How I tested

I used the Blyss 16L dehumidifier in my 1920s three-bedroom home over the course of a wet February, focusing on two common jobs. First, drying a full load of laundry indoors with the help of a pedestal fan. Second, tackling condensation build-up on the windows in my medium-sized sitting room.

This is a practical, budget-conscious dehumidifier that gets the basics right. It’s easy to live with day to day, and the castors and handle make it easy to move between rooms. It's pretty compact, so it’s not a pain to store. The controls are clear and you don’t need to keep fiddling with it once it’s set.

Laundry drying is where it does a solid job, and it's the job most Mumsnet users invest in a dehumidifier for. It will get clothes dry within a reasonable timeframe, especially if you help it along with a fan, but it’s not the fastest option out there. For the price, though, it's impressively powerful and great value.

Noise and the slightly fiddly water tank are the main drawbacks. Neither is a dealbreaker, but both are noticeable enough to factor into your decision.

Set-up is straightforward, but check the water tank before you start. The castors are stored inside it, which caught me out at first. Once those are fitted, it’s easy enough to wheel around, and the handle makes lifting manageable despite the weight.

The controls are simple and practical. You get two fan speeds, a timer from 1 to 24 hours, and a clear tank full light. The 2.5L tank isn’t huge, so it does need emptying regularly during heavier use. The lack of a lid makes that slightly more awkward than it should be, especially if you’re carrying it downstairs.

For tackling condensation and general damp, it’s dependable and easy to use. Set your target humidity and let it run, and it gets on with improving the room.

If you want something affordable with proper laundry functionality and don’t mind a bit of background noise, this is a sensible buy. If speed and low noise matter more, it’s worth looking higher up the price ladder.

Is the Blyss 16l dehumidifier good for drying laundry?

Mumsnet Home editor Poppy O'Neill hand testing the Blyss 16L Dehumidifier WDH-316DB

For laundry, there’s a dedicated mode, which you don’t always get at this price. It automatically ramps the fan up and activates the swing function so the air circulates across your washing rather than blasting one spot.

Drying performance is good rather than brilliant. With a full load and a fan running alongside it, my washing was dry within an afternoon. It didn’t match the speed of a Meaco DD8L Pro in the same conditions, but it wasn’t miles off either. If you’re used to faster desiccant models, you’ll notice the difference. If you're upgrading from drying laundry indoors without a dehumidifier, you'll notice a big improvement - both to the time your laundry takes to dry and a reduction in the damp and condensation in your home.

Noise is the trade-off here. On laundry mode, it’s quite noticeable, especially in a smaller space. I wouldn’t want it running in a bedroom overnight, but in a spare room or behind a closed door it’s manageable.

Does the Blyss 16l dehumidifier offer good value for money?

At around £120, this sits firmly in the more affordable end of the market. You’re getting features that are sometimes reserved for pricier models, like a dedicated laundry mode and swing function, which helps it punch above its price point.

Compared with something like the Meaco Arete One 12L, which is typically around £180, you get comparable results but the Blyss model is noisier. If you're looking to dry laundry quickly and effectively indoors, without creating damp, this is a great budget option.
