Hello, I'm a TRA - ask me anything

1000 replies

AlphaTransWoman · 14/10/2023 22:25

Good evening,

I'm a transgender rights advocate. I say "advocate" rather than "activist" because I believe in constructive debate and consensus building rather than the hostile, shouty kind of activism that gets us nowhere.

I am here because I am genuinely interested in seeing if there is some kind of compromise that can be reached between pro trans and gender critical views. Obviously this is difficult because we may disagree about something pretty fundamental. I feel passionately that trans women are women (at least in the psychological and social sense), so there's an obvious divide if you do not.

The question is, can we find ways to co-exist and find an acceptable way forward on some of the difficult issues that arise around trans acceptance? So I'm happy to have a go answering anything you care to ask in good faith. Who knows, we might even make some progress.

Let’s be fair to him @Circumferences - he’s met ones with nice blouses, soft skin and sets of breasts.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 17/10/2023 22:10

I always try to act in a way that I feel is appropriate for a woman.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 17/10/2023 22:22

So which bits of my statement do you disagree with? That women's skills are valuable in senior roles in the workplace or that carers are undervalued by society?

Sigh. I'm pretty sure that most of us disagree with the phrase 'women's skills' altogether. And the nonsense about 'behaving in ways that are appropriate for a woman', whatever the hell that means. Tell us - what kinds of behaviour are appropriate for a woman and not for a man? Or vice versa?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 17/10/2023 22:25

No, I'm still here. My pronouns are she/her by the way.

Funny how you think you get to choose how we refer to you, when you constantly ignore our objections to how you talk about women.

AlphaTransWoman · 17/10/2023 22:28

@AllProperTeaIsTheft

To be fair, many of you keep asking me what I think the difference is between men and women. All I'm doing is trying to answer this to the best of my knowledge and ability.

You might need to hand your badge in then.

Cos you don't sound very nurturing at all.

Unless you include nurturing your own ego.

EweCee · 17/10/2023 22:50

We’ve repeatedly told you about our lived experiences where women are repressed, discriminated against and sexually assaulted due to gender stereotypes and sex based physiology - each time you ignore those comments and keep asking for us to say why we don’t agree with your views on the ‘benefits’ of being a woman that you now so enjoy. You are not listening or engaging with our experiences - clearly demonstrating that you are not a woman.

It upsets me greatly when women are harmed. I want to live in a world where every woman is treated with kindness and her physical and emotional needs are cared for.

I'm really happy this thread has happened.

Normal TRA be like:

Just watched the first one.

These people are absolutely, utterly, fucking unhinged.

Women don't have penises!

Even murderers and abusers?

Zzizzisnotzeproblem · 17/10/2023 23:03

AMA, AMA, ok then.

When was the last situation you changed your behaviour to avoid the possibility of being raped?

WallaceinAnderland · 17/10/2023 23:03

Yup

AFieldGuideToTrees · 17/10/2023 23:01

Yes. They might need to be held in a secure location, perhaps indefinitely, but the aim should always be care and rehabilitation rather than punishment. Most likely a woman committing such crimes is suffering from severe mental health issues which would need to be addressed.

Yes, and your answers are basically the sexist stereotypical bullshit women have been fighting for centuries. And yet you wonder why women aren't rolling over to accept you in their spaces.

And women don't need to be "treated with kindness" and our "needs cared for". We're not fucking puppies.

Never, but I've changed my behaviour, travel plans etc, on many occasions to avoid getting beaten up by random thugs.

You're not a woman, then. Because all women have done this.

I've got a question for you. Do you think you have learnt anything from this thread, and if so what?

I think the main take away for me is just how hostile some women are to the idea of gender stereotypes, even if those stereotypes are on the face of it favourable to women - eg "women are kind", "women are co-operative" etc.

I need to reflect on why this is so and why some women strongly reject an idea of what "womanhood" means that I have such a strong emotional attachment to. So, food for thought.

Our "idea" of womanhood is FACT. Not an idea.
It is what we have LIVED.

Yours is fantasy. A childish fantasy.
