Off the back of another thread I thought I would put it up. So as the title says...I live in a tiny home! Ask me anything...

It’s about the same size as my living room. I also think it’s tiny,

Op was there a financial or mental health crisis that caused the move?

paininthepoinsettia · 28/04/2020 19:09

It seems like one extreme to the other. I would worry about the fairness of choosing to live like this when the children are older. No personal space, no where to put a desk for studying etc. They might be happy in the garden for now but in 10 years time they won't. How much kitchen storage do you have?

Grasspigeons · 28/04/2020 19:13

What do you do with bikes and spare bedding

carnivalisover · 28/04/2020 19:15

MitziK

In your 200sq ft hypothetical house say you have 2 bedrooms 7x7, that is 98sq ft, which leaves you a room of 10x10 as livingroom/kitchen/bathroom.

The smallest space you can fit a shower room in is 5x5 (unless it is a caravan wet room where you just have a spray head and the loo & basin get wet...you could fit that in about 5x3).

So you are left with either 75 or 85 sq ft for living room and kitchen.

A basic kitchenette of sink cooker fridge and washing machine is 16sq ft. So, assuming you had a clear space in front of the run of units (3x8) you’d be left with 50 or 60 sq ft as living space.

Which is a 7x7 or 6x10 room.

Do-able but not compliant with UK building standards.

tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 19:20

@Frenchfancy yes I do I have clever storage under my oven and we have 1m tall IKEA units. I cook everything from scratch, I bake bread from time to time and cakes etc. I'm very organised.

@emelsie it was a the location and size of the land that drew us to it to be honest...and we do intend on extending as the children get older...

@Bluntness100 I'm going to be honest and say that I had enough of keeping up appearances as such. We wanted to live more simply and it couldn't be done where we were! We had a €900 mortgage per month and it sickened me so we upped and bought where we are now. Mortgage and stress free!

This sounds wonderful.

I love the Netflix series and the TinyHome podcast, but they are US based and are houses on wheels; I love the sound of yours

Run of units? Units?

Sink and undercounter fridge one side. Cooker the other. Full height Gas cupboard took up the rest of the wall - the washing machine was wedged in front of the sink and the doorway was 2'3" - you couldn't use the cooker or open the fridge door without shutting it - and the two would meet across the floor.

The 2'5" front door was interesting - especially as it couldn't open more than 90 degrees as there was another structure protruding into that wall - it came up from the ground floor cupboard marked electricity, so I presume it was that and the rising main.

On the positives, I managed to put lino in the entire hall and bathroom with an offcut from somebody doing their porch. Much nicer than concrete floors. And buying a 120 x 180cm rug covered the actual ''space' between the settee and two walls, leaving just enough space for the door to scrape open.

The 205cm high ceiling made changing bulbs easy, too.

My actual house now is 3.7m across. It's huge.

tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 19:32

@paininthepoinsettia as I have said up thread we will extend as they get older. They will get their own room each then. As of right now they are happy.

@Grasspigeons bikes, scooters and outdoor toys go in the shed
Spare bedding- each bed has two full sets they are stored under my bed as it's a lift up bed.

tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 19:41

@paininthepoinsettia you reminded me that I had this saved on our ikea account
This is our kitchen plan...the unit above the sink has a drainer and the unit above the job has the microwave in it. The rest is all storage. The space is where the fridge is.

Are the kids going to share a room until they are old enough to move out??

ivfbabymomma1 · 28/04/2020 19:43

Sorry @tinyhouseliving I didn't read the full thread! Ignore me lol

Theukisgreatt · 28/04/2020 19:48

How much did it cost? 900 euro a month for the huge house sounds very cheap..

totallyyesno · 28/04/2020 19:53

@totallyyesno you think I am what?
Sorry I was meant to be quoting a post about confusion between feet and metres!

Lardlizard · 28/04/2020 19:53

What do you spend all your money on now ? Do you take loads of holidays ?

ShowOfHands · 28/04/2020 19:56

Sounds fab op.

My friend built her own eco tiny home. She and her dp built it from straw and clay mostly, hand carved the interior woodwork, doors etc, built the bed and all storage etc, floor is mosaic and they did themselves. It looks exactly like a hobbit house. Tiny and beautiful. I have real house envy.

I couldn't do it though. Where would I put my books and jigsaws and unicycle and Lego and the houseplants and the bikes and the winter duvets and the cooking equipment and my Grandma's antique dresser and on and on and on. There's too much with which I couldn't part.

mizu · 28/04/2020 20:04

Ooh that is small. We (DH and 2 teen DDs) live in about 730 square ft. Usually ok but currently feeling small 😁

We have never lived in a big house - although I lived in a huge run down old house when I was young - and we have a decent size mortgage on it but we love it.

Well, I love it, less to clean and less clutter cos you just cant keep loads of stuff.
I love the idea of living even smaller with fewer belongings. Surely that's the future???!!! 😁

tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 20:06

@Theukisgreatt How much did the first house cost? We bought the land for that and had a large deposit.

Bingeslayer · 28/04/2020 20:07

Sounds bigger than mine,2 beds small bathroom ,small living room and small kitchen,no room for dining table,me and 2 DC.

tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 20:08

@lardlizard we have saved quite a chunk for retirement and university funds. And we have money aside for our eventual extension on the house. Yes, we go on holidays etc...but we're not lavish.

Bingeslayer · 28/04/2020 20:13

Should add,dds have a bedroom each,I currently sleep with youngest dd who's 7 as she doesn't like sleeping alone.when she's a bit older I'll sleep in living room, not ideal but all I can afford and I dread each new year as I worry rent will increase.

Marmunia1975 · 28/04/2020 20:14

We have a four bed detached and it's still not big enough for the three of us! Books, toys, computers, collectibles.....

longtimecomin · 28/04/2020 20:17

400sqft is tiny, I lived in a one bed which was 484sqft and felt that was pretty small. How on earth are there two bedrooms?

HelloItsmeAgain1 · 28/04/2020 20:22

How old are you and dp? How often do you need to go food shopping?

tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 20:30

We are late 30's. I do a weekly food shop.

tinyhouseliving · 28/04/2020 20:32

@longtimecomin I have attached a floor plan somewhere in the thread.
