We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a sad shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

My Bella Coco crochet flowers look like wonky undernourished cabbages. Froggit all and try again xD

PicardsCombOver · 06/02/2017 00:21

Flutter granny balls?!? Pahahaha. Grin

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 06/02/2017 02:17

Took me a while to sew it in a way that made it look okay as well, Picard. Hopefully it'll work soon!

Vittys that is amazing! Sooo pretty and I can't believe you managed it in a day! Wow.

I'm currently up with DS2 pesky teeth but apart fr

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 06/02/2017 02:20

Whoops!

Was going to say apart from that have had a pretty lovely day doing my half-treble stripy square. DD1 helped me to choose which colours to use in what order, and it's looking lovely and bright.

I did originally intend to knit when I started but now am well and truly converted to crochet! I'm loving it in a way I never imagined I would. I can't wait to try a different square next!

Araminta99 · 06/02/2017 05:01

So sad to hear about Zombie. Does anyone know what happened to her cats and who is caring for them?

TheoriginalLEM · 06/02/2017 06:22

The Zcats were rehomed just before Zombie went into the hospice . Must have broke her heart Sad but at least dhe knew they were being cared for. x

Araminta99 · 06/02/2017 07:34

TheoriginalLEM thank you for responding, they must miss her so much but I'm glad to hear they have been given a new loving home. That must have given her some comfort as well. Flowers

BigApple11 · 06/02/2017 09:28

TheWoollybacksWife there were several patterns. Let me think. The two main ones were Flowerburst by CrochetYogi (you'll have to google it I think), I don't do the whole pattern but up to about round8 then a round of half trebles (uk) to make it a 6 in square. The pattern is in US terms.

The other one I use is this nittybits.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/sunburst-granny-square-blanket-tutorial.html?m=1

And there was a rogue square in there (all in purple) that was from the 200 squares Jan Eaton book.

I tend to stick to what I know pattern-wise and just play around with what colours I have. I crochet tight so use a 4.5mm hook!

Who was asking about a KT meet up or help? I am KT4 (outs self)

DoubleR · 06/02/2017 09:35

Hi BigApple11 that was me on the Crochet for Candy thread. I'm in the next KT over from you!

TheWoollybacksWife · 06/02/2017 09:48

Thanks BigApple. They both look gorgeous but I think it's the flowerburst one that I particularly like.

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 06/02/2017 09:48

What's a KT? I'm a bit of a newbie!

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 06/02/2017 09:51

Oh God, I've just realised. It's a postcode isn't it?!

DoubleR · 06/02/2017 10:02

Grin Malcolm

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 06/02/2017 10:32

Grrrr! I've been crocheting a stripy half-treble square since yesterday. It was 6" when I started, but now it's grown to 7"! Not sure how or why, I've been checking stitches all the way through and I've still got the same as when I started (30, if that makes a difference).

What should I do? Should I try and crochet a border round it when it's finished?

Help!

Zombie and Woolly Hugs. ALL very welcome to join us, come and find out about her legacy of Candy’s Hugs.
Bearfrills · 06/02/2017 10:33

Border it wide enough to take it up to 12"?

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 06/02/2017 10:45

That's what I was thinking, Bear.

I don't actually know how to border yet, but I'll have a look on You Tube.

Oh and now I have 31 stitches Blush.

Bearfrills · 06/02/2017 10:55

Happens to me all the time Grin

BaggyCheeks · 06/02/2017 10:59

Ah so HERE you all are Grin I'm hoping to get to our lovely new refurbished wool shop later on in the week to do some new squares.

Bearfrills · 06/02/2017 11:10

There's a secondhand junk shop up the road who, for whatever reason, has bags and bags of stylecraft wool for £2 a ball. They were closed on Saturday so hoping they'll be open today when I send DH along.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 06/02/2017 11:39

Thanks Polter

MrsH. I'm not too sure about that! I could have knitted an entire Woolly Hug blanket in the time it took me to make that one bloody flower 😁 I'm going to have a go later though, I think it should be pretty quick now I've got it sorted.

Fairy. It took a bit of persistence. I'm still not sure what I was doing wrong initially, but I think probably not being careful enough to go into the centre of the flower, it all looks much the same at the beginning when your not familiar with the way stitches make up. Oh. That and I went to another link to see where exactly to put the hook when 'going into the 4th chain space' and started making a different flower (by her) without realising. It was 'interesting' 😁

Vitty. That's lovely!!

Spiral 😬 you're definitely leading me astray!!

FiveGMID I considered going to a class at the weekend, but decided not to. I find the online tutorials much better because you can do it at your own pace & there's no pressure. I hadn't ever done any crochet (bar about 15 mins when a MNer tried to teach me at a meet up years ago) , I didn't have a clue about any of the stitches etc. Let's just say if it had been an old fashioned video the tape would have been worn through yesterday!

Have a go at the flower - it's the one RedGrape did (hers was much neater!). I'll put another link after this post.

💐 Moonwalk x

Malcolm 😬😬

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 06/02/2017 11:41

FiveGMID.

Flower

Honestly, give it a go, just rewind & pause, take it slowly. If I can, you can!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 06/02/2017 11:46

Bearfrills

That's not actually a great price. My local wool shop it's £2.10 new. Online it's cheaper & there are always specials & free postage offers.

Depending on which project you want it for, DH will need to be careful what yarn it is as Stylecraft do many different types.

BaggyCheeks · 06/02/2017 11:58

Chipping £2.10 a ball seems expensive too, when I bought some a couple of weeks ago it was £1.89 a ball. Though I suppose 20p here or there isn't too big a deal.

Bearfrills · 06/02/2017 12:11

The wool is all new, she gets a massive delivery of it each week. Makes me wonder who is buying it all!
