Off the back of another thread I thought I would put it up. So as the title says...I live in a tiny home! Ask me anything...

Good point. 400 or even 200sq meters is rather luxurious by comparison to square feet Grin

BasiliskStare · 28/04/2020 18:12

I live in a small house & two things - 1) there are 3 of us so just having own space but 2) more importantly for us - we have very very little storage space - had I a large or a shed etc that would make things easier.

But for us - it is just more a case not keeping things you do not need and I am trying ( I am not there yet) - a place for everything and everything in its place. But as my mother ( who has a bigger house then we do ) said - you can only sit in one chair at once. Grin

totallyyesno · 28/04/2020 18:12

I think you are OP!

Londonsuffolkmummy · 28/04/2020 18:13

Your measuring the ground floor footprint

Bluntness100 · 28/04/2020 18:18

I’m confused also.

If it’s 5m x 7 m that’s 17.5 square metres or 188 square feet. Which is smaller than most caravans.

tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 18:18

@totallyyesno you think I am what? Confused

fluffygreenmonsterhoody · 28/04/2020 18:24

5x7m is 35 sqm. So just under 500 sq feet. Which is what OP said.

fluffygreenmonsterhoody · 28/04/2020 18:25

Urgh. Just under 400 sq feet. We need an edit function for fat fingers.

tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 18:25

@Bluntness100 area = l x b so 5m x 7m =35m2
35m2 = approx 376 sq ft!

tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 18:28

And then I add on the store and bathroom as they are added on to that building so it's approx 400sq ft but it has thick walls so the inside measurements are actually smaller.

We have been a family of five in small flats as could never afford a house. I would KILL for a proper house where everyone had their own bedroom.

lekkerkroketje · 28/04/2020 18:35

Rebelwithallthecause, I'm in a big European city. I'm not sure what the official regulations are, but they don't really seem to care about children. Our flat has a double bed in a partitioned bedroom the same size as the bed and a high quality double sofa bed in the living room. Here, it wouldn't be uncommon to have 3 adults living like that legally, and several more illegally. Most of my childless colleagues live in 12-15m2 (130-160sqft) with their partners. There, you sleep on the sofa bed, you have a microwave and/or a single hot plate, and laundry is done at the laundrette or dry cleaners.

You just get used to it. We only have one pair of shoes at a time, and as many clothes as will fit in the cupboard. I'm always absolutely gobsmacked when I read on MN that people have 10 winter coats! We have one in, one out. You must waste so much money buying the extras! I still have room for skiing and sports kit and plenty of books. I can't imagine how much crap you must end up with in a 150m2 house

Viviennemary · 28/04/2020 18:36

Thanks for answering. I've got far too much stuff. And now charity shops shut can't even get rid of stuff.

crazybutkind · 28/04/2020 18:37

I live in a one bed cottage with DH DD and another on the way.

There is no bloody storage or room for anything other than absolute needs.

Anything we simply do not use is gone so clothes, cutlery, utensils, toys, cosmetics, shoes are all literally stuff we use daily.

It's incredibly difficult and it's open plan with no doors.

Bluntness100 · 28/04/2020 18:38

Sorry op you’re right, I was thinking of triangles!

Goslowlysideways · 28/04/2020 18:41

People who go on threads to argue are so dull.
‘That’s not small blah blah blah...’.
Don’t reply if you just want to be a know it all.

Thehollyandtheirony · 28/04/2020 18:42

Well I think it’s tiny! It sound very cosy though and amazing to have that much land. Do you find it makes you spend most of your time outside, whatever the weather?

carryoncoping · 28/04/2020 18:46

That's not tiny! Especially with an acre of land!!!!

Buxx · 28/04/2020 18:48

I've found my thread!! we are just about to do this too only ours is slightly bigger in that we have a separate kitchen and lean to which will become a bathroom, so not sure I can claim tiny house status Blush

We too will be mortgage free as my Dad is passing the property to us.

I can totally relate on the not wanting a big house. We used to have a large house with outbuildings and 2 gardens and the upkeep was relentless. There was always something that needed fixing, cleaning or mowing!! the heating bills were horrendous and it just felt like a massive burden all the time, both financially and mentally. Never again!

Our new cottage is by the seaside and has a lovely long garden but will be a doddle to maintain and I'm looking forward to getting stuck in (we have renovation work to do). Our plans are to potentially build a loft extension to add a 3rd bedroom and build a tiny house in the garden for our son when he is old enough.

If I knew then what I know now I would have been a lot less stressed overall!!

carryoncoping · 28/04/2020 18:48

Not being a know all reference above.

It's just having lived in a one room Studio with no outside space I think op is slightly deluded. I guess it feels small to her if she has downsized....

MitziK · 28/04/2020 18:51

*I’m surprised about people living with families of 4 in 200sq ft houses or flats.

It wouldn’t meet any kind of regulation and not be big enough for even a bedroom*

Legally, for council properties or when assessing number of bedrooms, as long as it's 7 foot by 7 foot, it's a bedroom and you can fit two adults who aren't related or married/in a relationship in it.

tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 18:52

@carryoncoping when you have to cut your beds down to fit a bedroom...cannot for a full size sofa and have 2m stretch of "kitchen " with a two ring hob...I would definitely say its on the smaller size. But I love it...

OP posts:
Frenchfancy · 28/04/2020 18:56

I would call that tiny - it's the size of my kitchen!

Do you bake/cook from scratch? How much kitchen equipment do you have?

emelsie · 28/04/2020 18:58

Why didn't you get something smaller than the huge house but bigger than what you have now , instead of going tiny and then have to adapt so much , cut bunk beds etc ?

Sunshineboo · 28/04/2020 19:03

Ooh I am really interested

We downsized to the property we have now. Had a 4 bed when hoping for kids, when they didn't come (and found out they wouldn't) we moved to a small two bed. I love everything about our cosy home (not as cosy as yours though)

Feels good to get rid of stuff that accumulates when lots of space
