Is the dog invited?

1000 replies

DoggyAuntie · 06/08/2026 21:02

My husband's brother and his wife are coming to stay with us this weekend, on their way back home from their holiday further north. All good. They live in a big house with a garden whereas we live in a smaller house with a back yard but we can cope for a couple of days.

This afternoon, I looked at my sister-in-law's Instagram. She has posted photos of herself and her husband on holiday - with her dog!

I have not invited the dog. The dog had not been mentioned. I do not want the dog in my house.

My husband has said it's just one of those things. I feel they are being insufferably rude to expect me to welcome the dog into my home without even asking.

Am I being unreasonable?

Yes he does. He deserves time with us. New smells. New sights. New experiences. Swimming in the sea. It’s memories for him.

Lol

I have no doubt you are surrounded by people similar to you. What’s your point? Why the need to bring up children as a comparator to defend antisocial dog behaviour?

Dogs are not naturally bad behaved. It’s bad owners not bothering to train them and set boundaries. Same with children

Mermaidmusing · Today 08:46

It is funny that bad dog owners always bring up children when trying to defend dog behaviour. They have no other standalone argument!

Every time. We had a very entitled (aren’t they all?) dog owner who moved into the apartment block I lived in with a dog, despite a longstanding no pets policy. When challenged, their arrogant response was that dogs were less annoying than children and why hadn’t we banned children from the block?! Bat-shit.

For him to tell the grandkids when he is old 🤣🤣🤣

Ha! Making memories.

ovals · Today 08:46

Why are people so pressed about others treating their dogs well? Imagine trying to ridicule someone for caring about an animal they’ve took on responsibility for.

Of course it’s the bad entitled owners. Who let their dogs wander up to people, ruin picnics, poor everywhere and jump up at strangers.

I’m not ‘pressed’ about anything anyone does with their dogs. They can do what they want. I also treat my dog well.
I am ‘pressed’ about people not having very basic manners and assuming they can take their dogs to someone else’s house without checking it’s ok first.

If you’re not ‘pressed’ why did you assume I was talking about you?

And i am pressed about how the crazy levels of anthropomorphism affect other people. Tbh if you want to think your dog is a child and has a concept of Christmas then that’s your look out. But what is new is you are now expecting me to adopt the same mindset and are then offended when I point out that it is actually just a dog after all. Dogs cause so many of these sorts of family arguments because people can’t just accept that it’s a pet for some reason.

Of course they are naturally badly behaved! That’s why you have to train them to be able to not jump on people, eat furniture, shit in the house etc etc

I didn’t assume you were talking about me. As far as I was concerned it was a general comment aimed at the entire (public) thread, and I responded to it.
People can take their dogs on the plane to Disneyland to make all the memories in the world for all I care. Photos with Mickey Mouse and a Cinderella make over if they fancy. However this thread is about them taking their dog to someone else’s house, without checking it’s ok. By anyone’s standards (anyone who has manners, anyway) that is rude.

Pretty much the same with children then

Why are you on a parenting forum if you have such disdain for children?

lol. It’s more for the time when he leaves us. I want him to feel he was loved and we gave him the best life we could

I think mum‘s net is evolved far more than being just about having children.

Dogs are not family members, any more than houseplants and teddy bears are family members. They are pets.

You sound like a great person. Not.

YoQuieroVino · Today 09:02

Maybe someone could create a ‘Dogsnet’ 😁

I agree, OP should get a dog.

Her house will stink then! Yeah people give their dogs a bath, but dried dog drool on a sofa or carpet smells disgusting 🤢 And will it be sleeping on the bed? They’ll bring its blanket but that will be full of drool and hairs too. You can smell a dog seconds after walking into a house, no amount of diffusers or air fresher can disguise it

YoQuieroVino · Today 09:03

Daisymay1000 · Today 09:01

While I wouldn’t compare my dog to a houseplant or teddy bear (she’s smellier and more trouble!) I also don’t think she’s a ‘family member’. She’s a pet. An animal. We’re humans.

Skates · Today 09:03

YoQuieroVino · Today 08:38

And that’s fine! You are more than welcome to do that.
But this thread isn’t about you and your dog. It’s about the OP’s situation. She didn’t know they were bringing their dog. It is not her responsibility to check if they’re bringing their dog. It is their responsibility to check that it’s ok to bring their dog. How can anyone argue against that?

If their dog is well behaved doesn’t shit everywhere kill the neighbours cat or rip the house to pieces then I just don’t see what the problem is

The problem is that they didn’t ask the OP if she was ok with them bringing their dog.

Tedious comparison of dogs to children ✅

Because there are lots of situations that are wholly inappropriate for dogs and it’s not normal to feel like you need an animal at your side to be able to go about your daily activities - do you need support with your mental health? This sort of behaviour creates dogs that “can’t” be left.

Oh and the obvious reason - people don’t want it there a lot of the time!

Edited

Nowadays, I think we all need help with our mental health. But after I’ve had a shit day at work and I come home and my dog is there laying on my lap, it relaxes me. So yes, I guess he does help with my mental health.

Mercurysinretrograde · Today 09:08

I am the proud parent of a puppy nicknamed Seargent Sniffbum, who is a social pariah. I would not dream of foisting him on unsuspecting hosts. He will eat everything from their dining room chairs to carpets, logs by the fire, you name it. People tend to assume that because they love their dogs everyone else does too. Nowadays when a visitor pitches up with a dog I make them sleep in the barn, which is definitely a step down from my spare room. You have my sympathy OP, for what it’s worth.

Yes pets are lovely, ours is. We don't take her when visiting people though and neither should you. Unless they've specifically asked to please bring your dog.
