Fuck all is processed by the pancreas-the pancreas is a gland and secretes enzymes and insulin etcHmm

Lougle · 16/12/2018 22:35

Ok, so this isn't doing the OP much good. Pain relief is commonly given for pancreatitis because it's excruciating, but it's not the only thing that is used the treat the pain because the pain caused by pancreatitis is complex, by definition of the fact that it's caused by bile acids essentially digesting the pancreas and causing huge inflammation.

If the drs think the OP is suffering from gallstones in the common bile duct then they'll be having to decide what to do about that. In the mean time, pain relief and sleep. Flowers

SimplySteve · 16/12/2018 22:35

They think the back pain is a kidney infection btw. Want a urine sample.

It's quite humorous really, studied medicine in my younger years then went into a tech career.

Sooveritg
So an overheard conversation while in pain?
That does not constitute medical knowledge.

nocoolnamesleft · 16/12/2018 22:35

Hasn't this got to do with the debate about the effect of opiates on the function of the Sphincter of Oddi?

Sooveritg · 16/12/2018 22:36

So 5 doctors were talking through their arses?

MummySharkDooDooDooDoo · 16/12/2018 22:36

Back to amusing hospital anecdotes. I was recently in an ultrasound waiting room and a woman, probably in her late 70s, came out from her appointment, snuck up on her husband of a similar age and shouted "Boo!" It was a highlight in my hours of waiting.

Lougle · 16/12/2018 22:36

Yes, but they've decided that there's not too much of an effect now, so if opiates are needed, they're needed.

SimplySteve · 16/12/2018 22:38

Haha, nurse just let me give myself the heparin shot. Brilliant! (Also incredibly outing).

I was on day 4 of starvation (dx pancreatitis) where I wasn't allowed food or even water. I knew I was getting very unwell, as I kept fainting, and I begged them for food. They wouldn't give it to me, as they 'rest the pancreas' and 'if we give you food, your pancreas will rupture'. Maybe process is the wrong word. But whenever you ingest something, the pancreas kicks in to do its job. And mine was apparently in such a state, they didn't want to risk anything being ingested. Even paracetamol. They also only give morphine when I was crying in pain. A lot of very worried heads, with surgeons and medical team consulting each other.
As it turned out, my blood sugar had dropped to 2.8, so they continued to deny me food (out of pain at this stage, on day 4) and gave me those horrible sachets of glucose to get my blood sugar levels up.

If anyone actually is a surgeon and corroborate my testimony, I'd be grateful!

elephantoverthehill · 16/12/2018 22:43

I wrapped one Christmas present today and did 3 loads of washing. I did some other stuff too.

feliciabirthgiver · 16/12/2018 22:44

Hi OP, just saying hi and we are here to keep you company, have also had pesky gallbladder and pancreatic conditions (oh so much worse than childbirth). Hope you get some lovely opiates soon and keep your chin up Thanks

redsummershoes · 16/12/2018 22:46

I figured out the bastard timer on the christmas tree.
what do you prefer, switching on and off or putting it on a timer?

SimplySteve · 16/12/2018 22:59

And a full biliary tree examination has been mooted, along with "dealing" with the SoO. Think that will be a discussion in the morning with the consultant surgeon team.

And yeah @nocoolnamesleft . I take tramadol anyway (which is considered baaaaad for biliary issues), so am going to try to get that changed for oxycodone in the NY as seen as showing the least biliary irritation.

MrsMoastyToasty · 16/12/2018 23:10

Is it anything like Holby?

lisalisa · 16/12/2018 23:11

I have had pancreatitis and did get pain relief ina and e . I was given tramadol - never again - I spent hours gripping the sides of that high trolley bed convinced I was going to fall out

SimplySteve · 16/12/2018 23:24

Yeah, tramadol is (unofficially) contraindicated in biliary issues.

Nothing like holby!

I've just been given a sedative, I don't cope in these kind of environs so I'll apologise now in case I just disappear!

OnlyJoking1 · 17/12/2018 00:44

Sounds like kidney stones need ruling out, have they done that?

Sooveritg · 17/12/2018 00:56

Aw bless you. I know it's so stressful. You poor thing. Hope the sedative gives you some sleep. It's awful being in hospital. I cry. And get very distressed. So I think they pick straws who has to deal with me. Because I vary between swearing at them, crying and refusing to deal with them and trying to discharge myself. I'm not a good patient and it's terribly distressing when you're alone and in pain.
Us lot are here if we're any use?

Sooveritg · 17/12/2018 00:58

I'm hoping your snoozing for a few hours, until they wake you again. We'll still be here in the morning. I know it's stressful. x

Sooveritg · 17/12/2018 01:01

I have pulled my cannula out of my arm once, as they kept trying to get me to wait. Just put a tissue on it, and pressed it and I was fine.

NOT SUGGESTING YOU DO THAT.

Just saying that I hate hospital too.

halfwitpicker · 17/12/2018 01:10

Sooveritg

^^

So what happened with the starvation on day 4? You did have pancreatis?

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/12/2018 01:11

I've done that too, back in June, I was in the lift at the time!
They discharged me the next day, but I was back in a month later, different ward, better admission, then an ok one in October/November.
Luckily last night was just overnight.
