We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a sad shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

Can I ask a couple of questions while I wait for my wool to arrive? As I've just learned to crochet I can only do two stitches, double crochet and zig zag puff stitch, I was thinking to do squares in zig zag puff, is that ok to use? Also when it comes to changing between balls of wool mid-square do you literally just tie the new wool on to the old one, with a normal knot, and a couple of inches left which you then weave in? Thanks!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 05/02/2017 17:05

😬😬😬

It's far from perfect, but it's my first ever attempt at crochet and it's finished - bar peskies....and maybe a stem?!

Chipping - Beautiful, you've inspired me to have a go Smile

DoubleR · 05/02/2017 17:28

Thanks PolterGoose Smile now I just need my yarn

Armi · 05/02/2017 18:17

I am meant to be marking exercise books. Am unsure how best to explain to Year 11 that instead of helping them to improve their analysis of 19th century non-fiction writing I have been knitting squares. Not even glamorous squares, either. Just plain squares.

VittysCardigan · 05/02/2017 19:30

Have spent all day doing this - need to add some rows to get it to 12" but I'm really chuffed with myself. I had to write some of the pattern out in order to get my head round it & change from US to U.K. terms.

I am now going to pour myself a large Gin

NorksAreMessy · 05/02/2017 19:44

vittys that is wonderful.

I too have been knitting all day, apart from the dog stomp. Log burner, endless tea, Columbo on the telly...perfect day

Armi · 05/02/2017 19:48

See, now that's a glamorous square.

VittysCardigan · 05/02/2017 19:48

Thank you Norks. I watched a bit of Columbo and hours of Gilmore Girls - such a good day Smile

SpiralArchitect · 05/02/2017 19:54

Chipping I'll get in before K&P and say welcome to the dark side Grin

Vittys That's gorgeous and vibrant and riotous and everything!

VittysCardigan · 05/02/2017 20:09

Thanks Spiral - I'm pretty sure it's from a pattern that you shared

VittysCardigan · 05/02/2017 20:11

Thank you Armi

TheoriginalLEM · 05/02/2017 20:16

not thread related really but am sure Zombie would have a good laugh at this one www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/donald-trump-voodoo-pincushion

SpiralArchitect · 05/02/2017 20:31

Vittys Of course! That's good old Marigold, isn't it? Lovely square to hook - my one is, in fact, in the photo in the OP

LEM That is hilarious! "Spray tan coloured DK..." Grin

I am here GrinGrinGrin

TheWoollybacksWife · 05/02/2017 20:45

Just marking my place. I'm working on a Chernobyl blanket currently but I'm hanging out here for chat and inspiration for Candy hug squares. I love the squares from you BigApple that were on FB. Have you got a link to the pattern?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 05/02/2017 20:46

well done chipping I am giving crochet one more go in a lesson and then going to give up

TheoriginalLEM · 05/02/2017 20:57

Have put mine away for the day., going cross eyed. I have learnt how to do the shell lace pattern from the 200 squares book, but it keeps growing!! not in a good way! I was using it as a practice run for DDs scarf but I want something more holey!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 05/02/2017 21:00

I also did ,y first days training for this years Moonwalk, raising funds for breast cancer awareness, considering I am a lardy arse heffalump, it's going to take a lot of training,

flutterworc · 05/02/2017 23:28

Two things.

1: Spin that is fully amazing. I am in awe.

2: A small visitor came to Chez Flutter the other day and opened my drawer of Candy Yarn and exclaimed: "Look Mummy! Granny balls!"

I will continue on with my nowhere nearly as impressive as Spins squares!
