01/2011 20:53

I love Asimov, though it's been awhile since I read The Caves of Steel. The robot sidekick is R.Daneel Olivaw, a character that appears in many Asimov books.

I have the Captain America release date in my calendar though I suspect it will be hard to miss, given my cough interests, when the time comes. More imminently, I think the trailer will be out very soon!

I'm not a journalist but my job requires me to interview people regularly and yes, the cold calling/setup/explanations is a pain, and sometimes I dread the interviews too, but generally once I am in there, I quite enjoy them. What I enjoy less is the detailed write up of the notes afterwards which I have to do, otherwise I would not remember a thing.

PrairieOyster · 02/01/2011 20:56

Just saw about Cold Feet S5 - tempted!!!!

MrsLucasNorth · 02/01/2011 21:01

Love the writing, and researching too, Oyster. The daft thing is, I can talk for England and have done a fair bit of reception work where you never know who or what is on the end of the phone but when I'm basically in control of the situation I hate it!

Is anyone else watching 'Zen'?

SnowyMoon · 02/01/2011 21:04

Blimey I only went out for a couple of hours! Sorry, it's hard to get on here with Dh and DCs home all the time. When is the captain America release date Oyster?
