For anyone interested there is a debate about the new legislation and gender this Wednesday evening in South London

Miranda Yardley and the Julia Long are speakers. I will definitely be attending so hope to see a few of you there.

Ah I did want to go to this but I have a work thing. I might try and make the second half if I can get away in time.

Datun Tue 12-Sep-17 08:19:31

I'm going. I think I'll take DS.

BetsyM00 Tue 12-Sep-17 10:07:22

Sadly, I'm way too far away to attend - but would love to hear about it afterwards from anyone who goes.

DJBaggySmalls Tue 12-Sep-17 10:27:08

Any chance it could be live streamed?

vaginafetishist Tue 12-Sep-17 10:27:53

I will be there too!

TheWeeWitch Tue 12-Sep-17 10:34:56

I'd really love to be there but live too far away.

Would someone who is going perhaps be able to live-tweet it?

Clonakilty Tue 12-Sep-17 22:11:56

I learn it has been cancelled.

JigglyTuff Tue 12-Sep-17 22:19:28

Miranda Yardley says it's going ahead

BetsyM00 Tue 12-Sep-17 23:09:28

Goldsmiths LBGTQ+ Society were planning a protest at the venue:

After being on the receiving end of threatening calls & emails all day, New Cross Learning have cancelled the event on health and safety grounds:

TimbuktuTimbuktu Tue 12-Sep-17 23:21:05

Is it being moved to a new venue?

JynOdan Tue 12-Sep-17 23:34:43

Yes, I believe it's still going ahead. If you go to the library, they'll let you know where to go

Datun Tue 12-Sep-17 23:36:38

Can you give me a reference to that? What library?

ellaoldie Tue 12-Sep-17 23:37:11

What library? I was planning to go.

MacaroonMama Tue 12-Sep-17 23:50:12

Have just seen this. I want to go! What was New Cross Library is now called New Cross Learning; I think the library as run by Lewisham Borough was closed but is now volunteer-led. It is in the main New Cross Rd, nr Iceland. I will try and go if DH can have the children. (That makes me sound soooo feminist wink)

Datun Tue 12-Sep-17 23:51:52

So do you have to go there to find out where the talk is being held?

TimbuktuTimbuktu Wed 13-Sep-17 00:02:05

Hmm it would be helpful if someone could share over pm etc when they know. I am unlikely to be there on time.

JynOdan Wed 13-Sep-17 00:05:12

The original venue, New Cross Library. There will be someone there to direct people to the new venue.

MacaroonMama Wed 13-Sep-17 00:06:22

Hi Datun I am not sure - have just looked at the links BetsyM00 posted above - there is a lot of very nasty debate on there. A lot of trying to shut down women's voices. I may call the library tomorrow am and ask? If I do, I will PM you. But actually if the fb chat was anything to go by, I think it will be horrible and bitter with no room for debate. I also am not sure where else it could be held. Can't imagine Goldsmiths would host it now.

JynOdan Wed 13-Sep-17 00:07:15

The library pulled out the last minute (ie. tonight) because of the trans activist harassment. The organisers are working very hard to find a new venue and will post here if there's one secured.

MacaroonMama Wed 13-Sep-17 00:07:58

Aha, thank you JynOdan. I am still not sure if I will go now - I actually feel it might not be very pleasant and/or safe. Is that cowardly?

MacaroonMama Wed 13-Sep-17 00:09:11

Why can we not even talk about it???!!! It is 1984 crossed with The Handmaid's Tale. Bloody hell.

MacaroonMama Wed 13-Sep-17 00:10:36

If anyone does go, should we wear a Mumsnet badge or something? I am def too scared to go alone! Maybe a 'pussy hat'? Or just a red rose in the buttonhole...

Datun Wed 13-Sep-17 00:14:09

I've got the number off that notice and will give them a call tomorrow.

I do hope it won't be a waste of time with transactivists yelling transwomen are women, making idiots of themselves and ruining it for everyone else.

For fuck's sake it's a venue in South East London. It's not Carnegie Hall. Every single time they shut a debate down with threats of violence, they are simply shooting themselves in the foot. Counter-productive idiocy.

JynOdan Wed 13-Sep-17 00:30:20

MacaroonMama, no, it's not cowardly at all, male violence is scary.

But funnily enough, I wasn't going to go as we had theatre tickets, but now I am going and so is my mum. I will not let bullies silence me and I want to show my support.
