My child was in a S Club Juniors, ask me anything

In 2001, my child auditioned for a CBBC show called ‘S Club Search’ and got a place in a child pop group who initially were meant to support S Club 7 on a one time support gig basis. This band was called S Club Juniors, later known as S Club 8.

The band ended up taking off and we basically had to sign or children away to Simon Fuller’s management to release a single. The kids were given tutors and chaperones, and spent most of their time in hotels (the ones London based stayed either their parents) or on the road. After that, they went on tour and I only saw my child once every couple of months. It was brutal but I knew that’s what they wanted to do.

they released two albums and the second one didn’t do that well, Simon Fuller tried them on a TV show called I Dream, however that also tanked. My child will admit that themselves. They all got dropped when aged 14-17. He said they had grown out of their roles a bit.

Now they are in their late thirties and trying to get back into the entertainment industry fully but it’s difficult. They’ve never quite got over their time in the band. They released music but it never really went anywhere. They would never say so, but it doesn’t help them that two of their fellow band members went on to become big stars, both were in a chart topping girl band and now are TV presenters.

their band (minus the two still-successful members) were meant to reunite for a TV show a long while ago, but for various reasons it didn’t happen. When S Club reunited, S Club juniors didn’t get asked to reunite as there was ‘no call’ for it and only a few were up for reuniting. (My child, and another boy and girl member)

they are still acquaintances with S club 7 and went to Paul Cattermoles funeral.

I know my (now adult) child doesn’t regret the choices they made as a child, but feels sad as an adult.

AMA- child (now adult) is also here to answer questions too and is happy to answer questions about specific members and music!

How did being in the band affect your child meeting someone? Do they have kids now?

Ireolu · 02/05/2025 21:55

BeEagerEagle · 02/05/2025 21:51

No members resent them. All are proud of what they’ve achieved. I think some just struggled with comparing themselves.

The word jealousy means 'showing envious resentment because of another person's achievements'. It's a word you have used more than once hence my interpretation. If its not the intended description, thanks for clarifying..

Patchworktulips · 02/05/2025 21:55

If so what do their kids think of their music?

Maybe envy is the right word? A lot of members compare themselves to them but if you ask they will all say how proud they are.

How much were they actually connected with a club 7? Was it name only ? Did they ever meet up or anything?

SC7 helped judge the final selection of children. They toured with SC7 on their British dates. It intended on only being one date but ended up being all of them. They toured with them again in a tour called ‘S Club united’. They also did a few silly tv interviews with them. They filmed a scene in Miami 7 I think it was called? Chasing s club down the road.

outside of “work” they rarely saw them. The age gap was significant so they rarely moved in the same circles.

And it's that still true today? Do any of them keep in contact

Sometimes they bump into them at the odd PR events and take the odd selfie but not really anymore than that. A lot tried to distance themselves from Jo after celebrity big brother.

Jay - successful west end career
Daisy -
Calvin
Hannah - works in a bank
Stacey
Connor - boy who was ditched
Aaron in demand choreographer eg Taylor Swift so would say that’s successful!
Rochelle
Frankie

I’m intrigued anyone got an idea of who? 🤣

Sandylittleknees · 02/05/2025 22:12

OP - I think you are unwise to be doing this thread. You’ve said negative things about identified people and that isn’t a very good idea.

I have carefully read back and I don’t think I’ve said anything negative bar the reason one of the members got removed.

Calvin's also fairly successful, Cece Frank's was married to a footballer and Daisey is, so can't imagine their lives have been too terrible.

Don’t know why some people get so uptight about this, it’s a fun thread! I hardly think Rochelle or Frankie will care or it would be on their radar 🤦‍♀️

Both know (as do the others) and are fine with it, as long as no kids or spouses are mentioned.

Erm, op has claimed that an easily identifiable person was dropped from the show for being inappropriate. That’s the sort of thing people take legal action over.

ilovesushi · 02/05/2025 22:17

Only read your Op, but that sounds brutal for your child and also for you and the whole family. I can understand why you agreed to it, and why they wanted to do it, but in that situation the child goes from a loving home where decisions are made in the best interest of their health, happiness, education etc to a brutal world under the spotlight where they are commodity to make money for a company with their welfare secondary.

I never understand this thing of taking children from their parents in the entertainment industry. I remember seeing a documentary about Jamie Bell and the making of Billie Elliott the film. Once he was cast, that was it, he was whisked away from his family. It just seemed heart wrenchingly sad.

Will read the rest of your posts with interest.

Said person has since legally changed their name and uses a different one professionally too now.

During a 2021 public instagram live; other members of the band discussed this boy in detail. So it’s already public knowledge. Hope that helps.

Well that wouldn’t be hard to figure out would it?

The kids were by all accounts taken care of very very well and a lot of parents worried their child would resent them forever if they didn’t let them join.

it was hard though because most parents including myself assumed this would be a one performance experience. It was only after they got extended to perform on all the UK concerts that Simon Fuller spoke to us about them potentially releasing a single.

Only thinking of you OP, you don’t need to justify yourself to me!

leopardprintpants · 02/05/2025 22:27

No question but I am 34 so I remember wishing I was in S Club Juniors so badly.. only a few nights ago I introduced my 8 year old daughter to some of their songs and we had a little dance in the kitchen to "one step closer" 🪩

I hope your child is happy and thriving OP.

Nothing the other members would be uncomfortable with, they’ve discussed it fully with them- they still have a WhatsApp group to this day.

So the rest of S Club Juniors are just on a WhatsApp group waiting for women on Mumsnet to ask them a question. Bizarre.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 02/05/2025 22:30

How did you manage big family events and their birthday during this time? Did DC just miss out? Did it affect you?
I know teen DC can be tricky, but nanas 80th birthday or uncle Franks Wedding would still be important enough ... especially getting up to mischief with siblings and cousins!

It was agreed the Q&A was ok as long as spouses and kids and the obvious (ie personal info like contact info) wasn’t divulged. You aren’t obliged to ask anything
