Why then did you say you would be doing the tutoring upthread?

Is that what others do... hire in tutors?

SPOFS · 10/07/2018 17:32

Op, don't you think it's a bit unfair that you are already planning on what you will tell your adult daughter to do? Once your daughter is 18, she can do as she likes. She can go to uni, get a girlfriend, work in McDonalds, travel Thailand, anything she likes really!

Don't you think you may be setting yourself up for failure and rejection by planning out a life she may not want or choose?

Caribbeanyesplease · 10/07/2018 17:32

is the private tutor so that your children don't have to go to school and mix with non traveller children?

This and perhaps a strong skepticism about the benefit of education?

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 17:33

in school they teach children sex ed and the children know more that we dont want ours to know thats the reason for the girls and the boys go to work at 10/11 and yes thats what others do hire turors

Will the tutor also be a traveler? What kind of person do you want tutoring your children?

SPOFS · 10/07/2018 17:34

Also, you can opt out of sex Ed in schools. Smile

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 17:34

spofs this is our way and our culture and always has been

Bellabutterfly2016 · 10/07/2018 17:34

This might sound a daft question but if you have a kind of permanent "settled" site, why do people still tour round to stay at other sites?

The ones round here seem to be just empty feels/carpark/open spaces so not like there's friends there or anything;

If your husbands have businesses is this difficult for them not being in one place?

pallisers · 10/07/2018 17:34

have to say, OP, I'm glad you are happy in your life but you aren't selling it to me at all.

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 17:35

spofs it will just be a normal tutor i highly doubt it will be a traveller and also you can obt out of sex ed but you cant obt out of the children talking about what they just learned this learning our children

I'm not being remotely ridiculous @Myotherusernameisbest. You've stereotyped a whole group of people based on limited interactions (unless you've met every single traveller in the world, which I doubt).

You're a racist.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/07/2018 17:36

We had a the child of a travelling family in at work for a long time. Her siblings were the most well behaved children I've ever met. Parents lovely. But neither can read or write which is going to cause them problems in the future as the child has major problems.

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 17:37

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 17:39

toddlerteaplease i agree alot of men and woman cant read or right its quite a new thing getting tutors only being about 5-10yearold before that theyd just be took out of school without education

For balance, some of the most pristine homes I have ever entered have been those of Irish Travellers.

Rainbowtrees · 10/07/2018 17:40

The mum of one of the girls my daughter did an after school club with was pregnant, she was a slim woman who still wore tight clothing so was very obvious. I asked if her children (oldest in yr 6) were excited and she said they didn’t know anything about pregnancy/sex and they would learn they were having a sibling once the baby arrived.

Other children at the school must have noticed, do children just learn not to ask their parents if they notice someone is pregnant?

Caribbeanyesplease · 10/07/2018 17:42

It’s totally baffling
Early pregnancy rife in travelling community
Yet such disdain for sex education. Why? Because you don’t like contraception?

sorry, takeAbreak, shouldn't have said "selling". I meant it seems a very limited life, especially for women.

Alanamackree · 10/07/2018 17:43

Is there a social hierarchy within your community? Do you have leaders/ chiefs ?

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 10/07/2018 17:43

The thing that worries me about not allowing your children to learn about sex education is that if the boys are allowed to date then are they having safe sex? Do they know how to prevent themselves getting STIs? Do they know that condoms break and have a failure rate? Do they know what sign to look out for if they catch something and how to get tested? If the girls know nothing about sex, how do they know what is normal once they get married? Would they know if their husband was being sexually abusive to them? Would they be able to tell someone?

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 17:45

rainbowtrees
i knew when i was about 14ish when a woman was pregant i realised after a while of course we know a woman is pregant when we get a bit older but at 10/11 would never ever mention it especially in front of a man
