I'm a wedding registrar working across several boroughs. Summer is peak wedding time but we've been busy since coming out of lockdown. I've seen every type of wedding and behaviour you can imagine. Here to help with any questions! AMA!

Hi,
I gave notice of marriage. I never changed my name legally so brought all my documents birth certificate provisional ect. They ask if I was known by any other names I presumed they meant just legally known by names but after googling it can mean other names your known. To friends ect and when I was at school I used my mums surname but never officially changed it to this. Is this going to be a problem I did ring registration service and the receptionist said that would be fine. I am not known legally anywhere as my mums surname and never changed legally? Did notice my daughters birth certificate says OTHERWISE known as with my mums surname so I’m confused what I should do?

It's names you are legally known by (what's on your legal records like passport) OR if your name is (for example rosemary Anne smith) but everyone knows you by Anne your middle name, instead of Rosemary your first name, OR if you have a (for example) a Chinese name but you have adopted an English name. Just bring all your papers.

I’ve already given notice of marriage taken all documents in ect so birth certificate, drivers licence bank statement. I have no documents what so ever in my mums surname some people just call me by that because I used it at school but it’s never legally being changed. And all documents I use is my birth name. Will this cause any problems or should that be ok? I thought when they said known by names they just meant legally known by names?

I was pushed into a pool the night before my wedding. I broke my ankle in 3 places and needed surgery. Due to swelling they couldn't operate for a few days and as it was a location wedding i felt we couldn't cancel it that and we would have lost allot of money!

We were married by celebrant

A wheelchair. I always wonder to this day if we should have been married and how that could even be legal. I dont remember much of it at all.

A year later we renewed our vows as I wanted the wedding I had dreamed off and not one in a wheelchair that I didn't remember. I had a miscarriage on the day of the vow renewal and spent the day in tears and heart broken.

We are now separated and I have always had the feeling the whole marriage was jinxed!!!

Apologies if this has already been asked, but I can't find anything online about this specifically. If I marry in the future I'd really like to keep my name, but would my title change to Mrs? If so would I need to do anything? How does this work when brides keep their names please?

No you don't have to change your name, and you don't have to be a Mrs if you don't want to. The changing of the name is something you do AFTER the ceremony and via deed poll, and nothing to do with the ceremony itself. Many registrars won't say 'congratulations mr and mrs' as we don't assume you will be changing your title, we are more likely to say 'the newly married couple' which is more generic.

Depends where your marriage took place and if you were issued with a marriage certificate/license. In the uk a celebrant is not legally able to marry you. In other countries, I couldn't say.
