What did you think of that 'gypsy' TV show a few years ago? Can't remember it's actual name sorry! Not the wedding one, the one about life in general as a Traveller.

Herja · 10/07/2018 15:16

I was brought up as a new age traveller. We were on the road full time until school age and then travelled mainly during holidays. Normally not longer than a few weeks in each area.

Do people still travel, or is it mainly permanent sites now?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/07/2018 15:18

Why are travellers so cruel to their animals? There must be some animal lovers amongst you surely.

Travellers get a bad name but I'm very confused. There's no way that the entire Traveller community are those who turn up an camp out at local fields and parks. So where do most Travellers live? Do you still move around a lot and how do you usually choose where to go?

As one of our local school has a lot of Traveller children, I assume that many don't move around? If that's the case, are you living in rented accommodation? And if so, what defines you as Traveller?

I'v heard that Traveller children are discouraged from having friends outside the community. is that true?

[I hope none of this is offensive. I'm not English and I simply don't understand the general negative feeling towards Travellers because while I do sympathise when a small group takes over a public space, that's a few families. It can't possibly be the entire community. So what don't I understand?]

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 10/07/2018 15:20

Are you a woman and if so, were you allowed to stay on in school to gcse level (or beyond?)

We have travellers constantly in our area. They break onto land by cutting open locked gates. They abuse local people and threaten to physically harm them. They empty their toilets in the fields leaving piles of shit and loo paper. They leave rubbish strewn everywhere and cut down trees. They drive around the neighbourhood looking into peoples houses and stealing from driveways. So the feeling towards them is one of hostility generally. I am not suggesting you do any of the above and it could be just a small minority that behave in this way but do you find hostility towards you? How do you feel about that?

tbh i dont know where you get this from?
everyone i know is ok with animals? actually theres woman who lives on the same site that has like 15 dogs and about 20 chickens! her daughter wont let her in the trailer with her dogs so she sleeps in the shed rather than leave her dogs by them selfs

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 10/07/2018 15:30

I’ve never understood this thing about travellers leaving crap everywhere. (Which of course isn’t all travellers at all!) Have you seen the state some settled people leave their homes, gardens, streets, parks, schools, public areas? Honestly there are dirty fuckers all through society. There are thieves all through society, there are animal abusers all through society.

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 15:30

alot is in houses now and iust travel in the summer
i live in a private site in leeds and just got back from travelling last monthGrin but even if i didnt travel as a lot dont now id still be a traveller - traveller is just the irish version of gypsy only really us call us travellers non travellers just call us gypsys
i suppose every one is dofferant but most would say not to mix with non travellers as non travellers generally know alot more than our children - not to sound bad Blush but we dont let our girls no anything about sex we dont let them hear any dirty language and also alot of the time they get bullied

Are you obsessed with cleaning?

neddle · 10/07/2018 15:33

Why do you travel? Do you get bored with living in one place for too long or is it something else?

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 15:34

In my area (south east england) one friend has rescued an abused horse from travellers - who made her pay for it, and another friend rescues abused dogs, mainly lurchers who I’ve seen with my own eyes and have been horrifically abused. Many are shut down after their experiences.

It’s great if it doesn’t happen within your community, but I do have first hand knowledge of it happening elsewhere.

I think you’re brave starting this thread btw, and it would be good to have insight into an insular group of people.
