Is the dog invited?

1000 replies

DoggyAuntie · 06/08/2026 21:02

My husband's brother and his wife are coming to stay with us this weekend, on their way back home from their holiday further north. All good. They live in a big house with a garden whereas we live in a smaller house with a back yard but we can cope for a couple of days.

This afternoon, I looked at my sister-in-law's Instagram. She has posted photos of herself and her husband on holiday - with her dog!

I have not invited the dog. The dog had not been mentioned. I do not want the dog in my house.

My husband has said it's just one of those things. I feel they are being insufferably rude to expect me to welcome the dog into my home without even asking.

Am I being unreasonable?

Urgh, I don’t generally accept dogs in my house - there are many reasons I don’t have a dog and one of them is I don’t want it in my house 😂
but it seems like you either call your brother and explain you weren’t expecting the dog and don’t want it in the house therefore they are uninvited OR you accept the dog in your house for their visit.
I love my brother and would accept his dog in this situation (he doesn’t have a dog so this is theoretical 😂 I have had dogs here before though for similar reasons).

IfYoureHappyAndYouKnowlt · 06/08/2026 21:05

Is there any hope they are kennelling it whilst visiting you? It is indeed monumentally insufferably rude to bring a dig without there being a clear invitation.

Husband needs to confirm with his Bro that the dog is not welcome in your home.

SemmaLina · 06/08/2026 21:07

The dog has not been invited and would not be allowed in my house

IglesiasPiggl · 06/08/2026 21:07

It sounds like it just didn't occur to them to check - some dog owners totally forget that not everyone likes dogs in their home. Your DH should equally have thought of it earlier as well. It's too late to do much now though, unless you uninvite them, as they already have the dog with them. Is it badly behaved, or do you just prefer not to have any dogs in your house (I don't really like dogs in my house so would totally understand that if so).

Namenamchange · 06/08/2026 21:08

Who arranged the visit ?

SatansScrotum · 06/08/2026 21:08

I wouldn't have the dog but I'd have made at clear at the time that the dog wasnf invited, not a few days before.

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 06/08/2026 21:09

I would never just assume it is ok to bring my dog to anyone’s house and actually would never ask to be honest. That’s very rude.

I think you need to message your brother and let him know that he hadn’t mentioned the dog when making arrangements and that you’re not really up for house the hound!

Should I have made it clear at the time that my mother in law and the England Women's Rugby team weren't invited too?

Well sadly for them they will have to go straight home because the dog is not invited. Up to you whether you tell them that now or when they've just parked outside your house though.

AnneLovesGilbert · 06/08/2026 21:12

It’s not just one of those things, he’s being ridiculous. He needs to message his brother and be clear the dog isn’t welcome or staying. I wouldn’t have a dog in my house under any circumstances.

XenoBitch · 06/08/2026 21:12

What do you want them to do?
Their dog was obviously part of their holiday so is with them. They are visiting you on their way back home.

I have met the dog in their house. It was happy enough running around their large house and garden. I don't know how it would behave in my house.

I'm definitely a dog person, but I'm a 'dogs I know and love' person. I'd expect someone to specifically ask if they could bring their dog inside my home, just as I wouldn't show up with my dog without asking beforehand. But that said, I'd probably find a way to make it work this time, assuming it's trained not to toilet in the house and is reasonably well behaved. Maybe limit where the dog can go in the house by shutting off certain rooms or blocking the stairs?

Well yes they should have checked but...

Isnt it obvious the dog will be going on the holiday? If they aren't going abroad of course the dog will be coming! Dogs are family members too...

No, but none of those live with your brother in law. You knew that they have a dog. It should have occured to you to check about the dog if you're not going to allow it in the house.

Pistachiocake · 06/08/2026 21:14

We had someone turn up with their kid to a party-they didn't ask, and the child wrecked stuff and ruined the party, as no one could relax (I'd never have been able to forgive myself if he'd got burnt at the BBQ).
If she'd said she couldn't get a sitter, and asked, that's reasonable (FYI she had parents who always sat for her, as she always was clubbing). But people should ask before bringing anyone but the ones invited.
I know some people will say that you'd expect a couple to bring family (whether kids or dogs) if staying over as it's different from a party, but I think you should ask. Hopefully the dog won't make as much mess of your house as the kid made of hours. I bet he'll be quieter at least!
They should have checked-if they can't come as they don't have whatever sitter dogs get, that's fine, but you're not unreasonable to think they should ask.

But it wasn’t obvious. The dog was never mentioned. If you made plans to stay with someone you’d make sure you bloody well mention you’ll have a dog with you!

No, it should have occurred to them that their dog was not invited.

Well, you don't know what the situation is yet

But basically, your husband needs to be clear that the dog isn't coming. And wasn't invited.

Your comment about the rugby team really made me laugh!

but yeah, they should not assume that an invitation to them includes their dog. Sadly, many people will assume that now in 2026.

Dogs are not family members, any more than houseplants and teddy bears are family members. They are pets.

As it sounds like you’re a stop off vs the point of the trip, Id chalk this up to an oversight and check if the dog is ok staying in your kitchen or whatever you’re comfortable with. Maybe for one night instead of a weekend?
If that doesn’t suit you, then someone is on the hook for alternative accommodation for them, or ask them to change their plans - getting lunch with you, maybe having a sleep if it’s a v long onward drive and then heading off..
