Due to living in a small island I'm frequently bored. Hence the thread. Grin

How's your MIL?

Stimmyplip · 30/06/2018 16:56

Yes we do get cut off by the weather.

One Christmas we were without power or water for 7 days. It took DH 5 day to chainsaw out of our road to the main road! The island ran out of petrol and diesel and everyone started smelling!

I think maine was a 50/50 split in the election. You live in a lovely area, I have been out on the mail boat from Portland a couple of times.

Do you have a car on the mainland?

Stimmyplip · 30/06/2018 16:57

My mil has actually got worse since dh's sister has had two kids. They get no end of attention and poor ds gets very little. It's horrid.

We don't have a car on the mainland but as our ferry fees have recently risen 118% we're going to have to I think. It's too bloody expensive to drive over!

Betty MacDonald wrote a number of light memoirs back in the day, including one about when she lived on Vashon Island. Nice light read.

Stimmyplip · 30/06/2018 16:59

Oh will read! Thanks!

I can't believe Maine was 50/50!

Actually, we used to have a house in Rangeley so I can lol.

No questions OP but it sounds lovely

PanPanPanPing · 30/06/2018 17:01

Ah, so there is an established community on the island which includes shops, schools etc?

For some reason, by your OP, I thought you owned and lived on your own island by yourself! Perhaps like some of the small islands in the St Lawrence River - like one of the Thousand Islands?

So is your island more like Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney - or The Scillies, or the Isle of Man?

Do you have to 'winterize' your house? What sort of heating do you have during the Winter?

Stimmyplip · 30/06/2018 17:03

It's lovely when it's not freezing cold and covered in snow and ice! And when there's not tourists everywhere. So it's best in June and September lol!

I'd miss online shopping , but I'm so shallow ..do you ?

Kursk · 30/06/2018 17:05

I would love a camp in Rangeley! We have done a few ATV camping trips around there.

I am guessing you have no police, fire or ambulance, so are you well stocked?

SorrelForbes · 30/06/2018 17:05

DH and I will be in Maine next year as part of a driving holiday. Please can we visit you? Grin

Stimmyplip · 30/06/2018 17:06

Oh I bloody wish I was on my own!

We have two schools. One goes from 6 months to pre k. The other kindergarten through to highschool. So until 18 when they go to uni.

Although ds will only have one other kid in his year, so they combine years. With the two years combined there will still only be 6 kids in the class though!

When they're 10 (I think) they start allowing magnet students from the mainland to join the school so there's about 6 to a year. Thank God!

Ever seen a shark? Thinking Amity Island... Grin

Stimmyplip · 30/06/2018 17:07

We do most of our shopping online. We get fed ex planes once a day in the winter (when they can fly) and about 10 times in the summer lol!

I can't remember the last time I actually tried clothes on in a shop!!

What's better - Reese's pieces, or Reese's peanut butter cups?

ggirl · 30/06/2018 17:09

oh that's very civilised

Stimmyplip · 30/06/2018 17:10

We had a ski house right next to the mountain. We sold it the year before it all shut down!! At a huge loss but at least we got rid of it, the area is really suffering now.

We have one policeman. He's super cool. If he catches the kids underage drinking or smoking weed he just confiscates their car keys!

We have a volunteer fire department (the cop is the head of that too) and part time on call ems (again, the cop is on that and his wife.)

We have an island doctor who's pretty awesome but it's awkward going in with vagina problems when you see him at all of the parties. Grin

Your life sounds like something my dh and dd would love. I dont know if I would feel a little too remote.

What does your dh do? Do you have a pain in the arse islander who does everyones head in?

Kursk · 30/06/2018 17:10

We saw two sharks last year. A big thresher shark and an 8 foot shark that we think was a baby great white! That one was really close!!

Sounds lovely. Would you post a pic of your view? Understand if not but all I can ever see is rows of parked cars!
