As title! I’d love to be earning £500,000 or £870,001 but that’s life!

I do get maintenance (less than the calculator suggests) but I don’t claim any benefits.

No child care now as my DD is at school. I live extremely frugally. I have also saved & done without so my wage covers what I need.

I own my house so no rent/mortgage. It’s a tiny house but it’s lovely nonetheless.

Is your lovely tiny house a kennel OP? Is DDog’s name on the deeds?

OP is a single mum and working as many hours as school-time allows. Why shouldn’t she be entitled to benefits?

And a lot of the super-high earners are just privileged mediocre people who just happened to be born into a life of going to the right schools and knowing the right people, and then use all the crafty loopholes to avoid paying taxes despite having WAY more than they need. 🤭

JobMatch3000 · 22/03/2024 23:23

How many cars does your dog have?

StarDolphins · 22/03/2024 23:23

mummybongo · 22/03/2024 23:15

Or if childcare is the issue, the dog needs to step up and take more responsibility for your child. Surely the dog should be doing more of the school pickups which would mean you can increase your hours?

I agree. He said he’s tired though & with his hobbies, doesn’t leave much time so I just do it!

I do have a cat too but again, but of a freeloader.

None. I drive him everywhere. Even to the groomers every 8 weeks. Never offers to contribute to fuel. I also pay for the food shop.

🤣 just him on the deeds.

I have asked to be on them too incase we part ways in the future & even said I want financial security but he said it’s best if it’s just his name & I left it.

Good on you. (Although ex partner should not be
let off the hook of supporting their child.) I would
love to be able to manage on that income, but unfortunately my rent alone (1 bed flat in SE) is more than your monthly income. Having no housing cost makes a huuuuggeee difference in the current climate. You didn’t mention the maintenance you do receive, but £1,300 pm plus maintenance but no housing cost, probably puts you above the average for the U.K Lucky you,

LawrieForShepherdsBoy · 22/03/2024 23:39

Oooh, 13,000 is my lucky number. How fortuitous.

Absolutely. I am very lucky to not have huge rent/mortgage costs. I would be homeless now & I’m so very grateful. I get £1088 wage, £250 maintenance & £96 child benefit & I feel like I have enough. I save £200 most months.

I know I’m very lucky & I feel really sorry for those paying extortionate housing costs.

Even some on £100k would like £13k( no tax paid, full benefits received on that!) as disposable income! And to only have to work 20h instead of 50-70 pw!!

StarDolphins · 22/03/2024 23:48

Just to be clear, I don’t receive any benefits bar the £96 child benefit.

And I’d put some money on it that the OPs job contributes to society

Serious question- do you socialise? Im in a very different financial situation and need to find inexpensive social activities!

Ive liked this post a lot!

So why did you think it appropriate to post this when you are probably more fortunate than the vast majority of mumsnetters? Aren’t you as out
of touch with the vast majority of people as the “I earn £ million/billion” posters??

mummybongo · 22/03/2024 23:54

Op that's a hell of a dripfeed - there's a cat freeloading off you as well? I don't know how long that's been going on but I'd imagine you're now sorely aware of how LAZY those furry bastards are.

Before you all jump on me I know! NACALT! but the majority will spend 23 hours of the day lounging about your house doing absolutely fuck all cleaning, washing, cooking or, well anything Angrywhile eating you out of house and home and think they can win you over with the occasional mouse gift or shit on your pillow.

Op this really has to stop, Ddog and Dcat are taking the piss. You need to get angry and strong, do it for your child if not for you!!

Love this thread- made me chuckle.
I'm being nosey OP-
How did you get to own your own home?
Did you previously have a high paid job?
Would you change jobs/ increase hours for more money?
What qualifications do you have?
What job do you do? Or is it too outing?!

🤣 absolutely. She takes the piss more than the dog. At least the dog contributes love & gratitude in place of financial contribution. cat just sleeps, eats dreamies , shots outside the litter box & THATS it!

I don’t have any qualifications apart from GCSE’s. I had a high paid job from 18-24(ish) but only because I hammered OT - I worked in a call centre where sat/sun was double time in those days! I saved most of it. Alongside saving, I overpaid my mortgage each month on my first flat & made a bit when I sold it then made a bit more when I sold my last house.

I don’t want to change jobs or do more hours currently as I have to do all drop off/pick ups so my hours are school hours.

My job is an admin job wfh. I want to change jobs in future so not working from home & when I DD is older I will work more hours.
