As title! I’d love to be earning £500,000 or £870,001 but that’s life!

Op what do you do if something goes wrong with the house or car? I live similarly but dread anything going wrong as I just don't have the funds, only enough to get by and have used the credit card far too much as I needed an MOT/tyres ect.
Buying a house simply isn't an option and I doubt I could afford it if anything went wrong.
(Earn £1500 a month, no benefits, no maintenance, no savings/inheritance but HA property thankfully as cheaper rent and repairs done if needed and I'm completely on my own)

stayathomer · 23/03/2024 06:42

My dog is unemployed but doesn’t qualify for any help. So again, staying here for free.
Can he take in some ironing? Could he go pt?

edited to add or she op.

CrispsnDips · 23/03/2024 07:02

This is THE funniest post I have ever seen on here..thank u everyone 😂

@StarDolphins

I did ask him but he snapped at me & said I was nagging & nitpicking so I left it.

Did he fart as well?

We need carers, shop assistants, domestics, factory workers, refuge etc. A lot of whom are on minimum wage. I'm sure they would love to earn more to do those jobs but that's not an option. So we have a tax system that props up those essential workers wages because otherwise they would not be able to afford to live. (Although most can barely afford to with benefits ) And we are not an inhumane society (in theory) that think the poor should just fuck off and die plus as I said we need people to do those jobs for society to function.

Op I appreciate you are not on minimum wage I'm just reacting to the judgey comment.

And yes I know I've just made our benefit system sound like it's some fantastic service for the poor (if only!) but it amazes me the attitude around people on benefits.

Autienotnaughtie · 23/03/2024 07:17

The op owns her house because she worked hard from leaving school and was savvy.

She could be entitled to uc and child care but she is opting to support herself and her dd.

Northernsouloldies · 23/03/2024 07:18

Here's an Idea instead of tax credit propping up big business..they pay proper wages just like UC the more you have the less you get ...more the profit less propping up.

BrightHorizons24 · 23/03/2024 06:02

I think the OP's post is misleading because it doesn't state until further in to the thread that she has NO MORTGAGE and NO RENT to pay.
This is a bit mad - yet another thread about someone privileged.
I earn 3 x your salary in a professional career, slog my guts out for it, paid 37.5hrs a week but work 47.5 hrs a week with daily unpaid overtime which is expected in my job, and I have a mortgage to pay. Reading your breakdown of finances I think you are better off financially than I am.
You are incredibly vague about how you found yourself in the EXTREMELY PRIVILEGED position of having paid your mortgage off at such a young age. Saying ' I overpaid my mortgage and made a little bit from selling my 1st home, then made a little bit more from selling my 2nd home' is bollocks. You can't overpay your mortgage by that much each month that you end up mortgage free by your age - there is a cap on how much you are allowed to overpay each month. And you don't profit enough from 2 home sales to totally pay off your mortgage by this stage in your life.
There's BS going on.
Your income, given that you have no mortgage or rent to pay, is the equivalent of a much higher earner.
You are in, yet another, privileged position.
So don't bother being all sarcastic about other threads when you yourself are in a privileged position.
I'll be paying my mortgage off until I'm 68. It's the only way I could afford to buy a teeny tiny semi with box rooms and I earn 3 x what you do and work way more hours.
Lucky you to have no mortgage/rent which means you can have a terrific quality of life and an amazing work/life balance by only needing to work 20 hours a week.

Edited

You can't compare situations. I could say the same about my friends but we don't live in the same area, house prices vary, we aren't the same age.

Air fryer & no dishwasher!

Though I do have marigolds. Like, the proper branded ones, not the B&M ones.

Ah see… I was with you to start with but now you’re just showing off with the Marigolds 😁

I’m in a good position, not a privilidged one.

I have literally saved every single month since I was 15 - I did a paper round after school, then I worked in a shoe shop. I have never been out of work (albeit in low paid jobs bar one).

I have over paid on my mortgage, I was allowed to pay upto 10% extra with Nationwide ( & I did.

I remember as a child being at a hearing finalising our house being repossessed. I SAVE and live frugally, always have some.

My properties have been small & cheap too.

if have saved every single month for 34 years. And yes, each propert value has gone up.

I’ve thought about sending him out doing this but he’d fall asleep
on all the clothes & it would look bad on me.

He’s of retirement age now too so he’s missed the window of opportunity to contribute. He’s worked a blinder really🤣

I have savings. I try & walk where possible so it lowers my chance of repairs but my DD is repelled by walking so it’s tough!

You will probably have more outgoings than me so I know saving might not be possible.

I wonder if I’m older than you? I am 49 so have had lots of time to save.

He does. Also, burps. He picks his ear wax out then licks it off his claw🤣 I don’t know what job would be suitable given this.

The dog isn't even trying. He's disrespectful, abusive and leaving you got carry the full mental load singlehandedly. He could be a rescue dog, drug unit, cadaver dog, guard dog, entering crufts competitions or at very least a tok tok or instragram dog. There's huge demand for dogpics. Time for action or an ultimatum.

You need to get your ducks in a row, take a copy of his dog license while he's out of the house. Photocopy it and keep it in a safe place. Maybe consider getting a tracker for his collar to see who he's been sniffing around. Make him sleep outside.

It doesn't matter if you are stoney broke, every solicitor, easily found online, will give you a free consultation. If you get a free consultation off every practice, it's the equivalent for full legal representation, just take notes and represent yourself.

You need to do this before you become his full time carer in his old age.

Where do you go on holiday? If you had lots more money would you privately educate your DD/buy a horse? Are you saving for a specific reason?

I’m not a holiday person. I was never taken on holiday as a kid, I first went abroad at 18.

Since having my DD, I’ve forced myself so we go camping with my friends every year & this year we’re going to Majorca for 4 nights to join my friends - it’s a great opportunity as I don’t think I’m enough for her anymore & she needs other kids. It’s been SO expensive though but I’ve paid it over 1 year.

Despite my saving, I don’t actually want to be rich at all. Sounds strange but I just think I get comfort from saving every month. I wouldn’t buy a pony or send her to private school.

Oh God. Take my advice . WHatever you do don't buy a pony!!! I have one ( stupid citywoman moves to country , "I've always wanted a pony") . Country people laugh and sell you one for an extortinate price. You spend the next few years trying to catch the damn thing. They are evil incarnate. Buy a horse . They are lovely ( sorry OT)
Enjoy what sounds like a lovely life with your DD.
The cat though, once they start missing the litter box, things go downhill from there. Personally I think they do it on purpose just to prove what arrogant sods they are. Lock the catflap. It's the only way!!

Oblomov24 · 23/03/2024 08:19

Blimey, I only just got that there is no mortgage. That changes things. And if dd is at school, are you only working 20 hours. 4 hours per day, You could work 30, 9-3, 6 hours.

I choose to only 30 over 4 days but that's because I have a medical condition.

It's not a bit of fun.
OP earns £13,000 a year, pays no tax on that, and has no mortgage or rent to pay.

I did want it to be a bit of fun! I’m not actually complaining about anything, I’m happy with my lot.

MN has some funny people & this post has made me laugh.

Geez OP. Get her to walk down the median strip of the main road, surely that's quick. So lazy! She could pick up the shopping on the way home with her busking money.
