My child was in a S Club Juniors, ask me anything

BeEagerEagle · 02/05/2025 20:07

In 2001, my child auditioned for a CBBC show called ‘S Club Search’ and got a place in a child pop group who initially were meant to support S Club 7 on a one time support gig basis. This band was called S Club Juniors, later known as S Club 8.

The band ended up taking off and we basically had to sign or children away to Simon Fuller’s management to release a single. The kids were given tutors and chaperones, and spent most of their time in hotels (the ones London based stayed either their parents) or on the road. After that, they went on tour and I only saw my child once every couple of months. It was brutal but I knew that’s what they wanted to do.

they released two albums and the second one didn’t do that well, Simon Fuller tried them on a TV show called I Dream, however that also tanked. My child will admit that themselves. They all got dropped when aged 14-17. He said they had grown out of their roles a bit.

Now they are in their late thirties and trying to get back into the entertainment industry fully but it’s difficult. They’ve never quite got over their time in the band. They released music but it never really went anywhere. They would never say so, but it doesn’t help them that two of their fellow band members went on to become big stars, both were in a chart topping girl band and now are TV presenters.

their band (minus the two still-successful members) were meant to reunite for a TV show a long while ago, but for various reasons it didn’t happen. When S Club reunited, S Club juniors didn’t get asked to reunite as there was ‘no call’ for it and only a few were up for reuniting. (My child, and another boy and girl member)

they are still acquaintances with S club 7 and went to Paul Cattermoles funeral.

I know my (now adult) child doesn’t regret the choices they made as a child, but feels sad as an adult.

AMA- child (now adult) is also here to answer questions too and is happy to answer questions about specific members and music!

I think this is an Ill advised thread. It’s not hard to work out who your daughter is and it’s not respectful of her privacy, particularly as a trash ‘news’ site might pick it up.

Who do you think the daughter is? I get the impression it’s a son not a daughter

Whippetlovely · 02/05/2025 21:31

You haven't answered any of the questions about how much money they got.

MereNoelle · 02/05/2025 21:30

Not Frankie and Rochelle I assume?

yes, they are in the group.

I reckon you’re Aaron’s Mum.

I have answered they got paid a regular salary further back and what my child did with theirs. I don’t know if the other members have spent or invested theirs, money/earnings isn’t something that is usually discussed between us but all got paid the same.

Do you think they got paid fairly for the amount of work they did?

JMSA · 02/05/2025 21:34

Tell us about the famous people they’ve met and who was nice … and who wasn’t! Thanks.

yes, they are in the group.

You said earlier that Rochelle said she remembered your adult child on meeting them at a reunion. But if they are in a WhatsApp-type group together, why would she say that? (as if your child is a stranger that they vaguely remember)

I agree. I don’t think a son would be as jealous of Rochelle and Frankie’s subsequent success.

Eachpeachpearprune · 02/05/2025 21:36

Did you really ask your child (adult) to post on the WhatsApp group: ‘Is it ok if my mum does an AMA about us on Mumsnet?’ 🙈

Personally no. Obviously they could only work a certain number of hours, but they used to have to get up at 4am if they had a breakfast type show to do (GMTV, CBBC) or 6am otherwise. According to my child some even nearly fell asleep when having tutoring, a lot of them said it felt like doing an adult job. None complained about the money though probably because it was more than any pocket money they ever had, and kids that age don’t think about the future and bills!

However they were a very expensive band to keep. The first few months, the non locals were put up in a 4 star hotel. The chaperones cost a lot and there had to be at least 3 at any given time.

Rochelle, Frankie and one of the other male members very rarely talk in the group. They will only reply when tagged. Both have separate phones for work and ‘play’ so aren’t often around on the number my child has for them.

It was discussed between us before posting. Nobody is obliged to ask anything.

This feels a strange thread, almost OP as if you want to draw attention to the backstory…but daren't...not sure why.

Feels quite personal about some of the other band members.

Are you hoping that this is picked up by journalists and recreates fame for your DC?

The OP seems to be trying to grab the attention of tabloid hacks to sell a story. The OP will be lucky to receive a free coffee.

You would be very surprised. A lot did struggle with it especially as almost all had put out music after the split. It was tough on a lot of them.

Imagine being this starved for attention…

MolkosTeenageAngst · 02/05/2025 21:48

Why aren’t you happy to say which one your child was? You’ve been happy to answer questions about specific band members, isn’t it a bit unfair to be writing specifics about some band members but giving answers about your own child anonymity?

User4564477656 · 02/05/2025 21:50

Sorry no question but I LOVED them!

Ireolu · 02/05/2025 21:50

Not sure what to make of this thread. I was not a fan of S club Jrs. Although only a few yrs younger than me it just wasn't my vibe. I feel sad for members that didn't have the success that they felt they deserved. It's hard not to realise your dream.

I am however not sure reminiscing/always looking back/resenting those who did have the success helps though. I don't have Rochelle or Frankie's money or fame but I wouldn't want their lives.

No members resent them. All are proud of what they’ve achieved. I think some just struggled with comparing themselves.

I'm now not sure. I was sure the op had posted a message saying " .... Another girl.." , implying her child was a girl. I can't find it now but.
When looking through the messages I've noticed she said " a boy (not my son) which implies a boy. Anyway . . Do I need to get a life.... probably. Will I? No.

Patchworktulips · 02/05/2025 21:53

Do you remember receiving fan mail for your child? If you’re the mum I now think you are (I thought you were someone else earlier!), I wrote to you and your child as we were given your contact details. Might have been where you worked, I can’t remember exactly but it wasn’t your home address! But you wrote me a really lovely card back and included something from your son too. I still have it in a scrapbook somewhere!!
Thank you :)

The girls surprisingly didn’t get much fan mail but all the boys did, especially at the start.

the fan mail would be checked by parents or chaperones at first which was embarrassing for all of them but was just to keep them safe.
