My child was in a S Club Juniors, ask me anything

In 2001, my child auditioned for a CBBC show called ‘S Club Search’ and got a place in a child pop group who initially were meant to support S Club 7 on a one time support gig basis. This band was called S Club Juniors, later known as S Club 8.

The band ended up taking off and we basically had to sign or children away to Simon Fuller’s management to release a single. The kids were given tutors and chaperones, and spent most of their time in hotels (the ones London based stayed either their parents) or on the road. After that, they went on tour and I only saw my child once every couple of months. It was brutal but I knew that’s what they wanted to do.

they released two albums and the second one didn’t do that well, Simon Fuller tried them on a TV show called I Dream, however that also tanked. My child will admit that themselves. They all got dropped when aged 14-17. He said they had grown out of their roles a bit.

Now they are in their late thirties and trying to get back into the entertainment industry fully but it’s difficult. They’ve never quite got over their time in the band. They released music but it never really went anywhere. They would never say so, but it doesn’t help them that two of their fellow band members went on to become big stars, both were in a chart topping girl band and now are TV presenters.

their band (minus the two still-successful members) were meant to reunite for a TV show a long while ago, but for various reasons it didn’t happen. When S Club reunited, S Club juniors didn’t get asked to reunite as there was ‘no call’ for it and only a few were up for reuniting. (My child, and another boy and girl member)

they are still acquaintances with S club 7 and went to Paul Cattermoles funeral.

I know my (now adult) child doesn’t regret the choices they made as a child, but feels sad as an adult.

AMA- child (now adult) is also here to answer questions too and is happy to answer questions about specific members and music!

How did you manage big family events and their birthday during this time? Did DC just miss out? Did it affect you?
I know teen DC can be tricky, but nanas 80th birthday or uncle Franks Wedding would still be important enough ... especially getting up to mischief with siblings and cousins!

Some kids went home for their birthdays depending on what day it was and whether they had a day ‘off’ otherwise they had to miss it.unfortunately that was just part and parcel
of being in the band.

there was the odd time one of the kids didn’t appear in a performance, it was very rare (I think it happened four times in four years) two of those times the members were unwell (one of those times a member was sick, another time a member had started her first period on stage and had to be ushered off and calmed down while the performance got re recorded- yes she is fine about me saying this) and two of the other times were funerals and the kid(s) got special
permission to go, however had to come back the next day to work.

Why do you think certain members got more lines and attention than others? Do you think it was personality, or looks, or that they were just more marketable in some way? They all seemed so talented!

ShillyShallySherbet · 02/05/2025 22:39

How did they all do in their exams?

It was agreed the Q&A was ok as long as spouses and kids and the obvious (ie personal info like contact info) wasn’t divulged. You aren’t obliged to ask anything

But why are a group of people in their mid to late thirties happy with someone’s mum discussing them on a random AMA on Mumsnet? That just seems really odd.

Ah I loved s club juniors back in the day

Saw Hamilton in the west end a while back and Jay from the band was an excellent Aaron Burr

Said person has since legally changed their name and uses a different one professionally too now.

During a 2021 public instagram live; other members of the band discussed this boy in detail. So it’s already public knowledge. Hope that helps.

So that would be Connor Daley then. Taken straight from Wikipedia.

Thank you so much @BeEagerEagle your openness regarding your childs past has been lovely to read. Hope their future is as good as their past! We are going through similar (not famous) so it has been a nice read. Good luck to you and your family xxxxxx

Frankie bless her had Simon Fuller’s attention from the get go at the auditions. It was obvious to everyone even the younger auditionees and parents standing right at the back. She was a talented pretty girl, good voice. He just really seemed to see a star in her.

He was also very keen on a girl called Lorna who didn’t make the band but was in a TV show with s club 8 later . He seemed totally enamoured with both (not in a creepy way) and I think everyone there knew Frankie would make it. Lorna only didn’t because of her age- she was 15 and deemed too old for the band.

Calvin struggled with dancing but I think Fuller knew girls would fall over their feet for him, he was a similar height to Frankie and they looked good together.

Girls wanted to be Frankie, and they loved Calvin, so he kept his ‘winning formula’.

I do think other people in the band sung better (not just my own child) but were maybe not as marketable as those two for whatever reason.

I'm not sure why you would even discuss any of this publicly but it was interesting to read

Yes, Connor however goes by a different name now. RE mentioning him, several members have already mentioned him on Instagram live.

They were never good enough and didn’t make it - literally never heard of them not sure what there is to ask?

feels like you are trying to somehow relaunch something that never was.

Yes, this!!
Not even sure what the point of the thread is...... a half baked attempt at trying to resurrect someone from the dead by giving them the recognition they never had?

Many of us on here are in the industry. Perhaps we should all use MN as a platform to publicise ourselves....

How did they all do in their exams?

One member did incredibly well however chose to not go to uni to study a “proper” subject ie maths or science, and their parents were furious. They were very upset but pursued entertainment anyway. They aren’t very close to their parents anymore.

RE the others, I’m not sure but afaik none went to uni.

mine did well in their exams however didn’t go to uni either

I agree. I don’t think a son would be as jealous of Rochelle and Frankie’s subsequent success.

It's clearly Calvin's mum and the people on this thread making nasty comments are the ones coming across jealous.

OP I think it's a great thread and your child did so well!

I'm sure it's a daughter

No the OP said way back it's her son she's posting about.

"a few people in school allegedly thought one of the male members (not mine) was very cocky and thought he was better than everyone. As an adult man he admits now that he was."

whynotwhatknot · 02/05/2025 22:56

its not surprising its about marketing look at spice girls geri got a good solo career even though she cant sing a note but was very charasmatic

sorry i was too old for s club juniors its an interesting thread though thanks

I don’t know enough about any of the members of the group to even hazard a guess as to exactly which child it is (I don’t even know their names!), I was just speculating on the sex of the child due to things she’d said 🤷🏻‍♀️

Enthusiasticcarrotgrower · 02/05/2025 23:02

I remember there was a girl in it called Daisy. I remember thinking at the time, because it was around the same time as Harry Potter was coming out ‘I wonder who’ll end up more famous: the SClub Juniors or the Harry Potter kids?’ I was a similar age to both. Time certainly made that clear.

SunnyViper · 02/05/2025 23:09

I don’t know any of the members of s club 8 so I’d say your child has little to be jealous of.

I think this is an Ill advised thread. It’s not hard to work out who your daughter is and it’s not respectful of her privacy, particularly as a trash ‘news’ site might pick it up.

OP said her child has consented to her posting this.

What makes you so sure her child is a girl? To me it's obvious which of the boys she's talking about.

If only one of you had got in would you still have joined? One of the members auditioned with her sister, the sister actually just brought her to keep her company. The sister didn’t get in but the girl in the band did. Sister was v upset.

If your son is Calvin please can you let him know that he was a source of a very heated row between 10 yr old me and my best friend as we both wanted to fancy him 😂

Just to say, not Calvin’s mum.
