When the fashion shows happen, what's the purpose of the very unusual items ? As in General public it's unlike they would ever be worn,.so it's like why do designers design them ?
Hawkins001 · 11/04/2022 22:53

That may be a daft question, but it always puzzled me as to why the very unusual, designs and styles of outfits etc

frillseeking · 11/04/2022 23:51

@FlosCampi

Please could you suggest some casual outfits for an hourglass? 5'4, veer between 12-16 but same basic shape. I have a high rise and short legs. Smart is sooo much easier with pencil skirts, shirt dresses etc, but as soon as i lose waist emphasis i look like an oxo cube in a sweatshirt!

As you've said, you need to make sure you wear something with shape. Although casual by definition tends to mean more slouchy and oversized, you can still work a fitted look into your casual look. Simple things like tucking your top into your jeans to emphasise your waist such as the cardigan in the first image. Although the outfit is casual, it has structure and shape to it.

Another look is to wear a cropped jacket to define your silhouette paired with a casual tee and jeans.

You can also wear fitted shapes like a shirt dress but in a relaxed fabric. This dress has an elasticated waist which will highlight the area.

Oh OP you are back! Your last thread was so helpful. What's your favourite spring summer outfit for someone petite and pear shape who doesn't like the current vogue for short trousers?

user1477249785 · 12/04/2022 00:32

And can I also ask where in the country you work? You clearly really have an eye for this. I occasionally use a personal shopper and im wondering if you are anywhere near me?

@ThePennyJustDropped

I'd love some help with jeans please.

I'm 40, size 14 & 5'7 but all my height is in my upper body so I have stumpy tree trunk legs. I have a decent bust and defined waist. Flattish tummy. Very flat bum but quite wide hips. I look ok ish skinnies but very conscious they're not cool any more. And while as an older woman cool doesn't need to be my aim I don't want to look dated. But when I try the styles that look amazing on younger slimmer leggier women I just look dreadful and with a bum that seems a mile wide. Any suggestions?

In all honesty, I wouldn't chase the trends too much when it comes to denim. If you've found a shape that works for your figure, you can make it current through the way you style your overall look. There are so many different shapes out there now that there is room for them all- gone are the days when we veered from the bootcut to the skinny with nothing else in between. That said, there are other styles that you might like to try.

Something like the Levi 312 would be a good option. A flattering straight leg cut (not too far from your skinny comfort zone) and made in a sculpting fabric which will flatter the bum. Small high pockets also help create a peachy bum effect.

I haven't tried these ones but they look good

Ooh I'd love some help if you can squeeze me in please!

I've seen a personal shopper the rings atty John lewis and whilst I'm convinced in the shop, in the cold light of day when testing the clothes at home I always dislike who they turn me into and return.

I'm a 5ft 5 early 40s with J cup boots. Rounded tum, long body, good but short legs.

I like things with a vaguely rock or retro edge, everything seems to be floral or spotty and l much prefer plain or small get prints.

I like blues and metallics, avoid all pastels except the occasional light grey.

I'd love some ideas for how to update my wardrobe. J L put me in lots of ankle length shapeless dresses last time and they felt very aging for me.

I'm based in Hertfordshire/ Essex so not sure if that's local to you but most of what I do now is virtual styling sessions so drop me a DM if that's of interest to you

Would be very grateful for some help

Wow just saw this thread! I’m getting married soon and worried about being cold at night. What would be good as a cover up (prefer something I can wear again so not too bridal). Not fussed if it’s casual as photographer will be gone lol. I’m 5” size 10.

I've a new job where trainers are a no go. My feet are a wide 40 and I'd prefer something flat but def not brogues as look too masculine with my 6ft height and clothing style. What shoes would you recommend ?

LittleSnakes · 12/04/2022 07:57

Hi. Just wanted to say that I was very judgey before about personal stylists. Didn’t really get it. But then my friend got one and she always looks amazing now! Not that she didn’t before but she just looks even more ace. And your thread really chooses some nice things for people.

So here’s my question, now I’m enlightened as to what you actually do! I’m 5’3” and slim. Size 8/34. I’m currently updating my wardrobe to nicer jeans, tops and jumpers. I’ve discovered Vinted. Fine for day to day wear. But any suggestions of clothes that are a bit more interesting than jeans and a jumper? I do not like frills, slogans, anything too girly or froofy. I do like skirts, dresses, trousers, shirts (if I can be bothered to iron them). Pref natural materials. I like strong colour and stripes but not really floral patterns. I have little kids so has to be practical / no dangly sleeves that get in the way when I’m making dinner. Thanks!

I'd go for flats with feminine details and steer towards a pointed toe. If you're buying from a wife for range, you shouldn't find them to be too narrow. Have a look at asos, they have a huge wide fit selection and cover this area really well. I haven't tried Vivaia personally but they get excellent reviews for wide fit so they might be worth a look

Not daft at all! Very good question and there are various reasons. The main one being that the catwalk is the designers platform to showcase their creative talent and an opportunity to display their technical skill, hence why the designs are much more dramatic and flamboyant than anything that would make it to the commercial collection. It also gives them a chance to gauge a reaction to the trends that might seem crazy initially but will eventually filter down in 2 or 3 seasons time and it also garners quite a lot of publicity so that can be a factor!

Wow how exciting, what a great opportunity to glam up! It depends how formal you intend to go but I've found a couple of different options for you. The outnet is great for designer dresses at reduced prices and there are lots of gowns on offer.

www.self-portrait.com/products/black-dot-mesh-midi-dress self portrait do stunning evening wear dresses and are well worth a look

www.sosandar.com/navy-gold-lurex-spot-bardot-midi-dress love this dress. With an up do, gold heels and some delicate gold accessories this could look knock out

I’m 4ft10” very slim/scrawny size 4-6 small waist & hips but 30e chest finding it very difficult to find clothing that fits as sizing appears to be coming up so much bigger (I have some 20 year old French connection dresses that are a size 8 which fit beautifully) I’m 62 haven’t bought anything for so long as it’s such a mission.
Usually wear Topshop jeans/tops & trainers
Thank you

Hi, great thread ☺️

Any ideas for a 30yo, 5ft7 size 14uk female - currently 11wks pregnant. My body has always been hourglass and I carry excess weight quite well however, now that a bump is about to take over my usually slim stomach/waist area, I'm totally lost! Looking for some nice maternity styles for everyday wear. Also searching for holiday clothes as have one planned for Greece in June. Thanks x
