Well, we've had Robert Owen and New Lanark. I have to hand it to Robert Owen; he founded a school on very progressive lines whereas Mr Thornton merely (although this is still commendable, of course) paid for a child to attend a school.

Ok. Dropping off comms for a while. Will be back later if not snowbound and/or excessively intoxicated.

Meanwhile, here's an urgent delivery for Theresa (look in the basket) and .

Dear Johnny was not too well off though, what with the price of cotton sky-rocketing. And he failed to invest in those dodgy schemes because he was too Upright and Worthy.

Have fun, and be good! Thanks for the parting gift which I shall unwrap at leisure

Bodenbabe · 29/11/2010 21:37

So sorry Flowers, yes it was your DD - I misread who had posted, as MrsLN's post was immediately after yours. That's twice today I've done that - goodness, what is up with me today?! Maybe that Lucas picture I posted had more of an effedct on me than I realised :)

You know what's putting me off TTL more than anything at the moment? He can't use apostrophes correctly.

asmallbunchofflowers · 29/11/2010 21:38

Shame I've gotta go out. This ought to be Victorian Mill-Owner Night. Keep the flame burning for me, Theresa, although obviously not in the mill as that would provoke Mr Thornton's wrath.

I'm watching Sparkhouse!

Bodenbabe · 29/11/2010 21:41

How is it, Oyster?

PrairieOyster · 29/11/2010 21:46

It's good, but don't want to spoil it. It's been a while since I watched it, good to watch the whole thing, rather than just the bits you see in fanvids.

Bodenbabe · 29/11/2010 21:48

Will watch that at some point. I am just BURSTING to watch N&S though, I think I may implode before Christmas.

PrairieOyster · 29/11/2010 21:51

I forgot about this! Not really a spoiler - somebody hanged the dog!

Theresaholeinyourmind · 29/11/2010 21:52

Grin at incorrect apostrophes, Boden. I am glad I am not the only one who fusses about that sort of thing.

Did you know that the underside of Nottingham is riddled with caves? I didn't but you'd think script-writers would have made much use of such helpful plot-devices.

PrairieOyster · 29/11/2010 21:53

Oh Boden - N&S is less than a fiver new at Amazon - watch it for goodness sake!!!!! do you have to wait till Christmas!

PrairieOyster · 29/11/2010 21:56

Sparkhouse is one of those gritty northern dramas that you'll sure you'll hate, but it's actually quite watchabe and it has very good acting and although Mr A does not have a lead role, it's an important and significant one and well worth the £3.99 or so I paid for it.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 29/11/2010 22:04

I must put that on my (long) list then, Oyster.

I think I must have paid the least of anyone for a copy of N&S, they gave it away free with the Daily Mail a couple of years ago. As I think I've related rather gleefully before.

Oh, who's that rather interesting chappie with the cravat sez I. But being more interested in the social history aspect I didn't really twig on till RH hit our screens a few months ago.

Bodenbabe · 29/11/2010 22:09

Oyster, yes I have to wait because it's being bought for me for Xmas, dammit :) I put it on the list before I realised what an important study area it would be (I didn't really know anything about it at the time).

Re. illiterate Lucas, he keeps using apostrophes for plurals - pot's and Leprechaun's being today's offences. FGS, the Real Lucas would be enough of a class act to know how to use sodding punctuation.

Bodenbabe · 29/11/2010 22:11

So had you not seen Spooks until a few months ago either, Theresa?

Theresaholeinyourmind · 29/11/2010 22:14

So now we know it's Kevin and Perry, Boden.
Ye shall know them by their greengrocers apostrophe's. Grin

Agreed, even after eight year's years in a Russian prison, Real Lucas would not do that.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 29/11/2010 22:18

No, Boden. Or rather I had seen series 1 and I think some of 2, but not series 7 or 8, I had to get the DVDs for that. After being intrigued with YT and other stuff posted here.

Bodenbabe · 29/11/2010 22:21

:o at calling them greengrocers apostrophe's - how delightfully observant!

Have you gone straight to 7 & 8 then? Having only seen 9, we're watching them chronologically (up to S3 at the moment - poor, lovely Tom!!)

Bodenbabe · 29/11/2010 22:26

Gotta dash now - happy studying, all.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 29/11/2010 22:27

Yup, I thought why mess about, might as well get down to the nitty gritty. And I couldn't afford to get all the others anyway, with other things prioritised

I don't think I shall ever be able to watch series 9. Series 7 and 8 are so sad for him all the time. I just want to cry every time he is on screen with those sad blue eyes. :(

Bodenbabe · 29/11/2010 22:38

Oh, I didn't know that 7 & 8 were sad!! Oh, poor Lucas :(

As for not being able to afford all the others, well... we didn't exactly pay for them, nudge nudge, wink wink...

Theresaholeinyourmind · 29/11/2010 22:45

He's always remembering Russia, and being tortured, and then there's the Sarah thing, that betrayal.

PrairieOyster · 29/11/2010 22:55

You must watch Spooks 9 - if only for the thud factor.

Some nice moments in Sparkhouse! And some angsty ones too!
