@frillseeking thank you for the link to the Boden jacket, I actually have that one! It's ok but very straight up and down. What I'm really after is something more like a traditional Austrian boiled wool jacket but with a waist! So shorter and Dame shaped rather than fridge shaped.
I'm loving this thread, so many amazing suggestions, thank you!

@Alabamahammer
My go to style is jeans tshirt and trainers, but I just feel like I look so frumpy and mumsy. I'm 5ft 4, 11 and a size 14, I pretty much have no waist and a really flat bum! If I ever try and wear anything high waisted or like jeans that are supposed to give you a better shape I just can't breathe!
I'd like to look a bit more "grown up" and not like a mum who's dressing like a teenager... Oh one more thing, we're a bit strapped for cash so needs to be on a budget. Thanks in advance.
River island do a great pair of mid rise bum sculpt jeans https://www.riverisland.com/p/blue-molly-mid-rise-bum-sculpt-skinny-jeans-780812. Also check out the F&F at Tesco contour jeans and push up jeans for a less £ option.
Once you've got the jeans nailed, pair with a nice top for an easy every day look. Something like this would look great with jeans and a nice summer sandal. This kind of style is good for creating shape https://direct.asda.com/george/women/shirts-blouses/blue-floral-print-peplum-v-neck-blouse/GEM936039,default,pd.html?cgid=D1M1G20C4
Similarly, this M&S style which you could wear with light denim jeans and sandals or trainers for day time or dress up for evening or smarter occasions with black trousers and a heel https://www.marksandspencer.com/animal-print-puff-sleeve-peplum-top/p/clp60559444?intid=mobileappppdpshare
If you're up for wearing a dress, this is a great every day style www.matalan.co.uk/product/detail/s2897321_c211/green-floral-midi-tea-dress-green the waist seaming and elasticated back seam adds definition to the waist and the floaty bottom half creates shape to the bum and hips

Hello was wondering if you might to be able to help
I’m 4ft10” very slim/scrawny size 4-6 small waist & hips but 30e chest finding it very difficult to find clothing that fits as sizing appears to be coming up so much bigger (I have some 20 year old French connection dresses that are a size 8 which fit beautifully) I’m 62 haven’t bought anything for so long as it’s such a mission.
Usually wear Topshop jeans/tops & trainers
Thank you

I missed some of these messages as there was a bit of a flurry in the middle of the thread. I think the key is to look at shops who are notoriously on the smaller side. For example French brands such as Sandro and Maje feature the cropped, petite aesthetic heavily and start at a size 6 but they come up very small. Reiss have a dedicated petite range that starts at a size 4 and because their look is particularly tailored, you will find that the sizing is on the small side but pieces do sell out very quickly. And Other Stories also have a selection of styles in a size 4. Zara do XXS in some pieces and are notorious for being small. I'd also have a look at the Outnet as designer pieces tend to be on the small side as well. Is there anything particular you're looking for?

@ConfusedGin I've attached some ideas for you. The best shape for formal would be a straight leg. However, wide leg is also very good for your shape and you can get a subtle version, they don't all have to have masses of material in them. The belted style I've attached from New Look is a peg which is normally tapered but you can see this style is a relaxed peg which means the cut will be more generous. The M&S style is straight but has stretch which is also another thing to consider to help with fit but of course you don't want anything that clings too much as this will emphasise rather then enhance.
Hobbs do this bestselling straight leg style which is also available in petite:

Thanks frillseeking! I’ve name changed but you just posted for me. I love the linen trousers but might need a more practical colour. Also really like the bright blue shirt and the striped T shirt. I’ve just bought a leather jacket so that’s handy.
