Elvie Stride 2 Breast Pump review: is Elvie's upgraded wearable pump worth the hype?

An upgrade to the popular Elvie Stride wearable breast pump, which Mumsnet users have raved about since its launch in 2022, the Elvie Stride 2 claims to feature all the best elements of its original design and more. We put it to the test with breastfeeding mum-of-two Catherine, who tried it out over several months and reviewed it in direct comparison to four other popular breast pumps.

How we tested the Elvie Stride 2 Breast Pump

Mum-of-two Catherine used the Elvie Stride 2 daily over a testing period of 6+ weeks. During this time she took careful notes on how easy the Stride 2 is to use day to day, how efficient its output and how it compared to four other breast pumps she has used. She put the Elvie Stride 2 through multiple washes and sterilisations, tested out its durability and provided an overall verdict on how well it fitted into her day to day life with a small baby and school-aged child.

What is the difference between the Elvie Stride and Elvie Stride 2?

According to Elvie: "Elvie Stride 2 is an evolution of our hands-free pump, Elvie Stride. It offers the same hospital-grade performance and app connected control that you love, now with a better fit, better feel, and better flow. This includes redesigned soft silicone cups for increased comfort and comes with six sizing options in the box, ensuring a fit for 99% of nipples."

Does the Elvie Stride 2 require assembly?

"Yes it requires some assembly, washing and sterilising before first use," explained Cathering. "The instructions for assembly are straightforward, easy to follow and there are photos to guide you too."

How easy is the Elvie Stride 2 to set up and use first time?

"It is very easy," said Catherine, "You do need to wash and sterilise the washable components before hand, but this is very clearly shown in the instructions. It is easy to put back together and start using the instructions. There are some safety guidelines which you need to read before using - the print for these is very small so some might find tricky to read."

How is the pump to use day to day?

After assembling the pump, you align the breast shields with your nipples (images provided to show how to do this correctly), place the cups in your bra and press the play / pause button on the hub. Stimulation mode starts, then it automatically switches to expression mode after approx 2 minutes. You can change the intensity of both the stimulation and the expression modes using +/- buttons on the hub.

There are also lights that indicate what intensity setting the pump is set to, plus a different light next to a droplet picture which shows it is in expression mode. I like both these features.

How noisy is the Elvie Stride 2?

"It is very quiet, I wouldn't notice the noise in an office setting or out and about. It is discreet in this context, but I don't know if I would feel comfortable using it in an office environment as I think the cups would be noticed.

I would use it if going for a walk and wearing a coat / large jumper over it.

How comfortable is the Elvie Stride 2?

I found the pump very comfortable. This is the fifth type of breast pump I've tried and I would say it's the most comfortable. It's take a little while to get the intensity right and make sure the shields are aligned properly but I managed this within the first time using it.

How efficient is the Elvie Stride 2?

"I have another hospital grade pump and I pump nearly the same amount of milk in the same time, so I would say it is efficient, particularly for a wearable pump."

Are different sized nipple shields/inserts available?

"Yes there are five different size options of nipple inserts."

Is the Elvie Stride 2 heavy or awkward to use?

Not very heavy. The tubing can be a bit awkward to position but once you've found how it works for you, everything stays in place.

How does the Elvie Stride 2 compare to other breast pumps?

I've tried / used four other breast pumps in the last eight months. This is the quietest of all the ones I've tried. It's the most compact too and one of the most comfortable. The amount I pump is more than the other wearable pump I have but not quite as much as the other pump I use. It is easier to put together than my other wearable pump but not as easy as my non-wearable.

Is the Elvie Stride 2 good value for money?

"I think the fact that it is so quiet and hands-free are big positives. The double pump is expensive, but it you're looking for something relatively discreet, very quiet, that you can wear and pumps a good volume, then I think it could be worth the spend."

How sturdy is the Elvie Stride 2?

It feels very sturdy - all parts are well made and high quality. The valves can feel a little flimsy when fitting them but I haven't had any problems as long as I've been careful putting them on.

How do you clean the Elvie Stride 2?

"I hand wash it using a small brush that is designed for washing bottles. I use this to make sure the valves are properly clean. It could go in the bottle washer we have but we run out of room with the number of bottles we use. I use our cold water steriliser for it, and the washable parts can go in the dishwasher as well."

Would you be happy to use the Elvie Stride 2 at work?

Elvie stride 2 review image models

I think it depends on your work. I currently run baby and toddler classes so wouldn't wear it for these as I'm too active. I would use it in a staff room as long as I had somewhere more private to put it on / set it up for a pumping session. I'm not sure about using it at a desk - it would depend if I found a top I felt comfortable wearing so it wasn't too obvious.

I'd be happy to use it whilst walking if I wore a coat/ large jumper over the top to hide it slightly.

What would you change about the Elvie Stride 2?

"I had some bra extension clips included with the wearable pump I own. I would include these with the pump to find it easier to find a bra you can wear with the pump. I would also like to have seen bras suggested that would help to keep the cups in optimal position for pumping."

Overall verdict:

"There's a lot to like about the Elvie Stride 2. I love how quiet and comfortable it is, and how efficient for a wearable pump. It's very discreet in terms of noise output, but less so in terms of bulk under a top. It's also pretty expensive."
