My child was in a S Club Juniors, ask me anything

In 2001, my child auditioned for a CBBC show called ‘S Club Search’ and got a place in a child pop group who initially were meant to support S Club 7 on a one time support gig basis. This band was called S Club Juniors, later known as S Club 8.

The band ended up taking off and we basically had to sign or children away to Simon Fuller’s management to release a single. The kids were given tutors and chaperones, and spent most of their time in hotels (the ones London based stayed either their parents) or on the road. After that, they went on tour and I only saw my child once every couple of months. It was brutal but I knew that’s what they wanted to do.

they released two albums and the second one didn’t do that well, Simon Fuller tried them on a TV show called I Dream, however that also tanked. My child will admit that themselves. They all got dropped when aged 14-17. He said they had grown out of their roles a bit.

Now they are in their late thirties and trying to get back into the entertainment industry fully but it’s difficult. They’ve never quite got over their time in the band. They released music but it never really went anywhere. They would never say so, but it doesn’t help them that two of their fellow band members went on to become big stars, both were in a chart topping girl band and now are TV presenters.

their band (minus the two still-successful members) were meant to reunite for a TV show a long while ago, but for various reasons it didn’t happen. When S Club reunited, S Club juniors didn’t get asked to reunite as there was ‘no call’ for it and only a few were up for reuniting. (My child, and another boy and girl member)

they are still acquaintances with S club 7 and went to Paul Cattermoles funeral.

I know my (now adult) child doesn’t regret the choices they made as a child, but feels sad as an adult.

AMA- child (now adult) is also here to answer questions too and is happy to answer questions about specific members and music!

What’s Rochelle really like?
I’ve seen online that she is very meticulous about her public image (obviously might not be true!)

with Rochelle now she seems to be distancing herself a lot from the SC8 thing. She claimed to not remember it during an interview which surprised my child.

she struggled with jealousy of Frankie having female lead a bit, but most of the other girls also struggled with this.

during the band she was a good dancer, but was always paranoid about being the tallest one there/ Taller than the boys. R and Frankie knew each other before auditions as they went to the same stage school.

Did your child make good money (ie deposit for a house or similar)?

HundredPercentUnsure · 02/05/2025 20:23

Are you trying to promote the group after their failed reunion attempt?

babasaclover · 02/05/2025 20:23

They were never good enough and didn’t make it - literally never heard of them not sure what there is to ask?

feels like you are trying to somehow relaunch something that never was.

MrsKateColumbo · 02/05/2025 20:24

Does your child still get an income from it?

Is your child still working in the industry?

So they have children? S CLUB grandkids!

DonnaSueWeloveyou · 02/05/2025 20:24

How old were they when they auditioned?

Was your child also at a stage school beforehand?

Amazing! Absolutely fascinating. My DC have an agent and have worked (a tiny bit!) in theatre and tv.
I guess my question is - How has it affected your mental health? And how did you cope at the time? Were you accompanying them or was it all chaperones?

I know how all consuming and absolutely brutal it can be and that’s just on the tiny scale we’ve experienced. I can’t even imagine experiencing success on that level. I salute you!

People related to the kids weren’t allowed to chaperone them. So they were strangers to the kids at first.

I coped by keeping myself busy!!! I didn’t have the heart to say no to them going, they would’ve hated me.

I don’t think this is jays mum, jay is successful on the west end in Hamilton on stage.

Edited

No, 5/8 of the members aren’t interested in a reunion. Including my child.

Did all the girls marry footballers? Does anyone else find that weird.

Rochelle didn’t 🤷🏻‍♀️

Shoes232 · 02/05/2025 20:27

I’m guessing Stacey’s mum as she’s been on X factor trying to re launch a singing career.

HundredPercentUnsure · 02/05/2025 20:27

What's the point of the thread? Why did you start it?

Yes. All the children that got in (and the B team of kids- there were reserve children incase any dropped out in the first couple of weeks) had some sort of part or full time stage school experience and/or lead roles in their school plays. The auditions were open to anyone regardless of this and lots of parents complained that it wasn’t fair that ‘experienced’ kids were the only ones who got in.

there were actually 9 members at first and one got removed, but in such a late stage of rehearsals that he wasn’t replaced and they went ahead with just 8.

How old was your child? Do you feel they were well No supported during g their time in the band, ir do you feel they were exploited? Why weren’t parents allowed ?

Not really. Simon Fuller saw most of it I think. I gave my child quite a lot of free rein with their money at the time although we put some aside in a high interest account. They used it to buy a car for their seventeenth.

there is the odd royalty but not much. Less than a couple hundred a year.

I don’t think this is jays mum, jay is successful on the west end in Hamilton on stage.

He was a good Aaron burr and the strongest male cast member when I went to see it.

His male cast mates are abysmal.
Current Hamilton (Alex Sawyer) is especially bad but it was close run thing between him and the guy who plays lafayette / jefferson (Lemuel Knights)

Acc0untant · 02/05/2025 20:32

Assuming Calvin's mum.

He has a business supporting emerging artists. So, sort of in the business behind the scenes.

MaRhodes · 02/05/2025 20:32

I always wondered as a kid if they were bullied at school.
How did the other kids react at the time?

Prettypennies · 02/05/2025 20:33

Did they earn much? Did Simon take a big cut? I know there was controversy around Sclub’s pay (the interview with fringeless Claudia Winkleman!)

BeEagerEagle · 02/05/2025 20:34

Gundogday · 02/05/2025 20:30

As I say some of the kids based in London did stay with their parents when they were recording or filming nearby, but all the parents had jobs of their own and some had other kids to care for so it was not feasible for them to follow them round the UK on tour.

all the chaperones had also been CRB checked fully whereas not all the parents had.

the chaperones supported them but I do feel there was quite a bit of jealousy in the band (some
parents inc myself got annoyed their kids didn’t have many lines in songs) not to mention the shock when they got dropped. There wasn’t enough mental health support for such a drastic change of entering the band and then getting dropped.

I was a huge fan of s club juniors as was the same age and loved the documentary they made about finding the band.

How often was your daughter able to call home? There weren’t the phones that we have now so imagine technology was more limited.

Mademetoxic · 02/05/2025 20:35

AHH I am younger than all the members. I remember them when I was in primary school.
I was their target age range.

There's a YouTube video of them singing live to One Step Closer, it sounds so good. Considering their ages at the time they sounded so good !
