For anyone interested there is a debate about the new legislation and gender this Wednesday evening in South London

Miranda Yardley and the Julia Long are speakers. I will definitely be attending so hope to see a few of you there.

I was really hoping to go but it'd take me 2 hours, two trains and a bus each way...

I hope it goes ahead. It is very disturbing that you can't talk about important women's rights without threats of violence.

Don't let them crush you.

busyboysmum · 13/09/2017 07:52

There are some really aggressive unpleasant people on there. One person seemed to be seeing if he had any friends in common with the supporters of the event and then drawing their attention to the fact that their friend was supporting the event by tagging them. In the hope that it would mess up their friendship I guess but what a personal attack that must feel like.

ArcheryAnnie · 13/09/2017 08:13

I've seen some stupid shit on twitter - people saying "did you know your friend had "liked" this event", or similar. Because god forbid you breathe the same air as an evil TERF.

Am so sick of this intimidation and thought-policing.

busyboysmum · 13/09/2017 08:17

Nice.....

JigglyTuff · 13/09/2017 08:17

People have called the police because of the evil TERF bullies. One of whom is, may I remind you, transgender. As far as I know, there have never been any instances of physical violence or even threats of physical violence from TERFs towards transpeople. The same cannot be said of transwomen towards TERFs. And yet, they're apparently scared. What they're actually doing it turning the violence of their own feelings outwards and projecting it onto women. They cannot believe that women don't feel the same wish to do violence towards them that they feel towards us.

I just wish their young intersectional female supporters could see that.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 13/09/2017 08:17

Stonewall pulled out for vague reasons. Sisters Uncut & LGBT Lewisham, despite repeated invitations to attend & give their own viewpoints, preferred the bullying & intimidation route. I hope they're all proud of themselves for doing their bit to silence women.

busyboysmum · 13/09/2017 08:19

Sadly Empress I think they are proud of themselves.

Datun · 13/09/2017 08:21

Those comments are unfuckingbelievable.

In a debate about what gender means, we won't let you debate until you agree transwomen are women.

FerretsAreFeminists · 13/09/2017 08:25

Wow...just wow.

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 13/09/2017 08:25

Fuck sake. The FB comments are unbelievable. So angry.

Ok, not shutting up. Do you think another thread would help raise awareness of it? I'm sure many do not realise how far this has gone?

Lurking journos, why don't you pick up this story?

JigglyTuff · 13/09/2017 08:32

Transmediawatch - who have an agenda of raising the profile of transpeople within the media and are one of the reasons that trans issues are getting such enormous press coverage at the moment - were also invited to speak. They pulled out on the grounds that they didn't feel Dr Long and Miranda Yardley were qualified to comment on trans issues Hmm

Datun · 13/09/2017 08:34

Does anyone have any idea whether it's going ahead, yet? I will phone after 9 AM.

SpaghettiAndMeatballs · 13/09/2017 08:48

Sisters Uncut

They were against this? I had thought they'd not be taken in by all this - especially given where the violent threats are coming from. But now I look and they're for 'self-defined women' now.

Sigh.

PencilsInSpace · 13/09/2017 08:54

I'd like to go if this is still going ahead anywhere.

Datun · 13/09/2017 09:48

I've just spoken to the woman who is organising it. It is going ahead.

I'm going to check in with her later to get the definite venue. And I'll post that here. If there is trouble, it will be moved to a private venue.

She has been harassed, threatened, doxxed. She works for an independent retail outlet and transactivists are determined to get her fired. They are leaving dozens of reviews on the site. Her bosses are now seriously considering their position, as it is effecting their business.

From what I can tell, she genuinely wants a civil discussion. And has been shocked, but hardened, by the backlash.

RaininSummer · 13/09/2017 10:07

I am too far away from London but am following with interest. I hope it goes ahead but please stay safe and watch your backs. It is disgusting that discussion is threatened and shut down in this way.

Datun · 13/09/2017 10:17

RaininSummer

In my experience, this no-platforming violence is played out online. It's rarely translated to attendance at the venue.

Having said that, I'm now feeling nervous.

qumquat · 13/09/2017 10:20

My understanding was it had been completely cancelled. I am local and was going to go. I wish New Cross Learning could at least be honest about why it has been cancelled. Their statement says it was nothing to do with 'outside pressures'. (I completely understand why they felt they had to cancel for their own safety)

Datun · 13/09/2017 10:30

qumquat

I spoke to the organiser. She assures me it's going ahead. I'll post on here later when I know the details.

SymbollocksInteractionism · 13/09/2017 10:49

I wish I could go but I'm too far away. This makes me so angry!! Male violence in another guise!! 😠😠

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 13/09/2017 11:02

So the TAs threaten a venue to the extent that it doesn't feel it's safe to allow the event to go ahead, and yet TERFs are supposedly the violent ones?
Cog diss all round.

Datun · 13/09/2017 11:11

This is from the organiser's Facebook page

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 13/09/2017 11:29

Yes, this is the kind of thing on twitter

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 13/09/2017 11:45

Wow, that Morgan's a nasty piece of work, isn't he? I wonder if that's his real name.

AssignedPerfectAtBirth · 13/09/2017 11:47

FTT as far as I can tell.

Fucking depressing that this person hates women so much, when she is female
