Due to living in a small island I'm frequently bored. Hence the thread. Grin

We visited Peaks on a Saturday recently and it was crazily busy getting on and off the ferry to the point where cars had to wait another hour for the next one. It got me wondering what you do if say you've got a flight to catch, but the ferry is full and you can't get off the island. I guess you just have to get to the ferry really early and hope it doesn't break down?

MissConductUS · 28/07/2018 18:34

We're having steamed lobster tonight! DH found it on sale at the supermarket (yes, he does the shopping) Smile for $7.99 per pound, which is a very good price in NY.

We'll have them with drawn butter and lemon, french fries, onion rings and cole slaw.

DH does most of the cooking too. Grin

Stimmyplip · 28/07/2018 20:49

If you have a flight to catch you go the day before.

In the summer we can wait in line for three hours to get a ferry. And that's a day with no problems!

Dh is doing a lobster bake for I think 60 tonight!

We have 5 of our own traps so I'm over it. I much prefer crab. I could eat crab every day. Hmm, actually I think I do!

I love this thread!

Does your island need painter and decorators op?

We have a little island off the coast of us we went and visited and the man said they were struggling for decorators wondered if it's an issue there too so we can move 😂

MissConductUS · 28/07/2018 22:32

Stim I should have known better than to brag about a lobster dinner around you. Smile

It was meant as a statement of culinary solidarity.

Stimmyplip · 29/07/2018 00:35

@ShesABelter we do!!!

@MissConductUS they made it a law that they couldn't serve lobster too often in jail as they would serve it every day. Grin

@MissConductUS when I lived in London I'd pay £25 for a lobster roll. And it was the best thing in the world.

I need to not eat it for a year and regain my love.

Although, lobster mac and cheese with blue cheese will never cease to be amazing.

@MissConductUS I'm ashamed to admit I make Dh sort my lobsters not. The tomalley makes me EnvyEnvyEnvy.

@Stimmyplip - I love Jim Belushi. He's not the natural comedian his brother was but he's supposed to be a lovely man.

I had a lobster roll almost everyday we were in Massachusetts. The picture is the one I had at Turner's in Salem. It was fab, and they're famous for those thin cut onion rings. I've had lobster mac and cheese, but always with cheddar, the blue cheese version sounds divine!

Don't feel ashamed that DH does your lobsters. I do very little of the cooking in the house and we eat very well!

This LR was on the specials at Pizza Uno (the Chicago deep pizza place) on Kenmore square in Boston. We had popped in for a late lunch after touring Boston University, which was amazing. It's was quite good, but not up to Turner's standards.

I have a new question! My in laws are coming to visit us in Boston in September, which is nice. MIL isn’t able to walk long distances so I’m looking for suitable outings. We live virtually in North Station so I was wondering if we could get the train somewhere. (See previous posts on my reluctance to drive!) The Downeaster train goes up into Maine, does anyone know if either Exeter New Hampshire or Dover or Durham would be a nice day out? I really want to go to Portland but I think that’s too long on the train (why are the trains so slow?)

Stupomax · 09/08/2018 19:01

Ohh the Downeaster is so annoying. Why doesn't it stop in Portsmouth? Why Dover? Who wants to go to Dover?

IMO... if you went to Dover then maybe did an Uber into Portsmouth you could have a lovely day. Portsmouth has loads of history and a walkable centre, and you could get to Kittery for the outlets.

Or you could do the Downeaster to Portland, have a look round, then Uber to Freeport and do some shopping. How about a night at the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport? The Downeaster goes to Freeport too...

The Concord Coach from South Station is a great option - 2 hours, pretty comfortable. You could Uber to South Station. We do that quite often. As long as you're not trying to go north on a Friday or Sunday evening you should be fine.

Lucky. We used to live in Maine. Lived in Kennebunkport and had a ski condo in Bethel. It is true, Maine really is the way life should be..My children read “Blueberries for Sal” nine million times. I hope to return someday ...

Stimmyplip · 10/08/2018 13:02

@MissConductUS Oooo those look delish!

The lobsters have finally appeared in droves so the price has dropped to $2.20 a pound boat price!!!!

@Stupomax @chemenger

The downeaster is a pain! I'd take Concord coach over that. Although with their recent disgusting behaviour towards non citizens I'm personally boycotting them.

Freeport is nice. I like the Harraseeket but they are pricey this time of year, the Hilton is cheaper but not as nice.

I love Portland. So many amazing places to eat!

Not really spent much time in Portsmouth or Dover so can't comment.

@SecretWitch

I love Kennebunkport, we had our 'baby moon' there.

I've never skied Bethel. We used to have a ski house in Rangeley but luckily sold it the year before Saddleback closed.

What a great thread. I am going to Maine in October as part of a New England holiday and I am now thinking about spending the whole 10 days there and forgetting about Boston and Cape Cod.

Originally I was planning on going to Bar Harbor but thought it may be just too far. Love the look of Kennebunkport but worried that might not be far enough North.

Can I ask what will the weather be like in Mid October?

Onceuponatime21 · 22/08/2018 10:33

Just to add to the chorus of people who love Maine, and Portland. I did summer camp there, so appreciate the majority of friends I made weren't from Maine, but some were, and many others have settled there since camp. Also appreciate camp is a total bubble and doesn't represent real life. But still made me love Maine with a passion.

Stimmyplip · 22/08/2018 12:32

@Belindabelle

Mid October is like the UK. Could be quite warm, could be quite cold! Bar Harbour is amazing, Acadia is stunning but it is far. It's way too touristy in the summer for me, it shuts down a lot at some point, probably not by then but I'd check.

The third week of October can actually be busy on the coast as it's prime leaf peeping season. But it's worth it for that. It's stunning.

I'd go up to Camden personally but I'm biased! Grin

Stupomax · 22/08/2018 13:40

We always go up to Acadia (Bar Harbor) right around Columbus Day weekend and it's absolutely beautiful - this year that's Oct 8th. The Mount Desert Island Marathon is on Oct 14th this year, so Bar Harbor will still have most things open that weekend. I'd say a lot will close after that.

The leaves will be spectacular, and the weather - as long as it doesn't rain - will be perfect for hiking. Few crowds and no mosquitoes. Although having said that, you'll still see lots of people at places like Thunder Hole and at the top of Cadillac Mountain at sunrise, and there may still be a wait at Jordan Pond if you want to get popovers (which you should).

IMO it's the perfect time to go to Acadia and the rest of Maine. Lots of cruse ships visit Maine right around that time. You can do lots of scenic drives around seeing the beautiful foliage. There won't be any state parks open for camping but there should be lots of other cheap accommodation available.

Stimmyplip · 22/08/2018 14:15

I honestly don't know why people visit June- August, it's slammed and the hotel prices are INSANE.

September and October in Maine are why I live here!
