My child was in a S Club Juniors, ask me anything

In 2001, my child auditioned for a CBBC show called ‘S Club Search’ and got a place in a child pop group who initially were meant to support S Club 7 on a one time support gig basis. This band was called S Club Juniors, later known as S Club 8.

The band ended up taking off and we basically had to sign or children away to Simon Fuller’s management to release a single. The kids were given tutors and chaperones, and spent most of their time in hotels (the ones London based stayed either their parents) or on the road. After that, they went on tour and I only saw my child once every couple of months. It was brutal but I knew that’s what they wanted to do.

they released two albums and the second one didn’t do that well, Simon Fuller tried them on a TV show called I Dream, however that also tanked. My child will admit that themselves. They all got dropped when aged 14-17. He said they had grown out of their roles a bit.

Now they are in their late thirties and trying to get back into the entertainment industry fully but it’s difficult. They’ve never quite got over their time in the band. They released music but it never really went anywhere. They would never say so, but it doesn’t help them that two of their fellow band members went on to become big stars, both were in a chart topping girl band and now are TV presenters.

their band (minus the two still-successful members) were meant to reunite for a TV show a long while ago, but for various reasons it didn’t happen. When S Club reunited, S Club juniors didn’t get asked to reunite as there was ‘no call’ for it and only a few were up for reuniting. (My child, and another boy and girl member)

they are still acquaintances with S club 7 and went to Paul Cattermoles funeral.

I know my (now adult) child doesn’t regret the choices they made as a child, but feels sad as an adult.

AMA- child (now adult) is also here to answer questions too and is happy to answer questions about specific members and music!

If everything in this is believable to you (and I didn't see anything that screamed fake) then enjoy it regardless.

Have a little think about why it is inappropriate to message people who were in a band that ended 20 years ago, who now have very different lives, who apparently/ probably aren't in contact with each other, to contact them to say hey, we were really enjoying all this gossip about your teenage years 20 years ago, can you just verify whether it's true? It's not a very nice thing to do really, is it? As you said, they're people too.

Posters didn’t think they were ‘reading gossip’ though, we were told that band members were somewhat involved with answering questions about themselves and had all consented to this and were sharing information too.

But now you know that might not be the case, do you think it's fair to basically poke the people it's been written about and say, hey, is this all true?

People asked certain questions because they wanted the gossip. In what other circumstances in life would it be okay asking if a 15 year old who you've never met had a crush on someone else where they were working?

This is making me enjoy the thread even more haha

I know! It was petering out a bit and now it's taken a new turn. Never usually read AMA threads. They are gold!

Discoswirl · 20/05/2025 21:53

What a plot twist 😂 This has got to go down in Mumsnet classics. The time we were duped by a fake SC8 mum.

As if Frankie and Rochelle were actually getting involved on the SC8 WhatsApp group haha

We so wanted it to be real that we couldn’t see the truth lol!

Have you not been here reading it all to or am I missing something? You’re just as invested if you’ve read it and know the contents? Maybe you don’t care if the the thread is true but some do? Same if I went to a live talk show and got home and got an email like yeah everything they said was fake aprils fool. It’s just annoying? As would people really invest time in a fake thread? So no it’s not to check if gossip is true it’s more so to check if people have wasted their time as it was really fun learning the insights in a band you loved growing up.

Kirbert2 · 20/05/2025 23:31

If an OP is legit, mumsnet will usually comment saying that they've checked it out. I think it is fairly obvious now that it wasn't legit.

Highly doubt it. If that was the case wouldn’t mumsnet have posted a little ‘we can confirm OP is who they say they are’ message.

The only one getting upset here is anon2022anon
I find it all hilarious

anon2022anon · 21/05/2025 06:26

@hayleyhyde I'm not upset. I'm absolutely baffled as to how people can be that invested in the lives of a band from 20 years ago, that they would consider private messaging them and adding them on private social media to find out if this is all true- when nothing in here needs verifying anyway!
If you really think that's okay, you need telling that you are strange and probably need more stuff going on in your actual life, if you have one. You know when people in the public eye talk about internet trolls? This type of shit is why. People thinking they have a right to know everything.

anon2022anon · 21/05/2025 06:29

But hey ho. Troll away. I hope you know that anyone you do message will you have you firmly in the nuts fan to avoid camp.

hayleyhyde · 21/05/2025 09:30

I think you’re forgetting the point here somebody quite possibly has come online and fraudulently pretended to be somebody’s MUM?? answering questions on their behalf. If I was in a band 20 years ago or 50 years ago and somebody was pretending to be my mum I’d want to know about the thread?? You’re trying to make out the reason we want to confirm it with a band member is to confirm the information is true and that we’re so desperate to confirm this is all true when quite honestly I am not that desperate to know it was just fun to ask. I quite happily could have lived not knowing? For me it’s it being morally wrong if it’s not real. We’re not nut fans? We’re grown adults considering letting them know there’s a real nut on mumsnet pretending to be their mum? Anyway I do have a life (professional dancer actually) so this is the last post I will deliver.
You’re completely missing the point of why people want to know if it’s real and it certainly isn’t desperation to find out what hotel a junior stayed in 20 years ago hahahah!

Somebody’s mum has been brought into it that’s the main issue here. My last reply anyway.

they never sed who’s mum they was I really think u need to calm down

anon2022anon · 21/05/2025 15:23

If someone else has done something stupid, it doesn't make it right for you to join in. It just adds to the stupid. And given you posted asking for recent pictures of them and reeled off which social media accounts you followed/ couldn't access earlier, it suggests you are at least a bit of a nut fan.

It might be someone's mum who's posted, it might be one of them looking for attention, it might be a randomer. It's well known that people pretend to be something they're not on the internet so it really shouldn't be a surprise to you that this could be fake.

Good luck with the professional dancing 👍🏻
