I’m a fairly secular Muslim: Ask me anything

I probably won’t know the answer but I’ll try

What’s a secular Muslim?

LolaSmiles · 11/11/2020 21:41

I'm guessing someone with a Muslik background and who might engage in cultural elements of Islam without having a devout personal faith.

It's a bit like people who say they're Catholic but only do some of the traditions without weekly worship, or someone who is culturally Jewish but doesn't go to synagogue regularly.

Byemelania · 11/11/2020 21:43

@LolaSmiles yes. That’s about it

What's your motive in posting here, and why the FWR section in particular?

Apileofballyhoo · 11/11/2020 21:49

Why aren't you religious, OP?

HecatesCats · 11/11/2020 21:51

Hi Bye, out of interest are you American?

The8thMonth · 11/11/2020 21:53

Why don't more liberal Muslims publicly denounce the extreme beliefs and terrorism actions done in the name of Islam?

ArabellaScott · 11/11/2020 21:53

Shouldn't this go in the AMA section?

Nomnomarrgh · 11/11/2020 22:04

@The8thMonth they do

grassisjeweled · 11/11/2020 22:06

What's your take on FGM?

Byemelania · 11/11/2020 22:07

@Kantastic you sound like a cop. My motive is I didn’t know where else to post it

OP posts:
Byemelania · 11/11/2020 22:09

@Apileofballyhoo it’s too much hard work and draining. I guess organised religion is problematic, any kind of state influence on prayer is strange.

ArabellaScott · 11/11/2020 22:09

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/AMA Here you go, OP.

Byemelania · 11/11/2020 22:09

@HecatesCats no but I’ll miss Melania nevertheless

Thanks for replying. We don't have cops here, I wonder why you used that word to describe the police?

Byemelania · 11/11/2020 22:11

@The8thMonth because we don’t see it as our job to denounce the actions of some idiots. Why don’t all white people denounce slavery? Colonialism? They might now and then but they get tetchy when the subject comes up - it wasn’t us! It was our ancestors. Well Muslims aren’t a monolith and a minority of lunatics aren’t worth our breath.

Byemelania · 11/11/2020 22:12

@ArabellaScott thanks - should I move this thread?

OP posts:
Byemelania · 11/11/2020 22:12

@grassisjeweled it’s obviously sickening.

It's definitely a better fit for your thread

Byemelania · 11/11/2020 22:13

@HecatesCats where is here?

Forgive me, I should have said in the UK. Where are you based, if you don't mind me asking.

theonlywayisup33 · 11/11/2020 22:14

Do you drink alcohol? Think that sex before marriage is ok?
How secular are you?

Also is your family of origin similarly secular?

FrenchtoEnglish · 11/11/2020 22:14

How would you feel if all religious symbols were banned in schools and public places? No wearing crucifixes, head coverings etc.?

Wonderrwall · 11/11/2020 22:15

Hi, thanks for sharing. How do your more religious friends and family feel about you being a more secular Muslim? Also, do you feel accepted in the country you are living in? Thanks x

Byemelania · 11/11/2020 22:15

@HecatesCats London. I used cops ironically. Now it has come to mean many things - cop, someone a bit spy-ie
