Overall verdict

After eight months of regular use, the Medela Motion Inbra Double Electric Breast Pump is one of the most extensively tested wearable pumps in our list of reviewed breast pumps. Our mum-of-two tester Amber used it an average of once a day alongside breastfeeding her baby, who was aged between one and nine months during testing. One of the major selling points which stood out right away was how easily the pump slotted into daily life for Amber, who was able to use it completely hands-free thanks to its 'in-bra' design - a design feature which does exactly what it promises. As a mum to an older child as well as a baby, this was a feature she really appreciated during day to day life.

In practice, the Medela Motion InBra is straight-forward to use, with intuitive controls and a clear stimulation pump phase, which can either switch automatically or be manually adjusted according to milk flow. Amber found set up simple from the get go thanks to the quick start guide and a more detailed instruction booklet included with the pump. Comfort was a factor that she found largely dependent on getting the right fit - "As long as you get the correct breast shield size, the pump is comfortable to use," she said.

The Medela Motion InBra isn't perfect, however. Battery life is one of the main niggles Amber found with the pump, pointing out, "When the pumps are left unused, they lose charge quickly so you have to plan to use them." The price of the pump also means that it might be better suited to someone expressing milk on a more regular basis. That said, Amber scored the Medela very highly across the board and said, "I can't really see how the pump could be improved upon."

Bottom line: A genuinely hands-free, easy pump that makes life easier, particularly for mums with more than one child. Comfortable, discreet and quiet but you will need to keep an eye on the battery levels.

Is the pump easy to set up for first use?

Amber said that the pump was relatively easy to use straight away. "There is a quick start guide and then an in-depth instruction book. It is quite intuitive." The combination of simple instructions and logical design makes the initial setup feel manageable, even if you are new to pumping.

The instructions are very easy to follow.

How do you use the pump?

Use of the pump is simple. "The pump is wireless," Amber explained, "Once turned on they can be put in position under your bra. There is a light which comes on to help guide you if you're in a dark room. You select whether it is on the left or right side, then you just press the 'play' symbol."

Is the Medela Motion InBra pump comfortable?

Amber said she found the pump comfortable to use once she had the right breast shield size. She added that while it didn't take much getting used to, she didn't test it out in the early days of breastfeeding when it might have been more sensitive.

How hands-free is the pump?

As a truly wearable pump, it's ability to be used hands-free is one of the Medela InBra's biggest selling points, particularly compared with traditional pumps that require you to stay still or hold bottles in place. And, as an extra bonus, the Medela has a warning feature to prevent leaks

It vibrates if it thinks you are tipping it too far forward and at risk of leaks.

How discreet is the Medela Motion InBra?

Again, this is an area where the Medela InBra really shines. At under 45dB, it's pretty quiet to use and thanks to its slimline design, it's fairly subtle as well. Amber noted that while she personally would prefer to use it in private, she thought it could easily be used at a desk or while out and about depending on the wearer's preference.

It isn't very noisy, I think it's about as discreet as a breast pump could be.

-Parent-tester Amber

How powerful is the pump?

With a suction range going up to 300 mmHg, the Medela InBra is just as powerful as the likes of hospital-grade pumps including the Elvie Stride 2, the Spectra S1 and the Eufy S1 Pro. The Medela InBra features nine different levels of suction intensity.

There are different power settings so you can adjust this to suit your levels of comfort.

Are there different shield sizes available?

“Yes, it comes with one additional shield size.” Amber added that smaller and larger options are available separately, which is important for achieving a comfortable and effective fit.

Is the pump heavy or awkward to use?

The design of the InBra means that it is supposed to sit literally in the bra. Amber noted that the pump did not feel heavy or awkward to use at all, "they're actually quite compact."

How durable is the Medela Motion InBra?

Amber said that the pump felt "pretty sturdy once all parts are together." However, she did flag that “some parts are thin plastic so could be broken if not handled correctly,” so a bit of care is needed when assembling and cleaning.

Is it easy to clean?

In a word, yes. "It comes apart into various different bits. The electronic part is completely separate so can be put to one side and the rest of the bits can be fully submerged in water." All non-electric parts can be put into a dishwasher and/or steriliser and Amber added that she hadn't noted any fading after repeated washes.

Is there anything you would change about the Medela Motion InBra?

The only pain point Amber had with the InBra was the battery life after periods of disuse. "When the pump units are left unused they lose charge quickly, so you have to plan when to use them."

Does the Medela Motion InBra represent good value for money?

With an RRP of £200, the Medela InBra is fairly middle-range when it comes to upmarket double wearable breast pumps. It's a little more expensive than the likes of the £150 Lansinoh Discreet Duo but cheaper than the Elvie Stride 2 (£299) and MAM Move (£250). Amber said she thought the pump was worth the investment for someone planning to pump regularly.

Overall verdict

Overall, Amber rated the Medela Motion InBra very highly, saying it was discreet, comfortable and easy to use. Her favourite features were its compact, wireless design and the ease of cleaning.

Overall, I would rate it 10/10. I can't see how it could be improved upon.
