Off the back of another thread I thought I would put it up. So as the title says...I live in a tiny home! Ask me anything...

@CendrillonSings Yeah, not even room to swing a cat Grin I had to move quickly and needed the city centre location so wasn't spoiled for choice as even tiny places get snapped up. No room for even a sofa or tv, place looks like a bomb's hit it very quickly but can also be blitzed and look sparkly again in 20 mins.

tinyhouseliving · 29/04/2020 13:09

@Sparklfairy is that an actual flat or are you renting a room? Do you have a kitchen? When I was in uni I rented a room but we had a shared kitchen which was handy!

@tinyhouseliving it's a studio, so a flat with bathroom and kitchen, kitchen and 'living area' (bedroom!) open plan together.

tinyhouseliving · 29/04/2020 13:20

@Sparklfairy that's cute, I would do that to if it was just me tbh. I think fitting 4 of us into a 400sq ft is probably the most I could fit in that space. I often say to my doh that it would be HUGE if it was just the two of us! 🤣

@tinyhouseliving it works for me (kind of!). If I go and stay with my DM for a few days in her 3 bedroom, 2 reception room house I don't know what to do with myself or which room to choose to sit in Grin This place is definitely only for one person though. I briefly dated someone who was sneakily trying to move in I think (lived with his parents), spent sooooo much time here even when I didn't invite him, and it was so claustrophobic Envy

Bunowen81 · 29/04/2020 20:32

Two questions OP:

How do you manage when you have visitors?
What websites/FB pages/blogs would you recommend about small house living?

Scruffyoak · 29/04/2020 20:34

I am intrigued. We have a medium house but no land. I'd rather have small house and land. I absolutely hate big houses and it just does nothing for me at all...

tinyhouseliving · 29/04/2020 21:03

@Bunowen81

If we have one or two then it's actually not that cramped...more than that and we sit outside if the weather is nice...but we would have loads of ppl over at once obviously.

I am a member of a few specificity Irish cottage groups but also there is another Facebook group called "tiny house concepts" and another one called "minimalist small home and rv living" (which is US based but still informative.

I just googled small traditional Irish Cottages. They look amazing. I live rural(ish) in Scotland but in nothing as nice as this. I would love something like you have.
I totally take my hat off to you. It must make you really appreciate the land around you. Do you find you use your outside space much more than you would?

tinyhouseliving · 02/05/2020 16:33

@Breathmiller yes we are nearly always outside...there's a lot to get on with in the garden so we're kept busy. The dc are always building dens, climbing trees and helping out.

I don’t really want to ask anything but I totally agree downsizing is a very positive experience. Living in an easy to clean house without a mortgage reduces so much life stress. I feel that we are sold a lie that bigger is better. Secure is better.

Breathmiller · 02/05/2020 18:12

That sounds an idyllic childhood tinyhouseliving

Breathmiller · 02/05/2020 18:22

Do you think it will stay in it, after your children have left?
It will seem huge then Smile

Breathmiller · 02/05/2020 18:23

you will stay in it.....

BeautifulCherryBlossom · 02/05/2020 21:22

Are your children tidy? When it's wet do you find it claustrophobic?

I used to feel very on top of one another in my old house. Much prefer my bigger house. But each to their own, I understand about the cleaning aspect!

tinyhouseliving · 02/05/2020 21:33

@BeautifulCherryBlossom not really 🤣 but I don't badger them until it's time to go to bed and then they have to tidy first but I will help out because it's easier to help. They have a lot of toys outside that go in the shed, they need to be tidied before they come in too. But again it's easier if I help out a tad.

@Breathmiller we will extend as they get older and I have no intentions of moving ever again, we have moved a good bit including moving country so I'm done on that front for sure!

@Ritasueandbobtoo9 ah thank you...this whole Coronavirus situation has really made me realise that we made the right decision. We haven't had as many worries about bills etc as we would have if we had stayed in our previous property

OP posts:
Flupibass · 02/05/2020 22:04

As you grow veges etc. how do you manage to store your produce without a freezer?

Dutchesss · 02/05/2020 22:19

Why do you think anyone would be interested in the size of your home?
Why did you read the thread if you weren't interested? Wink

tinyhouseliving · 02/05/2020 22:26

@Flupibass I make jams, sauces and pickles with some things. And I "bottle" some fruits. We don't grow loads...enough for us and if I have extra I give it to neighbours, family and friends. But I mainly use/eat whatever needs to be eaten in season. As we grow seasonal veg. But...I will admit there has been a few times I have thought a freezer would be handy (like now 🤣) so it might happen.

OP posts:
dodolally · 24/05/2020 14:37

How much did it cost you OP?

dodolally · 24/05/2020 14:41

Scrap that I see it.

starbody · 12/12/2020 18:57

Hi there, @tinyhouseliving
Congratulations for living in your tiny house.

Did you have to obtain planning permission to live in your tiny house?
What are your monthly outgoings for heating/off grid electric supply etc?
Did you have any issue finding insurance for your house?

We are in the UK but feel as if there might be issues trying to stay semi-rurally and not having the house as an outhouse on someone's garden property. To be completely off grid is our ideal, just beginning to research our options right now in Scotland!

Thank you

Splodgetastic · 12/12/2020 19:10

I think Irish houses are much bigger generally. I was shocked when I went to Dublin for the first time at the size of the average bog-standard semi.

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 13/12/2020 16:07

We would really like to down size within 5 years. But how do you accommodate people on occasion? My only reluctance is where to put your children and their developing families as they arise!

TerrifiedandWorried · 13/12/2020 16:37

We have just measured ours and had a loud discussion about who is right about the size. 16ft x 24ft. 2 floors. Added an extension of 130 square feet and my house should feel huge. Why doesn't it???
