Off the back of another thread I thought I would put it up. So as the title says...I live in a tiny home! Ask me anything...

@CanICelebrate my rule is "one in, one out"
I have a paper storage box for important documents, I don't get any paper bills anymore so we don't have that to contend with!
Shoes- my dc have wellies and a pair of trainers for school. That is it! A pair of sandals in the summer and boots for the winter for dd. Their school doesn't require school shoes. Wellies are kept on the outside on a rack similar to the one in the picture. The rest are in their bedroom in a basket under the bed.
Coats- they have two each, a school one and a messy play one! If wet they are hung up inside the front door and when dry they go in their wardrobe.
Books- in a box under their bed and each of them has a shelf by their bed with some on it too.
In terms of having a clear out I highly suggest Marie Kondo! I love to keep it simple too!!
I hope that helps.

@CanICelebrate we also adapted things like

  • we raised both beds to fit store things under them.
-We got tall units from ikea for the kitchen to store things -EVERYTHING has a place, it lives there and gets put back in its place.
  • dh built storage behind the toilet and we opted for an IKEA mirrored unit above the sink

Sorry I forgot to attach the welly storage rack

I bet it's lovely. My house is cosy too, nobody has ever got lost trying to find the loo :)

Pasghetti · 28/04/2020 15:12

I love the idea of tiny houses OP - following with interest.

Rebelwithallthecause · 28/04/2020 15:15

We also chose smaller cottage over large house

Grew up in huge house.

I wouldn’t want that level of upkeep or effort again.

We also have one in one out policy. Saves even more money that way and I don’t get tempted to just shop for thing’s unnecessarily as I wouldn’t have anywhere to put it

oohnicevase · 28/04/2020 15:26

I'm the opposite to you , I grew up in a huge house and live in a pretty big 4 bed detached but yearn for a big house in a field like how I grew up. I feel sad my kids haven't had the childhood I had but beside dh being a high earner he is sensible so had paid off the mortgage . I'm still working on him !

banivani · 28/04/2020 15:29

I converted 400 sq feet to sq metres and got just a little over 37 sq metres? Can that be correct? Because no way is that all those rooms! :O

tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 15:32

@Branleuse sorry I missed your post! Yes we spent A LOT of time outside, my dc love being outside building dens and climbing trees. And we are always gardening and sorting out our veggies/herbs and chickens.

Any chance of a pic of the floor plan? It sounds really nice.

Sparklingbrook · 28/04/2020 15:37

This is 400 square feet and very cute, but only one bedroom. I am just not sure I could live in it though.

Rebelwithallthecause · 28/04/2020 15:49

That floor plan includes the porch in the 400sq ft too!

tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 15:53

@banivani yep that's about it!

@Morgan12 see the rough pic I just drew up! It's awful and obvs not to scale but you get the idea.

The other rectangle in the front bedroom is our wardrobe

And in the back bedroom they have a tall chest of drawers and a Kallax unit.

I don’t know how you clean it in 20 mins though.

Carrie7469 · 28/04/2020 16:13

Why do you think anyone would be interested in the size of your home?

tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 16:16

@Lllot5 it probably takes less tbh. I clean as I go. But on a big clean day I can hoover, make the beds, dust/wipe down and mop in 20mins if I do it at speed. We don't have a lot of "stuff" lying around. The kids room probably has the most stuff but it all goes in boxes. They tidy as they go.

OP posts:
Fishcakey · 28/04/2020 16:18

It's normal sized. We don't all live in enormous houses don't you know!

tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 16:19

@Carrie7469...someone put up a post the other day about building a small home in their garden and others started taking about small homes. There is also a large "small home movement" at the moment so ppl are more interested than you would think. There's no need to be do rude about it...HmmConfused
And if you actually read the thread..there are plenty of ppl interested.

OP posts:
lekkerkroketje · 28/04/2020 16:24

It's funny how much things vary by region. That would count as enormous where I live, especially since you have attic storage and a garden, so really it's much bigger than 400! We have 300 sqft all in, no extra storage for 3 of us (one baby), and it's considered relatively luxurious. So luxurious that we even have dishwasher, washing machine and a proper freezer and oven.

I love how fast it is to clean. Not having space to buy crap means there's no crap to clean around!

tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 16:25

@Fishcakey I never said everyone did...again no need to be rude Confused

OP posts:
tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 16:29

@lekkerkroketje, we are very lucky with our storage and outside space. No dishwasher though. We have a small under counter fridge with no freezer. I don't freeze anything really.

OP posts:
sleepyhead · 28/04/2020 16:32

I get you with the cleaning - our old flat was a tiny bit bigger than yours, and one of the plus points was I could hoover the whole place without having to unplug the hoover Grin.

tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 16:41

@sleepyhead yes!! well I use the handheld dyson but I can do it all before I have to recharge! 🤣
