article by Lucy Bannerman
"A victim of domestic abuse was removed as a judge of a radical thinking prize and “hounded” out of her role within the Liberal Democrats for saying that she did not believe that men who identified as women should have access to women’s refuges.

Natalie Bird, 38, a mother of two who fled an abusive former partner, was accused of “dangerous transphobia” by transgender activists in the party. She had said that opening up safe spaces without proper safeguards to anyone who said that they were female could put women at risk.

She opposed segregating women’s refuges by chosen gender instead of biological sex, and said that it was not fair to make female victims of domestic violence, abuse and rape share services with people with “functioning” male anatomy.

After being allegedly bullied on social media by party activists, Ms Bird was brought before a disciplinary hearing to face a complaint in the name of Zoe O’Connell, on behalf of the LGBT+ Liberal Democrats. The correspondence says that Ms Bird had “expressed troublesome views”.

The hearing found no evidence to support the complaint of transphobia, but Ms Bird lost her position as chairwoman of the Radical Association, made up of party members, following a vote of no confidence. This cost her her role as a judge of the Ashdown Prize for Radical Thought; an ironic move, Ms Bird said, given that the prize’s aim was to reward “big, bold, radical” solutions to society’s most “daunting problems . . . no one has the courage to argue for” (continues)

Hopefully many LibDem Members will stand in support of Natalie Bird.

O'Connell and Brown make a mockery of the LibDem priciples and their bullying abusive behaviour has been allowed to run unchecked within the party.

The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. We champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals, we acknowledge and respect their right to freedom of conscience and their right to develop their talents to the full. We aim to disperse power, to foster diversity and to nurture creativity. We believe that the role of the state is to enable all citizens to attain these ideals, to contribute fully to their communities and to take part in the decisions which affect their lives.

How on earth do these people differentiate between themselves and the people in history who ran purity purges from political parties?

How certain in your own moral compass do you have to be to make such accusations against Bird and follow through with this level of victimisation?

When you are hounding survivors of abuse, your moral compass is so broken you can't tell you are one of the abusers.

This shows perfectly why the 'case by case' single sex exemptions don't work.

Fat chance of the Lib Dem leadership doing anything.

See here from yesterday, which is basically the Lib Dem leadership telling women to shut up.

Sarah Brown has demonstrated a clear agenda from the beginning of her osition as Cambridge City Council when she deliberately modified the implementation of the Equality Act sex based protections.

As well as being prominant in the LibDems, Sarah Brown is a key figure in Stonewall's powerful trans-advisory group.

Zoe O'Connell's 'bullying behaviour' called out by Andrew Gilligan earlier this year:

BreakWindandFire Fri 19-Oct-18 10:00:10

Coward and a liar as well

Ms O’Connell denied all knowledge of the case and that she was the complainant. When asked if there was another Zoe O’Connell, she did not respond. grin

I am astounded by the hate I read here for two people I am proud to call friends. Zoe & Sarah are decent hard working people, representing their local area as political activists and standing up for a fair, open and tolerant society. Whilst I expect this will draw the full weight of your wrath on me, I couldn't leave a thread with my friends names in it unchallenged.

borntobequiet Fri 19-Oct-18 10:30:56

I ceased my membership many months ago. However I keep getting emails to which I reply giving my reasons for resigning and stating that I will neither vote for, fundraiser for or support the LDs in any way until they uphold women’s rights. Also take me off their mailing lists. Never a blind bit of notice. Next time I’ll quote GDPR at them.

There is nothing fair, open or tolerant about the way Natalie Bird has been treated by your friends.

R0wantrees Fri 19-Oct-18 10:39:32

Sarah Brown 's reaction to Kristina Harrisson, a transwoman.

OK. Are you going to challenge the Times article then? Did your friends harass someone who disagreed with them about women's safety issues, and then one of them lied about being the person who had made the complaint, or not?

HumphreyCobblers Fri 19-Oct-18 10:45:57

Goodness, AnnoyedAlly, have you nothing to say about how your good friends have behaved?

I would questioned a friendship with people who seemingly have no idea how decent people behave in a democratic society.

Excellent article by Lucy Bannerman.

The LibDem party seems full of poison right now. Very sad.

And this phrase...

“expressed troublesome views”

Expressing it that way seems loaded with understated threat to me. Where is the space for freedom of speech?

O'Connell and Brown make repeated threats.

Free speech is verboten.

Zoe O'Connell IPSO complaint about Times reporting of Fairplay for Women's research on transgender prisoners- not upheld.

Zoe O'Connell complaint to Parliament about David Davies, hosting of the 'We Need to Talk' meeting- not upheld.

The posts above your post containing this comment are in the main repetitions of factual reporting and querying the moral reasoning of the people involved. Why is that in your opinion hate? Is this another word with the definition destroyed?

You are showing the same dubious morality here by doing this.

BettyDuMonde Fri 19-Oct-18 11:18:16

Maybe the challenge should be to your illiberal friends, AnnoyedAlly?

See, the thing is, we can actually see how people operate with our own eyes. Even if we give the benefit of the doubt and imagine the media is misrepresenting a person, their very own Twitter posts show us the truth.

Updated idiom for contemporary times ‘direct from the horses keyboard’.

R0wantrees Fri 19-Oct-18 11:25:11

AnnoyedAlly Your friends Sarah Brown and Zoe O'Connell have reeated and spread the false assertion that 'Mumsnetters are calling for a new Section 28'
This was based on a poorly written MN intern who breached the data of women on this site.
Emma Healy 'quoted' a post with an ironic comment by someone supportive of trans rights.

You may have (like many) Lib Dems believed this.

It is important to use critical thinking and be aware of confirmation bias.

R0wantrees Fri 19-Oct-18 11:26:56

apologies, should read 'poorly written blog post'

(which was withdrawn by Emma Healey the MN intern with an apology but was saved and spread widely by the LibDem LGBT+ twitter account)

BigotedWoman Fri 19-Oct-18 11:37:23

👏🏼 Lucy Bannerman and the Times again.

Natalie Bird is an incredible woman.

Mumfun Fri 19-Oct-18 11:55:19

shocking. have emailed Lib Dem senior contacts about it!

RedToothBrush Fri 19-Oct-18 11:57:36

Fair too much power. Fair too little accountability.

Checks and balances.

Same problem as the Green Party.

Cliques. And too few people involved in certain areas of the party to counter that. They are just driven out.
