How we tested the Momcozy M9

Mum-of-two and verified Mumsnet parent-tester Alex used the Momcozy M9 Breast Pump regularly over a period of three months to pump milk for her baby (aged between seven and 10 months at the time of testing). During this time she thoroughly assessed the M9 for a number of important factors including ease of use, comfort, durability, discretion and overall value for money. Having used the Elvie and Medela Freestyle wearable pumps before, Alex was also able to directly compare the performance of Momcozy's M9 with its biggest competitors.

What's in the box?

Alex received the double pump version of the Momcozy M9, which included:

  • Two pumps with two flange covers

  • Two diaphragms

  • Four milk collectors, 150ml

  • Two charging cables

  • Four storage lids

  • Four check balves

  • Six different sized flange inserts: 2 x 17 mm, 2 x 19 mm, 2 x 21 mm

  • User manual and quick start guide

  • Flange size ruler

  • Storage box

Does the Momcozy M9 require assembly?

"The Momcozy M9 was perfectly presented in the box it arrived in with the pump already assemble and all the parts wrapped securely in separate containers."

The pump comes with a useful carry case where all the pieces have a place to go. It makes the pump extremely transportable as the case is compact and neat, I'd just pop in in my changing bag and go.

Is the pump easy to set up and use first time?

"It is a little bit fiddly," explained Alex. "It comes assembled so it's a case of examining it before taking it apart. The silicone diaphragm inside the pump is attached in a specific way which was a little bit fiddly to start with."

The pump came with good instructions via a quick start guide and it has an app too which it prompts you to download. This helps run through the set up. As you need the app to get the best out of the pump I think it's easiest to just use this to learn how to use it.

How do you use the Momcozy M9 Pump?

The pump is wearable so it's just a case of putting in your bra and ensuing it's connected via Bluetooth to your phone, the app has set programmes which you can use to stimulate, express, relief or boost milk supply. You can just put on and press play but I struggle to see how you would know it was doing the right thing.

How comfortable is the Momcozy M9?

"The pump is useful and once you have the flange size right is seems to be quite efficient. It did take a bit of getting used to and possibly wasn't as powerful as pumps I've used previously, so it took a bit of working out which settings to use to get the best out of it."

I can sit comfortably when wearing the pump. I wouldn't bend over with it on, but haven't had any incidents of spilling milk.

How noisy is the Momcozy M9?

At less than 46db, the Momcozy M9 is around the mid level of noisiness for a wearable breast pump. For comparison, the Medela Freestyle is 56.8db while the ultra-quiet Elvie Pump is around 30db. Having tried both these pumps, Alex agreed that the Momcozy was "a little noisy competed to the Elvie but pretty good in terms of noise and certainly a lot quieter than the Medela."

How efficient is the Momcozy M9?

While I don't think it's as efficient as I'm used to, once you find the right setting then it's fine. I found the milk relief program which is 15 mins long quite good - it's a mixture of stimulation and expression.

How does the pump compare to others you've used?

"While the Momcozy M9 is a lot quieter than the Medela Freestyle Flex, I didn't find it as powerful as this or the Elvie I've used. I think the other pumps were simpler to put together too."

I don't think I got as much output from this pump as I did from my previous pumps but this could have been for other reasons not just the pump. Sometimes it worked amazingly - the human body is both amazing and annoying!

How sturdy is the Momcozy M9?

"It's pretty sturdy. I haven't dropped it but I imagine it's quite robust. The hold is strong when you put it together and doesn't feel like it would break apart easily."

I'd be happy taking it out and about using the carry case. I wouldn't be worried about breaking it.

How easy is it to clean?

"The pump says it is steriliser and dishwasher safe, but having ruined an Elvie pump by sterilising it in the past, I tend to hand wash it in warm soapy water and let it air dry. It is very easy to take apart and wash. If I were to sterilise it I would probably do cold water sterilisation."

How discreet is the Momcozy M9 to use?

I would be happy to use this pump in the car or sitting in a pub/cafe but probably not while walking around out of the house. I would consider using it at work. I used my Elvie at my desk at work but this pump is a bit louder.

What is your favourite thing about the Momcozy M9?

My favourite thing about the Momcozy M9 pump is how robust it is as well as its appearance. It really is a beautiful pump - I'm not a pink person but I've grown to love it.

Is there anything you'd change or improve upon?

"The app is essential for the use of this pump but the recording is pretty poor. I wasn't able to use the app to record volumes of pump sessions so gave up and used the Huckleberry app as I had been previously. It's a shame as this has great potential.

It also loses its pairing quite frequently which resets the levels back to 0."

Do you think the pump represents good value for money?

I think it's quite good value for money for what you get with it. And it really does look beautiful.
