Why only 4 graves at the end? Are we meant to think that chief witch woman somehow posessed Matilda to become the Archangel?

Oh well spotted on the four graves issue (didn't notice that). Not sure about your theory though.

I was rather disappointed in the end TBQH - it was all a bit rushed and not sure it entirely made sense.

Also why did it need to be Matilda who the Archangel (fallen one presumably - the devil?) 'inhabited'?

I assumed Matilda (Archangel) had killed all of them but that the Matilda (good) side of her was strong enough to do good (saving her half-brother) and override the bad (devil) side?

It all rather descended into a disappointingly 'hammy' house of horror type plot, I thought. Was reminded of the Dennis Wheatley novels that DSibs and I were very keen on reading as mid teens.

yes very rushed ending considering how long drawn out the build up had been!

Binge-watching it yesterday spoiled my enjoyment. I think mystery/horror/ghost stories warrant the suspense of waiting a whole week for the next episode. Somehow builds the tension which watching all episodes back-to-back destroys.

I'm confused about Hal. How come he was naked in the field eating sheep? Were the angels (?) riding him?

It could have been so good but fell just short of the mark

I agree that binge watching it probably reduced the build up of suspense. Once again I felt the final episode let down the previous ones. It was all a bit WTF at the end.... I can't say I really understood the bit about Tilly standing with black eyes in the loo, when the graves were full of the coven. Although the only 4 graves thing would then mean the antiques lady was still controlling her?!

Bloody annoying unanswered questions.

Just finished this and wtf? I didnt get the possession thing either- must be tara Fitzgerald? Last ep was rubbish after the long build up- especially when the scary woman said ‘oh just go and put the kettle on’ was all a bit daft really

I assumed the Devil possessed her in that scene where she is alone in the dried up well staring up at the moon and stars?

But not sure why there were only four bodies - and maybe Tara Fitzgerald went on the bloody, murderous rampage that Matilda was having flashbacks to?

I think a lot of this can be answered series 2, which is clearly intended to.

Matilda's fringe freaked me out more than the satanic horror, tbh.

Intrigued to think there might be a series two, although not convinced. IME the ending was one of those classic WTF 'hanging' horror conclusions - rather like scandi noir thriller Black Lake not so long ago (and a dodgy cannabis story line in that series too).

Just finished watching with ds - he immediately spotted only four graves, but not at all sure who got away. When the police arrived at the house no sign of the blood bath that was implied by the final mirror scene. End didn’t really match the build up. What was the role of the publican for instance? Hal eating the sheep made me think of werewolf films under the full moon - that was very inconclusive and unresolved. Enjoyable nonetheless - ds and I scared ourselves half to death staying up to watch the first three episodes on Saturday.

Ds has just suggested policewoman staring pointedly at mop when she arrived to find the kitchen deserted suggests someone had cleaned up after the bloodbath. Pretty fast going though to have had a clean up and buried four bodies in the woods.

Yes I commented on the bucket and mop in the kitchen suggestive of a clean-up.

We watched episodes 2-6 in the daytime so much less scary than watching in the dead of night.

We finished this last night and full of questions e.g. why four graves? Perhaps Tara Fitzgerald manipulated the return of Matilda so Tara could be reincarnated as the all-powerful Archangel through her? I'd like to think all five perpetrators received retribution at Matilda's (grubby) hands though. She seemed the avenging angel with her smile at the end. Also, if Janice was taking Carys/Matilda to safety, why the shoebox left on the bed to stoke up intrigue about her past? Unless there were other "forces" at work... Definitely spooky late night watching!

I've just watched the last one and Ive no idea what actually happened at the end Confused
Is Tara FG now in possession of Matilda's body? Was she some sort of devil/avenging angel (the kind of head one) all along?
How come they let Harlan get away after leaving him covered in blood in the field?
Did rose know what was going on all along and agree to crazy being taken away by Mary/Janice? (That but might have been explained but dd came in and started talking to me about her homework).
Surely the police will investigate and find the four graves fairly easily?

Totally agree Darthnigel - no idea what happened either. So many loose ends - I'm waiting for someone to come along and explain. Definitely a series when the conclusion couldn't match up to the build up.

My thought on the 4 graves was the Aussie heir had been spared because he wasn't trying to control the 'angel'. Possibly I just thought that because I wanted him to survive though.

I suppose with so many unanswered questions it begs another series. Still feel short changed though. But big shout out to Lydia Wilson for portraying such an interesting character and fringe!

I don't know why there were only 4 graves at the end either - Bates, Tara FG, bloke from 4 Weddings with the cheating wife and Mrs Brittas were killed while she let the Aussie go? And why on earth was Harlan wandering around naked and disembowelling sheep?

QueenOfTheAndals that is spot on!

Would like to think the Aussie guy was spared but who knows?

Love it QueenoftheAndals! Even has the dark alien eyes!
Perhaps the Aussie was an innocent pawn mixed up in it all and didn't deserve her wrath. If there's another series, maybe Matilda goes on a concert tour to Oz with Harlan - lots of sheep there...
Harlan might have been in the early stages of Sean/man in the woods
and sheep were being killed a few eps before, presumably by him to make his lamb stew.

Crying at 'Bates, The bloke from four weddings with the cheating wife and Mrs Brittas'

He will always be Bates to me and given that I found Bates to be bloody annoying, that does mar anything he appears in for me a tad...
